"The Hub; Each Spoke; The Rim; The Distaff; Each Flaxen Thread."
The official Insignia of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution shall be in the form of a spinning wheel and distaff. The insignia shall be worn only at functions of the Society and its chapters.
The DAR Insignia, at the top of this page, was designed by Dr. George Goode in 1891 and adopted by the NSDAR on May 26, 1891. It repeats the spinning wheel emblem already adopted as part of the Society's seal. The spinning wheel from which the original sketch was made was one that was used by Dr. Goode's mother early in the 1800's, and which he later donated to our Society. The blue enamel rim of the spinning wheel and the white gold or platinum flax on the distaff represent the Society's colors, which are the dark blue and white used as the colors of the military staff of General George Washington. The name of the Society is engraved on the blue rim, which is set about with 13 stars representing the 13 colonies. Only DAR members may purchase or wear the Insignia pin, and each is engraved on the back with the member's name and membership number. The Insignia pin is worn with a ribbon of the Society's blue, with a white edge, ribbed and watered. The ribbon is worn on the left shoulder, with the Insignia placed at the bottom, closest to the wearer's heart. Unanimously adopted by The Board of Management on May 26, 1891, the Official Insignia was patented on September 22, 1891. The golden wheel of the Insignia represents a Spinning Wheel, the platinum or white gold Distaff represents Flax, the blue Rim and Distaff carry the colors of the Society, and the Stars represent the Thirteen Colonies.
