THE ATTACAMA DESERT
" The Attacama Desert extends over most of the Far North to the Peruvian border. The main cities are Iquique and Arica; between them are old mineral workings and even older geoglyphs. Large areas of the Andean highlands have been set aside as national parks. Inland the Central depression is arid and punctuated by salt-flats south of Iquique. Between Iquique and Arica it is crossed by four gorges. East of this depression lies the sierra, the western branch of the Andes, beyond which is a high plateau, the altiplano from which rises volcanic peaks. There are also a number of lakes here, the largest of which is Lago Chungara"
