Dragonslayer

I cheered the tireless struggle,
As he clawed the dismal walls.
I prayed for light to reach him
As he fought glooms smothering pall.
I sang his praises at dragons slain.
Applauded his bravery.
But then I looked more closely;
Saw self-inflicted slavery.

Those walls are not a curse imposed
Upon him by the fates.
Theyre of his own construction;
Obstructions he creates.
And notice too, it is the same;
The darkness that he fights,
One sadly comes to realize,
He extinguishes each light.
And must we call him "Hero"
For vanquishing the beasts?
Its he who has created them
And fueled them with his feasts.

His life is lived all for effect;
Hes mastered every twist.
I must admit, it saddens me
To see the face hes missed.
I see a dark and lonely soul,
Who lives that way by choice.
The wounds are self-inflicted,
And in them, hell rejoice.

So long, hes played the victim
That even hes persuaded.
Hes learned to seek the cold embrace
Of the Hell that hes created.
