Never have they been better.
One of the most fun concerts I've ever seen came courtesy of Blue Rodeo this year. The band was tight, and the addition of the horns, string and a virtuoso violinist have made them stronger than ever! Jim's energy was unbelievable, and Greg's...well, Greg was Greg. The setlist, while not offering any surprises, was well chosen from past and present. All in all, the best BR concert yet...and the crowd was ready for it! They closed to Bluesfest this year, on Sunday the 13th, and there was no better way to end it.
I snapped this while it was still light out. I love Greg in front of the Bluesfest banner...perfectly framed, if I do say so myself!
Jim jamming with the incredible violin player on Five Days in May. I didn't realize until I got the film back that I'd caught her in mid-kick!
During the third song, they shared a mike - they got all the stunts out of the way early, because photographers were only allowed up front during the first three songs, at which time they were shoved aside to give the rest of us a clear view. A great idea from a band that clearly has a great deal of respect for their fans!
Greg captured in mid-howl during Girl In Green.
Bob Egan on pedal steel and the Bushwhack Horns. At least, I think it's still the Bushwhack Horns...that's who they had with them last year.
Bazil somewhat timidly took the lead vocals on Stage Door...he's really not a bad singer!
During the encore, Jim and Greg finally were close enough and I was at the right angle to get them at their respective mikes. I think this was during Railroad Song, but I'm not sure.
This is far and away my favourite picture of the night. I love the composition - the red and green light murkily illuminating a sombre-looking Greg in perfect pose. I knew there was a reason I showed up before they opened the gates at noon to catch the guys coming on after 8:00pm so I could get up front!
