History
Started in 1893 as the Minneapolis, Minnesota franchise in former, minor Western League. They then moved to Baltimore, Maryland when the league became the American League. They became the Orioles in Maryland and then moved to Hilltop Park in New York and became the Highlanders. Then after that the names Highlanders and Yankees were used until they changed their name to the New York Yankees when they made the stadium. The name Yankees came as a result of newspapers trying to make a shorter name for the headlines about them. They have an interlocking NY for their logo. They won 26 World Series and lost 13 over an 80 season span having the most championships in US professional sports.
The House That Ruth Built
The Yankee Stadium is a great monument in baseball history. It was the first baseball stadium built in the history of baseball. It all started back when the Yankees bought Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox. They got so much attendance that at their old, shared with the Giants, home, Polo Grounds, that they were kicked out because they put the Giants to shame. Later on they bought ten acres across from the Harlem River to build on it the first official baseball stadium. It was built to hold 70,000 people and favored left handed batters. There is also the Monument Park which is a museum to the players that carved out the Yankee tradition.
Some Things Yankees Did First
They changed the way that the uniforms look like with pinstripes going down the uniform. The Yankees were the first to make the numbers permanent for the players. This happened in 1929 and was based on the position that they played. The other teams started to adopt this way somewhat in 1932.
