CAJAMARCA
" Cajamarca, is a beautiful colonial town and the most important in the northern highlands. This was one of the biggest cities in the Inca Empire and was where the Incas and the Spanish had their first showdown . Here  Pizarro ambushed and captured Atahualpa, the Inca emperor. Despite thier huge numerical inferiority the heavily-armed Spaniards took advantage of an already divided Inca Kingdom to launch their audicious attack. In an attempt to buy his freedom from the Spaniards,Atahualpa offered Pizarro a room full of gold and a hut filled twice over with silver as ransom. Pizarro, in his lust for precious metals could not but accept, but the exercise proved futile as the Spanish, fearing a mobilisation of Inca troops, executed the Inca leader once the treasure had been collected. There was no army coming to Atahualpa's rescue. Pizarro and Almagro had reacted hastily to a false rumour and their fatal decision was criticised at the time by Emperor Charles V."
