Supplies
What kind of supplies do I need and where can I get them?
Chinchilla Food
Chinchillas need to be fed special pellet chow that is formulated for them. There are many different kinds, but not all of them are healthy. Chinchilla chow should be ONLY pellets with out raisins, banana chips or any other kind of treats. I use a brand of food called Mazuri, a company which is known for its excellent food for exotics and zoo animals.
Where can I find Mazuri Chinchilla food?
When I first used Mazuri Chin food, I was buying it online. However, I recently discovered some places that sell this particular brand.

Chinchilla Cages
Chinchilla's can't live in the same kind of cages as rabbits and Guinea pigs. They need tall cages with ledges to perch on. Chinchillas like to perch high in the air and can perform amazing spiderman moves on the sides of a wire cage. The minimum cage dimensions for one chinchilla is 24" by 14" by 24".
Where can I get an awesome chinchilla cage for a great price?
My suggestion if you need a chinchilla cage is to check out Martin's Cages in Pennsylvania. This company makes high-quality wire cages for all kinds of animals including chins. They can also custom design the cage of your dreams for a small fee. Their prices are decent and I've never heard anyone complain about them. They ship all over the country by sending the cages unmade and you have to put it together.Fortunatly for us Baltimoreans we are not too far away from where Martin's Cages is located. They are in Columbia, Pennsylvania in Lancaster County. If you go to the warehouse to pick up your order, they will put your cage together beforehand, free of charge. Now how awesome is that? They even sell toys, cage accessories and supplies for you to build your own cage!
What if I want to build my own cage?
Well that's great too! I've seen many custom cages which are tons better than anything you could buy in a store. Need a little help? Spoiledchins.net has plans to make a really nice and simple wood chinchilla cage. You can also buy wood houses and homemade wheels from this site. Don't forget to accessorize!
Other Supplies
Hay: Chinchillas need a constant supply of fresh Timothy Hay. Timothy hay is an important part on the chin diet and is a neccessary for a happy and healthy chin! I use Oxbow Timothy Hay for all my little furries--the chinchillas, guinea pigs, and gerbils. I choose to give my animals free hay, but hay cubes are also available as an alternative.
