            “I’m innocent, I tell you!” She screamed, trying to flee from him, but her legs would not obey. Her body moved forwards like a robot, kneeling exactly seven paces away. Crimson eyes raked over her body dispassionately, expressionless from beneath a fringe of dark hair.

            “You are not innocent.” His voice was cold.

            “I swear! I didn’t kill him! I was framed!” The woman began to cry, tears running down her cheeks. “It was an accident…!”

            Her words abruptly choked off as she clutched her chest. Mikami watched silently, arms crossed, as she crumpled forwards. He depressed a button, sounding a bell, and two guards robed in red came in and silently carried the body out.

            Mikami glanced at the open Death Note in his lap, Shinigami eyes silently moving over the lines, and waited for the next victim to approach.

           

            It was early afternoon when it had concluded, and he stretched tiredly, rubbing his eyes. Outside of the receiving chamber, he could drop his façade. After all, he represented Kira, and he could not show weakness. Four guards escorted him to his Lord’s chambers, ever vigilant for trespassers.

            Light was waiting, and as the door clicked shut behind him, Mikami sank to his knees in a bow.

            “Rise.” Kira spoke, and Mikami did so. “You did well.”

            “My lord…”

            “Hush.” Three steps, and then Kira was there at his side, and he shivered as the younger man examined him. “Now is not the time for discussion.”

            The command was implicit, and it was with a sense of relief that they adjourned to the bedroom.

 

            After it was completed, Light lay there, and listened to Mikami breathe as he threaded his fingers in long hair.

            Sometimes, he wondered if there was only one innocent left.
