"Five, four, three, two, one" It was now 2003, and Courtney didn't feel any different than she was suppose to. Her resolution was always the same-nothing. She gave up her dreams awhile back. It wasn't like she wasn't inspired by those people who were always optimistic about their lives and reached their goals early in life, but they only reminded her of old memories that stayed locked in her heart. Her early goals in life were outstretched imaginations, and while she was concentrating on her farfetched ideas, she lost track of the best things in life, like her best friend- Justin.
She walked into the small, empty room she remembered so clearly now. The memories came back swiftly and she inhaled a deep breath to control her emotions. The room was exactly the same as it has always been. The white walls were slightly worn down now, but the pale barber carpet was as new as ever. The twin-sized bed was pushed to the right side, and the dresser was opposite it. The room reminded her of her adolesence and lifestyles of growing up. It didn't look like a million dollar room, but to her it meant much more than that.
She stared in amazement of what was left of her childhood, the rest was lost a long time ago. She looked over at the dresser; a wooden, dusty frame was seated at the edge of it. She slowly walked over to it and her eyes wandered over the picture. It was a photograph of her and Justin their first time at Disney World. The memory flashed back to her suddenly. They rode excitedly across the water on a ferry, and soon were greeted by Minnie and Mickey. The world was going by slowly, and she spent every second of it with her best friend.
She loved him like a brother; they were inseperable. Perhaps you could say that Courtney's life depended on Justin. Like before they were born, God promised that Courtney would have an angel to protect her all her life. But some promises aren't meant to be, not even the ones God makes. It was foolish of both of them not to keep in contact with eachother. It ended bitterly, all the fights that went on continously. It was a game of friendship mixed with love, hate, and bittersweet memories, and the game would go on for a very long time.
"Justin, where are you?" Lynn questioned, concerned. "Court's been waiting for you for three hours, honey. You knew that you guys made plans tonight."
"Ma," Justin spoke apologetically. Lou scheduled an unexpected detour. It changed my plans around, we have to do promotion. Can you tell her that I'm sorry?"
Lynn shook her head at Courtney, giving her a sympathetic frown.
She grabbed the phone, sighing. "Justin, where are you?" She already knew where he was- not there with her. "You fucking promised, J."
"I'm sorry," Justin mumbled, gravely. "I really wish I could be there Court, but you know my schedule. I barely even have time for myself."
"J," she whispered, staggering over to the undersized room for a little more privacy, "You always have to fucking break me into pieces. What the hell is the matter with you?" She couldn't control herself anymore. The bottled up fury inside of her exploded like a volcano. "Don't give me that 'you barely have time for yourself' bullshit. It's always the same every single damn time! Do you know who you're talking to? I am your best friend you've got dammit, and you don't act like you even care shit for me anymore!"
Justin could feel the anger she had inside of her. He knew it was coming, but she wasn't suppose to hurt. He would give anything in the world for her to stop hurting. But what made him unhappy was the fact that he was causing her heart from aching.
"Courtney, what else can I fucking say? I'm truly sorry. It won't ever happen again, I give you my word."
She winced at the last part. "It won't ever happen again? That's what you said the last ten times, Justin. I can't take it any- fucking- more!" She slammed down the phone, angrily.
Her heart was agonizing, and her head was throbbing like no other. It hurt because she didn't understand why it seemed like Justin didn't care about her anymore. But it also hurt that she yelled at her best friend.
She glanced at a photo of them as kids. They are now teenagers, on the verge of adulthood. They were holding on to their teenage years for dear life, but all they could do was watch it slip before them like quicksand. They were only seventeen, but Justin replaced his youth for screaming girls and his love of music. And somehow, she understood that and didn't blame him. But she just couldn't handle being in his shadow.
Her fights with him were always the same. They were constantly bickering over petty, immature things that didn't really mean much, but make their friendship weaker. She loved him, she hated him, and now she was finally done with him. And she realized that her life revolved around him, but she couldn't bear not seeing his breathtaking face everyday like she did when they were younger. Maybe it is meant to be that some people grow apart. He was the source of her strength, but instead he just made her weak. His aspiring dreams were reached, his goals accomplished times ten. But she was just the same old southern bell that spoke slow and never really went anywhere, and found herself envying Justin's success.
He always told her how fun it was traveling around the world. It was like she was in a dream, guided by the images that were painted by Justin. She always loved it, and she wished that she could be with him seeing the world together, just as they did when they went to Disney World together when they were kids.
That never happened. She stared at the room one last time, the same room that has never changed, but changed her life in many ways. Closing the door, she wiped one last tear that managed to escape out of her soar eyes.
Slowly, she walked over to the living room, staring at how much around her had altered. "Thank you, Lynn. It was nice seeing you again."
Lynn smiled brightly, "Yeah, it was. You should come visit me more often. I miss you, you know?" She questioned sincerely.
"I know," she spoke, "Maybe I'll take your offer up one day." She gave Lynn a hug and walked to the door. "Bye."
"Bye, sweetie. See you later?"
Courtney opened the door, taking a step out. She looked down, and bumped into a tall, hard figure and glanced it. To her suprise, it was him. Her best friend, her brother, her first crush, and her first kiss. She unpredictably grabbed him into a hug, to his and her astonishment. The hostile emotions she previously felt about him demolished into trillions of tiny pieces.
"Justin," she whispered, "I missed you."
