"Seldom has a generation given so little of permanent value and so much that was troublesome to the future"

We disagree with this statement. The twenties were a time of great change in society. We would not be the same people, or live in the same country today if the twenties had not taken place. Click HERE to see a list of important events that occurred during the twenties. Now imagine what life would be like, if none of these events had occurred. We would be technologically, medically, culturally, and socially behind by at least twenty years.

If the twenties did nothing else, they left a lot for future generations to learn from. For instance, today, by looking at the economic instabilities of the so-called "bull market," future generations have recognized what can be done to prevent the nation from plummeting into a depression as severe as the one that began in 1929.

Flappers and other women suffragists "paved the way" for future generations by setting forth the example of feminine leadership and ability that no one, up until that point, really knew existed. Flappers questioned the strict moral values that had kept women trapped inside the home for the past few hundred years. Up until that point, there were not many women who had ever tried to break the chains of feminine suppression.

The younger generation's mentality was quite different from that of their elders. Conflicts arose just as they do today about the breakdown of morals, racism, etc. Perhaps one of the reasons that youth today are more apt to fight for change when they see fit is because of a remnant left over from the changes that took place during the 20's, when youth became more daring.

The twenties were also a time period in which sports were unprecedented.  Americans felt that these sports players represented all of the qualities that should be in an American.  They were looked upon as courageous, disciplined, determined, hard working, successful role models.  Not only were they looked upon as such, but many such as Babe Ruth, set records that have taken years to beat.

The Twenties marked a time of great musical enthusiasm, experimentation, and creativity.  Jazz music, which was developed during this time, has become a necessary element in the world of music today.  Any music store has an entire section dedicated to jazz, and we have to thank all of the people who went against what was morally acceptable at the time, and composed something that was in their hearts and would mean a lot to future generations.

In the realm of technology, this was a huge growth period.  As electricity became more available, people began using and inventing new appliances which we still depend upon today.  In today's world, we could not live without a radio or a refrigerator, and most of us can't even imagine what life must have been like without one.

If you looked at our list of events which occurred in the twenties, you will notice a wide variety of medical developments.  One was Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin.  If you erase the twenties, there would be no penicillin, which has become a very important medicine in the nineties.  Anesthesia was beginning to be used more efficiently during this time period.  This helped to prevent pain during surgery.  (Novocain was still not developed, so you really didn't' want to get a cavity......)

All together, the twenties were a necessary part of American history.  Without them, the nineties would be set back by twenty years.  Imagine living the seventies over (It might actually be worse than the fox hit the 70's show.  )  gosh it gives Val the shivers.....)  Truly, the twenties were an era in which innovation and prosperity worked hand in hand to push America into more modern thinking.
