Tyre stretching is when a smaller
width tyre is put on a wider width rim to give it that stretched euro look.
Most people
consider stretching as quite a new trend but in fact, it all
began in Japan where they call it 'Hapari'. Drifters used
stretched tyres because less sidewall flex was generated,
allowing to break traction easier. Also, because of the
reduced sidewall flex a smoother transition from left drift
to right drift can be created.
Is it safe or
not......
If it is safe to
run stretched rubber on a drift car doing over 100 mph on a
track then it'll be fine on a modified vehicle.
Not many garages
know how to tyre stretch but Specialist Tyres (Letchworth)
is a listed stretching station for tyrestretch.com.
On this site you can view what tyres look like stretched
over various size rims.
