| John Doe If you and he should meet one day, On crowded city street; Would you kindly smile and nod, If, briefly, eyes should meet? And if you looked into his eyes; The windows to the soul; Would you see, deep down inside, All that which makes him whole? Would you care to see in him The hopes and fears you share? Would you give the chance to him To show how much he cares? Would you see his love of life? Respect for fellow man? Would you see the kindnesses He shares each time he can? Or would you cast your glance away? Indifferent, proud and cold? He may not fit the standards you So rigidly uphold. He may not dress in silks and wools. He may not own a Benz. He may not shop at Bloomingdales, Or have important friends. But look for just one moment; Beyond the ragged clothes. Ignore that hes not shaved in days, And listen to his prose. His words, he speaks with passion; His songs are filled with life. It seems that hes not realized His days are filled with strife. He wakes each morn and greets the day With awe and wonderment. Appreciates the world around; Yet shares in its lament. He never fails to offer; Though little he may own. He knows, at times, a smile will do For those who feel alone. Those precious few who look beyond; A common thread will find. For he, like we, is human, friends. A heart. A soul. A mind. LilGray |
