Hello and Welcome.  The first thing I would like to establish is what depression is and what it is not.  Hope this offers some insight.
What is Depression?
The main thing we must understand about depression is that it is an illness.  This illness not only affects the mind, but the entire body.  One in five people will suffer from depression in their lifetimes.  Depression is the leading cause of drug addiction, alcohol addiction, along with others.  It can be successfully treated in approximately 80% of those who suffer from it.  Depression is not biased.  It affects all ages, races, all economic groups, and both genders, but more women suffer from depression than men.  Over half of the people who have depression do not get the treatment needed and when depression goes untreated it can lead to suicide.
Depression is not...
You should not be ashamed to get help if you feel you have depression.  Depression is not the same as feeling "blue."  It does not signify weakness or a flaw.  It is not "just a phase."  You cannot tell a person with depression to snap out of it!
When someone talks about depression we only think of one type of depression which is called unipolar depression.  There is another form of the illness which is called bi-polar disorder.  This is when a person has both depressed moods and manic moods.  The manic side usually exhibits things such as: visions of grandeur (looking at things on grand schemes), increase of energy, decreased sleep, excited or irritable at inappropriate times, fast-paced talking, sexual promiscuity, racing thoughts which often times skip around, poor judgement, and impulsive behavior (such as going on large spending sprees...sometimes to the point of spending all their money).  People with Bipolar sort of yo-yo through their emotions.  At one point, they could be depressed and not getting out of their house and then a few days or weeks later, depending on how rapid their swings are, they could be unable to sleep and going on shopping sprees.  It is hard to get a person suffering from Bipolar to take their medications.  Most of them enjoy their manic phase because they tend to get a lot done and are more creative.  It is the depressive phase some feel is more disruptive to them.
This will take you to the Depression page.
