They are not in love, Light repeats, not in love, because he is Kira and Kira doesn’t love, but that doesn’t mean his heart doesn’t skip a beat when Mikami stares at him with adoration in those crimson eyes.
Mikami loves him, but sometimes, Light wonders if it’s really him Mikami sees, or Kira, which doesn’t make any sense because he is Kira, but he can’t help but feel slightly jealous of the person who he is.
After all, Mikami would die for Kira, but would Mikami die for Light?
Mikami stares at Light in adoration, tracing the syllables of his name, though he would never, ever write that name in his Death Note, not even if his death would result.
Sometimes, Light stays the night at Mikami’s place. Mikami always has something waiting for him when he wakes up, and though it’s nothing compared to what his mother used to cook, or what he can order, the personal touch helps.
Mikami enjoys preparing breakfast, despite the early hour, and he watches indulgently as Light picks at his rice and miso soup. He used to think that Kira was perfection, but now, he decides that Light’s little imperfections are endearing.
Mikami wants to be perfect for Kira, but Light thinks he’s close enough.
On the nights when Light doesn’t come, Mikami often keeps his cell phone on, hoping, hoping that Kira will call him.
Takada wonders, sometimes, when she watches Light sleep after their excursions, if he’s really thinking of her at all. His eyes always seem to be looking for someone else, but whom?
Light knows that sacrifices have to be made for the greater good. He’s always known this, so he thinks of Mikami and Takada never comments.
Mikami’s hair is surprisingly soft for being such a mess, and Light enjoys running his fingers through it, not thinking of someone else in the past that also had messy hair.
The past is dead and buried, but Mikami’s heart aches when Light murmurs nonsense syllables while half-awake.
Mikami’s pen skritch-scratches over the lined paper, filling the pages with the law of Kira, wanting it to be enough.
He listens to Takada’s voice on the phone, nodding. The instructions are simple, and he will not fail, not when victory is so close.
The thought of defeat doesn’t even cross Light’s mind, as he stands with the others in Daikoku’s warehouse, and waits for Mikami to arrive.
He writes madly, frantically, almost foaming at the mouth, eyes ablaze, because this is the end of the opposition, and now, Kira will rule the world.
Light watches in horror as Near reveals his deception, and suddenly, being Kira isn’t enough any more.
Mikami’s screaming, and the words fall like drops of poison, but he can’t believe that this is happening, and there’s no rationalization for this failure unless Light is not God.
Light’s bleeding, crumpled on the ground, and he realizes that he trusted too much, and wants to laugh bitterly for falling into his own trap.
He always thought God was perfect, but now, sitting in his cell with his wrists manacled and his eyes dancing blood red over the face of every man that walks past, Mikami acknowledges that it was just a façade.

One feels kind of sorry for Mikami. Light sleeps around. Oh my god, I wrote Light x L hints. I’m going to find a bridge now. Roxy, you are a horrible corrupting influence! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This was written for the 20_notes DN 20 truths community. And after I finished, I realized that 20 truths weren’t enough for this couple. Ah well… maybe I’ll write more of my OTP later…
Just for reference, Of Gods and Men is writer’s blocked.
