Court's Decision
At first when the case was sent to the New York Supreme Court, the use of the in the schools was upheld on the basis that the prayer, but the case was sent to the U.S. Supreme Court, which thought differently. They reviewed the case but had a different verdict then the New York Supreme court, They found that the idea of a state mandated or sponsored prayer was against the command of the First Amendment, which bans aganist the establishment of relgion.
They found that the prayer violated the Establishment Clause, and  in turn reversed the state's decision of upholding the prayer and banned it and all religous type prayer in all schools.
