| To Make Her Happy Kara woke up to hear the pitter-pattering of rain against the window. Her alarm clock read 3AM. She stood up and walked to the glass sliding doors. The wind was blowing hurricane hard and the waves crashed down onto the shore like bombs. "And I came to Hawaii for a sunnier summer, too," Kara said sarcastically to herself. She walked slowly over to her dresser and looked at her dark reflection in the mirror that lightened whenever lightning flashed. She looked down at her dresser that was cluttered with all her junk. She felt every item on the dressed top and stopped when she reached a sterling silver framed picture. Kara lifted the photo up and angled it toward the moonlight that shone into her bedroom. The black and white picture showed a couple sitting closely and happily togetherin front of a fireplace. Kara brushed her fingers over the two people. "I miss you, Justin," she whispered. "There is no way you are going to make me watch Titanic again," Kara raved on as she paced through the living room. "No way in hell." Justin stepped in front of her and put his arms on her shoulders. "Care-bear, it's just Titanic. It's just to bring back old memories." He paused. "Like, first date memories?" he suggested. Kara smiled, pulled away from his grasp, and started twirling around the room. "Oh my God, Justin. I can't believe we're actually getting married." As she passed by the TV, Justin called out, "Kari-Berry, catch!" Kara turned, caught the video, and slid it into the VCR. She plopped down next to Justin on the sofa and rested her head on his shoulder. "I love you, Justin," she whispered. Justin kissed her head and stroked her hair. "I love you too." He smiled. "Besides, I knew you'd wanna watch this. With your huge crush on Leonardo DiCaprio and all." She grabbed a pillow and hit him over the head. "I do not have a crush on Leo. But he is a lot cuter than this guy right here." She ruffled his hair and he kissed her on the cheek. They watched the movie in silence until Jack Dawson lifted his wineglass up and toasted everyone at the 1st class dinner table. Then, Justin jumped up causing Kara to fall because she had been leaning against him. "I want ice cream," he announced bluntly. Kara looked at him strangely. "Ok..." Justin ran to the freezer in the kitchen. "Mr. Timberlake," Kara shouted. "There's no ice cream in there. those pigs you call friends ate it all this morning." Justin stomped his way back to the living room. He plopped back onto the couch. "But I need ice cream," he whined. "Damn friends." Kara snuggled up close to him. "Who needs friends when you have me?" "Well, who needs you when you have ice cream?" he mumbled. She hit him across the head with a pillow again and laughed. Justin frowned. Kara ruffled his hair. "Aww, poor baby. Why don't you just go out and buy some, then?" Justin stood up and put his hands on his hips. "Fine, I'll do just that, Little Miss," he said in a corny way with his southern accent. He turned to leave and Kara slapped his butt playfully. He turned around and lifted his eyebrowns as she laughed. Kara watched the rest of the movie alone. As the credits played, Kara stood up and flipped the TV off. She glanced at the clock. "Where the hell is Justin? Does it take that long to find chocolate-chocolate fudge chunk ice cream?" she said out loud. Kara was walking towards the kitchen to get a bite to eat when the phone rang. She tiredly walked over to the phone and picked it up. "Hello?" she answered. "Kara?" a voice asked "Joey! Hey!" she said as she started to play with the phone cord. "What's up?" Joey hesitated. Kara wasn't only Justins fiancee, she was also a close friend and he didnt know how to tell her what happened. "Kara, it's about Justin." Joey finally spoke up. Kara examined her nails. "Oh, have you seen him? He went out to get ice cream about an hour ago." She took a sip of water from the glass that had been sitting on the coffee table. Joey took a deep breath. "Kara, Justin got in a car accident." Kara dropped her glass in shock. "What'd you say? Cuz I thought you just said that Justin, my Justin, got in an accide-" She took a deep breath not being able to finish the sentence. "Kara, Im so sorry. I'm over at the hospital. I..." Joey couldn't finish his sentence either. "J, I'll be right over," Kara said at last. She hung the phone up and left for the hospital. Kara fell onto her bed still holding the picture but now with tears in her eyes. "I hate you, Justin." She dropped the framed photo in her lap. "I hate you for doing this." She glared at the smiling guy in the picture. "How could you do this to me?" Kara ran through doors of the ER waiting room. Joey was already there, pacing across the room. "Joe!" kara burst, out of breath. She gave him a big hug and ten they both sauntered over to the closest 2 empty seats in the room. "Where is he?" she asked softly. Joey looked down at his feet and was about to answer when a tall doctor with long blonde hair walked in. 'Dr.S.Martin M.D.' was printed on the nametag that was pinned neatly to the front pocket of her lab coat. She looked at her clipboard and asked quietly, "Ms. Adams?" Kara and Joey stood up and walked over to her. "Um, when Mr. Timberlake's vehicle hit the pole," Dr. Martin started, "He lost a lot of blood and might have had some damage done to some organs. We're going to have to operate. We'll be taking him to the OR soon." Back to Chapters Chapter 2 |
