The fourth season is a lot like the first, which makes a person like me, who's been with the show since the first season, really happy. The first season showed us seven kids traveling a digital world in order to defeat their enemies so that they can save the digital world and their own. Spirits has that sort of feel to it. It takes kids, puts them in a strange world, and has them traveling again. The characters of Spirits seem to be very much like the original DigiDestined, with a leader, a rebel, a little kid, a whiner, you get the idea. That also made me feel better (watching the few episodes that I've seen.) I felt like in some strange way, my precious Tai and Yamato had returned to me. In fact, voice actor Michael Reisz actually returns to the series to voice the leader of this season's pack (instead of the rebel Matt in 01.) When I heard his voice, I was like "WHOA!! I can't believe it, WOOHOO!" It was like listening to a Matt reincarnate.
One of this season's complete changes is one that totally and completely turns around what hardcore fans saw as what Digimon was back in the day. In the first three seasons, our chosen children are paired up with Digimon partners that reflect themselves. In the fourth season, the kids actually become the Digimon in a process known as Spirit Evolution. My initial reaction to this new form of Digivolutions was "What the hell was that?! What happened? Did I miss something?" While I think this was an unbelievably brave and even maybe unnecessary move for the series to take, I think it's the coolest change they've ever made. And this is coming from ME, Lightmistress2020--- a chick who very much dislikes change. I would have been happy to see something so imaginative in the first season. In the past I've objected to many things that have happened to the show, such as the way zero two turned out... even to this day I think that zero two's new characters were a little hollow. But like I was saying, Spirit Evolution is possibly the only change I have actually accepted as a good change to this series. It's... cool. I mean, what else?
It has been great to see first season Digimon make cameos in Spirits, and also to see such close similarities between the two seasons, even down to the voice actors. I'm sure I can get more on here soon, lol...
