The Amestris Military
The military plays an exceedingly important role in the plotline, as well as providing a significant amount of comic relief. On this page, you will find all of the significant military members - namely, those that get named and whose absenses would be detrimental to the plot itself. After all, there are hundreds of military officials that are pictured, although only a few are important or even get named. Please note that unless otherwise stated, all State Alchemists automatically have a rank equivalent to that of a Major, although their authority is really only equivalent to that of a Captain.

Yoki
Rank: First Lieutenant
First Appearence: Chapter 3
Species: Human

Yoki, the exceedingly greedy Lieutenant who oversees the Youswell mining town. Because of his greedy nature, Yoki will do anything for enough gold to bribe the higher ups into giving him a higher position. He's thwarted by Ed, however, and not only does he lose the deed to his town, he also loses his military status and is currently Scar's servant (although he'd like to think otherwise).

Haruko
Rank: Major General
First Appearence: Chapter 4
Species: Human

Haruko is very loyal to the military, although he also enjoys a weekend off with his family. He quickly gets shot in the ear by a train hijacker, and he is one of the few people that even Mustang has to listen to orders from.

Roy Mustang
Rank: State Alchemist - Colonel
Second Name: "Flame Alchemist"
First Appearence: Chapter 4
Species: Human
Special Qualities: His alchemy focuses on flames - when he snaps his fingers, the special cloth of his glove rubs together and creates a spark, and he then uses alchemy and that spark to burst what he wants into flames.

Being the Flame Alchemist really fits Roy's personality - he's quite hot-headed and quick to spark up a relationship with a woman (although his main love life is thought to be with Miss Hawkeye). He's got an... interesting sense of humor, often making fun of Ed's height, attempting to avoid doing his paperwork by pushing it on a subordinate, or *even if unconsciously* attempting to foil Havoc's newest relationship with a girl. His ambition is to become Fuhrer so that he can make changes around the military (including but not limited to making all female personel wear miniskirts as part of their uniform). He is great friends with Maes Hughes (even if he gets easily aggrivated by the constant barraging of photos of Elysia), and when Maes is killed, Roy starts to almost obsess over finding the killer.

Riza Hawkeye
Rank: First Lieutenant
First Appearence: Chapter 4
Species: Human

One of Hawkeye's main roles in the military is to make sure Mustang manages to actually get his paperwork done. And she's not afraid to pull out the gun, either, although she doesn't actually shoot at the Colonel. There are hints of a more than Colonel-and-subordinate relationship between the two of them, as both of them seem to care deeply for each other's safety. Hawkeye's main goal is to do everything in her own power to help Mustang reach his own goal.

Kain Feury
Rank: Master Sergeant
First Appearence: Chapter 4
Species: Human

Feury is a timid young man whose main role in the military is radio communications. Regardless of his non-fighting role, however, he is still quite loyal to Mustang and is also helping to push him towards being Fuhrer.

Vato Falman
Rank: Warrant Officer
First Appearence: Chapter 4
Species: Human

Also one of Mustang's main supporters, Falman works in the Investigations Department and is quite knowledgable about military events and criminal records. Unfortunately, he eventually winds up with the job of guarding Barry the Chopper and is forced to assume the role of the "kidnapped officer". (Heck, you'd think it was unfortunate if you were stuck in the slums with a suit of armor that is obsessed with chopping people up and your only thing to look forward to during the day was the daily newspaper and the possible brief visit from Havoc.)

Heymans Breda
Rank: Second Lieutenant
First Appearence: Chapter 4
Species: Human

Yet another one of Mustang's followers, Breda isn't really all that important a guy until after Hughes' death, at which time he helps with getting Maria Ross to safety in Xing. Around that time, he also helps Ed and Armstrong go meet Ross over at the Xerxes ruins. He is often seen either eating something or drinking something (although usually non-alcoholic).

Jean Havoc
Rank: Second Lieutenant
First Appearence: Chapter 4

Another one of Mustang's followers, Havoc is a man who is out there to get a girl. He is desperate for a girlfriend. (Although the fact that he smokes may or may not actually chase away the ladies.) It often happens that whenever Havoc gets a girlfriend, she is often hanging out with Mustang soon after. Regardless of that, however, Havoc is willing to give his own life (or, as it happens, the usage of his legs) in order to help Mustang make it to the Fuhrer position.

Shou Tucker
Rank: State Alchemist
Second Name: "Sewing-Life Alchemist"
First Appearence: Chapter 5
Species: Human
Special Qualities: Specializes in making chimeras; has made chimeras that can speak (see below)

Tucker is one of the main chimera researchers in the military. In his admissions test, he presented the first discovered chimera that could speak. All it said, however, was "I want to die", and it died a few days later from starving itself. Around that same time, his wife "left" him and his daughter, Nina. Two years later, in his assessment, he has yet to figure out how to create a new talking chimera, so he does it the way he did the first time - by using a human (this time Nina) as one of the creatures in the transmutation. Eventually, he gets killed by Scar.

Maes Hughes
Rank: Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier General)
First Appearence: Chapter 6
Species: Human

If one could only use two words to use describe Hughes, the best answer would be the phrase "family man". He adores his wife, Gracia, and his little daughter, Elysia. (He even brings photos in to work and shows them off to everyone, regardless of how many times they've seen them before, and he can often be seen on the phone telling a disgruntled Mustang about his daughter's latest acts of cuteness.) However, Hughes does know when it's time to be silly and when it's time to be serious - he is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Investigations Department, after all, and he is one of Mustang's greatest supporters. He isn't an alchemist (in fact, he literally calls alchemists freaks at one point), but he is an excellent shot with his knives, although he doesn't get into battle very often due to his job in Investigations. His intelligence and curiosity, however, do get him into trouble when he figures out the secret behind the Fuhrer, and he ends up shot in the chest, buried, and promoted two ranks for being "killed in action".

Alex Louis Armstrong
Rank: State Alchemist - Major
Second Name: "Strong Arm Alchemist"
First Appearence: Chapter 6
Species: Human
Special Qualities: He uses the transmutation circles on his metallic gloves, punching the ground and molding it into spikes and other dangerous objects. Although sometimes he will use it to show off some of the ol' Armstrong Family artistic-ness.

Don't let his muscles fool you - Armstrong might be a tough man on the outside (often showing off his bulging muscles, much to the dismay of those around him), but on the inside, he is a real softie. (Hence, as the Fuhrer puts it, why he hasn't been promoted past Major yet, even though he is quite the asset to the Investigations Department.) He is extremely proud of his family heritage, occasionally pointing out skills that he's inherited from them. He also gives off an aura of extreme happy-go-lucky-ness, occasionally giving off so much that he forgets to monitor how much strength he's using. (This often ends with a bunch of broken bones on his "victim's" part.)

Doctor Tim Marcoh
Rank: Alchemist hired by the military (unknown whether or not he is truly a "State Alchemist")
First Appearence: Chapter 8
Species: Human
Special Qualities: His research in the past specialized in the Philosopher's Stone, and he was the one who figured out exactly how to do it.

Doctor Marcoh was the one who first discovered the secret to creating the Philosopher's Stone. He even created some (albeit flawed) versions of it for use during the Ishbal war. Now somewhat suicidal due to all that he's seen, he goes by the name of Doctor Mauro curing the inhabitants of a small town of their ailments using said imperfect compound in order to somewhat atone for his sins. Or at least, he would if the Homunculi hadn't captured him and threatened to destroy said little town if he doesn't cooperate with them.

Maria Ross
Rank: Second Lieutenant
First Appearence: Chapter 10
Species: Human

Maria Ross is a kind Lieutenant who cares deeply for the Elrics and just wants them to trust adults more. Never to be drawn without her distinctive birthmark just underneath her left eye (except in the case of a certain impersonating palm tree), she winds up accused of Hughes' murder and sentenced to death. In fact, most of Amestris presumes her dead. However, thanks to a quick-thinking Roy, she has been smuggled out of the country and is currently traveling to Xing with Fu.

Denny Brosh
Rank: Sergeant
First Appearence: Chapter 10
Species: Human

Brosh is occasionally slow on the uptake, slightly cowardly, and not the brightest flame in the lantern. However, like Ross, he cares deeply for the Elrics' safety. Although some fans perceive something... more between himself and Maria. (He was quite upset when she 'died', after all.)

Sheska
Alternate Name Spellings: Scieszka (French)
Rank: Librarian, so it's not too clear...
First Appearence: Chapter 10
Species: Human
Special Qualities: Photographic Memory

A bookworm by nature, Shezka loves reading a bit too much. In fact, whenever she gets a job at a library, she ends up being fired because she's too absorbed in reading to actually do her job... her mother, however, is in the hospital, so she needs the money. Because she keeps being fired from her jobs, she has relatively low self-esteem. However, she does have a very special skill - she has a photographic memory and can recall anything she's ever read even once word for word perfectly. This comes in very handy for Hughes and the Investigations Department when the First Branch of the Central Library (along with all the criminal records stored within) is burned to the ground.

Zolf Kimbley
Rank: previously State Alchemist (Major), now unknown
Second Name: I'm not sure if it's official in the manga yet, although he's usually referred to by his anime title of the "Crimson Alchemist"
First Appearence: His sillouette is first pictured in chapter 7, although he is only first mentioned by name in chapter 13. We first see his full body (ie his full face including eyes) in chapter 59.
Species: Human
Special Qualities: His alchemy deals in explosions. It is unknown as of yet how exactly he does it.

In present day, Kimbley is a convict who stays locked up in the prison next to the Fifth Laboratory, his hands separated so he can't alchemize his way out. He is also kind of insane and enjoys listening to the sound of explosions. Back during the war with Ishbal, however, he was one of the main State Alchemists participating in the war.

King Bradley
Also Known As: Wrath
Rank: Fuhrer/President
First Appearence: Technically, his first appearence is chapter 15, although he appears before that in the volume 3 bonus chapter.
Species: previously human, now Homunculus
Special Qualities: See Wrath under the Homunculi section

Hmmm... Fuhrer King Bradley. (Technically, there are two dots on the u, but I don't feel like looking up that particular accent.) He knows when to be serious, but he often jokes around within his serious moments (or at least pretends to). Ever since he became Fuhrer, Amestris has pretty much constantly been at war, but they've always won. Oh, and did I mention that he's not human? (Head over to the Homunculi section to read more about that.)

Foker
Rank: Sergeant
First Appearence: Chapter 15
Species: Human

Foker is one of Hughes' subordinates. He's not really important, however, for much except providing random inspiration for leads to characters and providing Envy with a form to gather information with.

Doctor Knox
Rank: Military Doctor
First Appearence: Chapter 36
Species: Human

Doctor Knox may or may not actually be part of the military. However, he was one of the doctors brought in from Amestris to serve in the Ishbal war, so I'm putting him here. He used to have a family until after the war, at which time he was so obsessed with what happened that his wife left him. Now, he's a single man trying to forget the past while helping Mustang the best he can and serving the wounded/dead (including but not limited to a one-armed Ran Fan).

Jolio Comanche
Rank: State Alchemist
Second Name: "Silver Alchemist"
First Appearence: Chapter 43
Species: Human
Special Qualities: His alchemy focuses on creating things.

Comanche, the State Alchemist who looks like an evil penguin. (No, really, he does.) His hands and fingers are covered in complex transmutation circles that create whatever he wants to create. He loves to fight, and is especially keen to get revenge on the Ishballans that cut off his left leg. Scar has killed him now, but he was at least relatively important back during the Ishbal war.

Basque Grand
Rank: State Alchemist - Brigadier General
Second Name: "Iron-Blooded Alchemist"
First Appearence: First mentioned in chapter 6, although his moustache is drawn first in chapter 58, and he is formally introduced in chapter 60.
Species: Human
Special Qualities: His iron gauntlets are covered in alchemic runes. When he slaps them together, he uses them to alchemize rock into weapons.

Brigadier General Grand is barely given a passing mention near the beginning of the manga. Hughes just mentions that Scar killed him, and that was pretty much the end of that. However, as a Colonel back during the Ishbal war, Grand was an important soldier. Quite powerful on the battlefield, he was also not exactly the type of man to follow orders he did not wish to follow.

Fessler
Rank: Brigadier General
First Appearence: He may have appeared earlier, but the first time his name is mentioned is chapter 60.
Species: Human

Fessler was the annoying Brigadier General in charge of the annaihalation of Ishballans during the war. He was so annoying, in fact, that eventually he was killed by his own subordinates. Otherwise, he isn't very important.
