What is Reiki?
The word 'Reiki', when translated, means universal life force - similar to the word 'chi' which we hear in martial arts. This means that it is the energy of life! When we give Reiki energy to others in a healing, we are giving life-force energy.

What does Reiki do?
When we are giving a Reiki, we are giving the body the energy of life. This energy heals on all levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It helps us to heal more quickly. It facilitates the flow of energy round the body by removing blockages or improving partially blocked areas of energy flow. It also reduces our stress and tension.

How many levels of Reiki are there?
There are 3 levels of Reiki - Reiki First Degree (also known as Reiki 1), Reiki Second Degree(also known as Reiki 2), and Reiki Master.

Reiki First Degree is completed with a series of 4 attunements given by a Reiki Master. This level is where you are introduced to the energy and learn how to work with it. Although you can work as a professional healer with this level, it is more commonly used for self-healing and healing for family, friends, pets etc.. During this stage, you will learn how you and the energy will work together. you will learn how the different sensations you feel during healing are indicative of different healing aspects eg/you will learn how your hands feel when there is a blockage, or an old injury, a serious injury or illness, when there is only partial energy flow, when the person is highly stressed etc... In this level there is only one symbol to learn called the 'Tamarasha' symbol.

Reiki Second Degree is only one attunement, but there are 3 symbols for you to learn - 'Chokurei', 'Seihaki', and the 'Honshazeshonen'. You will learn more about these symbols if you go on to Reiki 2. These symbols include one that activates second degree energy and is a power boost, one which works on a mental/emotional level, and one which enables you to send healing over distance and time.

The third level is Reiki Master, which is completed with one attunement and enables the recipient to attune others to Reiki. It is the level where you agree and commit to teach others. The symbol you learn at this level is the Master symbol.

Do I have to have a particular belief?
You do not have to have any particular belief or belong to any group whatsoever. Many churchgoers are attuned to this energy as well as many others with a wide range of spiritual beliefs. You may choose to belong to a Reiki group or you may choose to work alone. It does not interefere in any way with any religious or spiritual belief you may have - nor does the person receiving the healing, have to have any particular beliefs. Reiki will work for everyone!

What will I feel?
Most of the time, you will notice that your hands will become warm, sometimes very hot, sometimes cold, or perhaps they will feel 'buzzy'. Often your fingers will twitch as though there is a gentle electrical current flowing through them. All these sensations are quite common and it is up to you to learn what they mean. For example, if my hands feel cold - it usually means that there is decreased or totally blocked energy flow through that area; if my hands are hot then there is a problem in that area that is taking a lot of healing energy; if my own body begins to sweat then that person is receiving a huge amount of healing; if my hands feel buzzy it usually indicates that they are highly stressed or have arthritis; if they are warm then there is a gentle flow of energy going through my hands.

If you experience a hot flow of energy for a long time, it may indicate that the problem needs intensive healing over a period of several weeks. If the flow is initially hot and then cools, it may indicate that the problem is not too severe and may be healed over a shorter period, or that the area has taken all the energy it needs to heal and has lessened the demand for energy. The sensations can be different for different people so you have to find what it means for you.

What can I expect?
When giving a Reiki, we know that the person is receiving healing energy. I have seen miracles, and I have seen healing of varying degrees and on different levels, so I believe anything is possible and go into every healing with an open heart and mind. However, no matter what - a healing occurs.

Sometimes we work with terminally ill patients and may hope for a physical healing, yet there will be a healing on a mental or emotional or a spiritual level. Other times we will work with the very ill and see a miracle happen before our eyes. All is possible.

Can I do Reiki anywhere?
Ideally, you can give Reiki anywhere! Although it is good to give a full body Reiki healing which can take an hour or more, we can also give Reiki to someone in a chair, someone in a hospital bed, we can give 'spot' healings for sore areas such as a sore stomach or headache etc... I will explain later how to set up your Reiki area, but Reiki can be done anytime and anywhere when it is needed - a coffee shop, the office, at a picnic or anywhere else you might be!

What causes energy blocks?
We live in such a stressful world that we are often worried or upset. These feelings are often internalized and stop the natural flow of energy through the body. If we physically injure ourselves, this will also create a disturbance in the flow of energy around the body.
