Olivia's Website Tips:
The following are some suggestions that I myself have written in hopes that they may help you make a better website. I've seen a lot of websites, so everytime I saw something that irked my nerves I added it to my list, and everytime I saw something that looked like a good idea, I added that too. Keep in mind that these suggestions are just that, suggestions and opinions that I think will help you get your site get off on the right foot. So read at your own risk!
+ To help promote your site, join some listings / exchanges. These are always a good way of advertising.
+ Have some 'link back' buttons for your site so people can link you. Make sure your buttons are a variety of sizes- if someone wants to link you and you only have huge banners, they may decide not to link you.
+ Visit other sites, leave guestbook entries and apply to their interact features. The webmasters want people to use them, otherwise they wouldn't be there ;)
+ When you type up your site, use proper grammar and punctuation- if you don't you'll come across as someone who doesn't really care about their site or people will think you're too dumb or immature to understand how to use grammar and punctuation.
+ DoN't TyPe LiKe ThIs. I've never met anyone that said, " Wow, do I love reading sticky caps, it's so difficult to read, and I love struggling to read text."
+ Don't use too much chat speak. An occasional 'lol' is understandable, but if you use too much you might give the wrong impression that you're dumb again . . . and a lot of people don't know what chat abbreviations stand for.
+ Spell check is your friend, so use it! Human friends work good too, so ask your buddy to proof a page for you and make sure you don't have any embarassing mistakes spell check might miss, like 'He shit a baseball.' instead of 'He hit a baseball.'
+ Keep in mind that everyone is human and everyone makes mistakes. Even if you use spellcheck and proofread you may still have a few mistakes, but using spellcheck and such keeps them at a minimum.
+ Put original content on your site, no one wants to see the same tired old stuff that they saw on every other site.
+ NEVER copy someone else's information, layout, or content. That's just wrong.
+ Have things on your site which others can interact with, like a guestbook, a tagboard, button exchanges, or other interact features.
+ Be considerate when you add music to your site. For some people, it takes a while to load and can be obnoxious. If you do add music, make sure you have a way for the visitor to turn it off if they don't want to hear it.
+ Get someone to look at your layout before or just after you post it. They may see an error you didn't or notice some non-working links. (Proofviewing)
+ Have you considered getting hosted? Freeservers aren't bad, but hosting has its benefits. When you're hosted, you have a 'team' to help you out, and (in most situations) your host and probably some of the other hostees will be more expierenced than you and can help you out with web-troubles you have.
+ When you make your layout, make sure the text colors can still be read easily on the background. Don't make a lemon yellow layout with neon green text unless you want your viewers to burn their retinas.
