| Devotional Survivor! June 7, 2004 |
||||||||||||
| They've taken America by storm! If you're not tuning in each week you're hearing about them through your friends, media and co-workers. I'm referring to the survivor shows, where a number of people spend, in some cases, months in a home without communi-cation to the outside world, or on a deserted island with the same conditions. They are left to "fend' for themselves, all with cameras focused on them twenty-four hours a day so that the world can watch their every move, and especially, so that once a week we can all observe as one "unfortunate" person gets "voted off" the island by his or her peers, losing forever, their opportunity to win the big bucks. I'm no anthropologist, but I pose this question, "What does this really say about our cul-ture?" While I don't want to be offensive to the participants, I find myself asking, "What kind of existance do these people have, that they are able to take three months out of their lives to pursue such an endeavor?" If you are employed, could you just take three months away from your work? Would your husband, wife or family support your leaving them for three months to do this? Would you want them too? A local disc jockey sharess my personal view to the "T." Epressing his bewilderment as to why these shows are so popular. "It's just people with "no lives," being viewed with fascination by people with "no lives." Sounds a little harsh? Maybe. . . but what a sad commentary on our society! Picture this. The world awakes one morning to chaos. All over the country and iin nations abroad certain family members are suddenly gone. Men and women mourn for their departed spouses, and some, even their children. There's an appearance of mas-sive cemetery vandalism as tombstones are overturned and a multitude of graves are even empty. Transportation is a nightmare! Drivers, pilots and others have left their posts, causing crashes and massive traffic tie-ups. If it is Sunday, church attendance is down, as many parishoners are among the missing . . .some are not. Headlines read, "Millions Missing!" The World is in a state of shock. Were their loved ones abducted by an alien? Or worse yet, were they "voted off the island?" Not! Those who know Jesus are safe in his arms, as he has caught them up to be with him forever. They are the survivors! The deciding vote was cast when they made their decision to give their lives to him. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 says, "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will be with the Lord forever." The question is, "Are you a survivor?" If not, may I respectfully suggest that you "get a life!" "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
