RUNES According to myth , the Elder Futhark was revealed to the Pagan God Odon after he hung for 9 days nights , wounded by impaling himself on his own spear to the (Yagdrasill) , the world tree. The name 'Odin' is beleived derived from the Norse word 'Od', which means 'wind' or 'spirit'.
Runemasters taught the wisdom of the 'Runes' thoughout all the tribes of Europe. The word 'RUNE' which has evolved though Germanic, Norse Old English languages, means' whispered secret' . The secret is the way their forces can therefore be put to use. It was 'whispered' because the knowledge was passed on within the oral traditions. There are three major versions of runes , the oldest is the ELDER FUTHARK . Futhark is derived from the first six letters of its alphabet : f- u-th-a-r-k. Powers behind the 'Runes' operate on all levels & dimensions, the devision of the runes into 3 groups of 8 indicates the 3 streams of mind , matter & spirit in which their powers could be contacted .The Upper world, Middle world , Lower world. RUNES were glyphs of mobile forces that illistrate the Flow of these forces .Each Rune has a multitude of meanings. There are more uses for runes than you can shake a stave at! - Divination
- Perhaps the best-known use of runes is in divination.
Many variations and systems are still in use today. Much information is available in books and on the internet.
- Talisman:
- This word is used to identify a good luck charm or symbol.
With runes, a talisman can be one rune to which you feel a certain affinity. It may also be a rune you wear or carry in order to draw from specific attributes - Bindrunes:
- Bindrunes can be made by combining two or more runes, almost exclusively from the same system.
A bindrune can have many uses, such as an identifying mark (not unlike a brand), a symbol denoting aspects of both runes, and a combination talisman.
-
Intentional Use:
- Whether with ink, paint, or a fingertip, runes are often inscribed on objects with the intent that the desired characteristics within be obtained.
For instance, when embarking on a journey, one might choose to inscribe the rune Raidho/Rad upon the steering wheel. In the Elder Futhark, Raidho/Rad is a rune of journey and safe travel. - Purposeful Runescript:
-
A purposeful runescript is an inscription of specific runes on a surface.
This differs from an Intentional Use rune in that this utilizes a series of runes. While it could contain any number of runes, these runescripts usually contain three, seven, or nine runes. This method is believed effective when a particular outcome is desired, not unlike a prayer. An example could be an ailing grandmother. One would choose the runes that give strength, health, victory, overcoming obstacles, as well as other desired attributes. These runes are then visibly inscribed on a pre-determined surface with unyielding intent. I've seen them used on a piece of paper which was then rolled and secured like a scroll (either to be kept or burned), painted as a decoration on a wooden box, written with charred wood on an object in the outdoors, inscribed on a plaque with a wood burning tool, and drawn in a stone surface with a dremmel tool.
- Folk Magic
- Runes used to be incorporated into every stage of the construction process as a draw for luck, health, prosperity, etc. or to ward off misfortune and calamity. Today's architecture still reflects the heritage of using runes.
Runes bring a history rich in lore, tradition, and mystery.
