Chapter
Nine
“Something is wrong.” Vorador spoke as they exited the
Seer’s well concealed home in the canyons. The air around them crackled with
energy, strange energy.
“I think you better come back inside.” The Seer spoke from
the entrance way, frowning the vampires followed her back inside. “I thought we
had a little more time than this but it appears I was wrong.”
“Why whats happening?” Vorador snapped, making way as
Melchiah and Demitri reentered the dwelling and settled on the bed, Demitri
seemed worried but his fear was fast falling away, impressive for a creature
who moments ago was in fear for his life; he’d always been told he was good at
adapting.

“Lord the gate is gone!” Raoul spoke, the council gathered
around him as he spoke into the pitch black void. A window to the void had been
opened a short time ago when the ‘creature’ had first made contact, the window
made communication easier.
“It matters not.” The voice came from the nothingness “it
mattered nothing in the first place.”
“Then Lord why have us build it, our resources are stretched
enough as it is!” Raoul shouted then fell suddenly silent, he knew he had just
made a possibly fatal mistake, he had watched before as the last council member
to not be courteous to this ‘creature’ had had his skin melted from his bones.
Instantly he fell to his knees “forgive me lord I forget myself in your
presence it shall not occur again.”
“Little Hylden.” The voice breathed and Raoul readied
himself to feel his skin burn but nothing came “I will not tolerate this behavior
but your kind are few and I find that destroying you would be a waste, as you
say resources are stretched.” Raoul breathed a sigh of relief but it turned to
a scream quickly as the skin on his back did start to burn. The pain lasted
only for seconds but it was long enough for Raoul to learn not to raise his
voice again.
“Did you bring me the child?” The voice breathed. Raoul
nodded not yet able to form words, the sensation of nausea filled him as he
smelt his own burning flesh. A screaming baby was brought forth, the rag it was
wrapped in was blood stained, the blood still wet and fresh.
“Its mother was not agreeable.” The solider who brought
the child forth spoke, he smirked a little but it was twisted, for no Hylden enjoyed
killing another, this one had lost his mind in the dimension a long time ago to
find such joy in the murder of another of his kind.
“May . . .” Raoul spoke finding his voice at last “may we
then assume that the lady Fulvia is dead.” The solider nodded and handed the
baby to Raoul who was still on his knees. Raoul stared at the baby, Charmian
Demitri had named his child and she was beautiful, looking on her gave Raoul a
strange kind of joy, a joy that spawned from knowing his kind was once again
breeding and that they had a chance to live now. It pained him to have to
sacrifice the child. “We will cremate the mother; her loss is a great one, for
there are far too few females who can breed. She truly was a noble Lady, a true
Hylden.”
“Enough of this.” The voice from the void snapped impatient
“give me the child and I will send you and this group to Nosgoth, from there
you will open another gate.” Raoul nodded and looked to the small girl child
again
“Little one you are a savior of your race.” He said before
lifting a simple blade and slicing cleanly through the Childs throat.
The ground shook violently around them and Raoul clutched
at the dead child’s body using his own to shield it as if the baby was still
alive and able to be hurt. A sickening sensation of spinning over came him and
he heard those around him crying out in fear as they were hurtled from their
own dimension to another. The landing was rough and still Raoul cradled the
dead child. When he was certain that the transport was completely over he
looked up and his breath was stolen away from him.
Green.
There was so much green, everything was alive, in this place,
he jumped when he realized he had landed in a shallow stream. He laughed out
loud looking at the water, it was clear, clean and alive, small fish swam in
the shallow depths, the grassy banks smelt alive and full of vitality, and from
the soil sprang small flowers, delicate forms of life, thick bushes and tall
strong trees. Raoul could feel himself weeping, it was unlike he remembered, it
was better, he truly was home now.
Suddenly his breath caught in his throat when he felt
movement against his chest, slowly looking down, he felt as though his heart
would stop. For in his arms the child was looking up at his great green eyes
blinking happily at him while it gurgled away to itself.
“Sweet life.” He breathed and crushed the child to
himself.
If he had a god he would have thanked it for this miracle
but having none he simply rejoiced in the life which had returned to the child.
Nosgoth truly was a magical place, a place for miracles. Absently his mind went
back to Fulvia, the pretty young Hylden who had hardly stopped being a child
herself when she gave birth to Charmian and to her husband Demitri whose
misguided delusions had caused him also to perish. Silently in his mind Raoul
swore to himself and everything around him that this child would not suffer,
nothing would harm her, she would grow up in this wonderful place and she would
be happy and one day she would have children of her own, because Raoul would
look after her.

“What on Nosgoth was that?” Raziel snapped as the ground
beneath them slowly settled and became sill once more. He looked to Vorador for
an answer but the elder vampire was looking at the scion who was just standing
there frozen.
“I don’t understand,” he breathed “the pillars are whole
but the lock . . . the lock is broken.”
“They are through.” The Seer finished for him “the gate
they opened was open for scant moments but it was long enough for a number of
them to come trough and they will be much bettered armed to open a gate on this
side.”
“Oh.” Raziel breathed “wonderful.” He opened his mouth to
speak once more but fell silent when he realized every one was looking at
Demitri, the young Hylden was rocking slowly back and forth muttering to
himself
“He’s here, I failed, I couldn’t stop him, I’m sorry, I’m
so very sorry, he’s here now, he’s here now.”
“He really is mad.” Kain snapped “wonderful we now have a
small invasion on our hands, one mad Hylden and a completely unprepared
population of vampires.” He sighed “depressingly it’s better than what we had
before.”
“Who is he?” Melchiah asked, placing a hand on the shaking
Hylden’s shoulder, Demitri said nothing “Melchiah shook him harder. “Demitri
who is he!”
“I don’t know.” Demitri laughed, the sound desperate and
hopeless “I don’t know but I know he’s evil!”
“Evil as in vampire evil?” Kain muttered, Vorador frowned
at the scion, but not in anger rather in confusion “the interactions between
our race have been nothing but misunderstanding after misunderstanding, I am merely
wishing to know if this creature is truly ‘evil’ or if this is yet another
misunderstanding.”
“Nothing is truly evil.” Melchiah breathed, Raziel snorted
“What of that thing we found last year?” he asked
“That was an antromorphic personification.” Vorador spoke
“it wasn’t made of conflicting morals like most living things it was just one
thing, so no it was not truly evil for to be evil you need to be able to make a
choice and it had not the capacity to make a choice.”
“I’m so confused.” Raziel snapped, Vorador looked as if he
would explain but Raziel held up his hand “no don’t explain it to me! That just
makes it worse. It was an atro-thing lets just leave it at that.”
“I think we have a slightly more important problem to deal
with.” Vorador said calmly “the Hylden have just broken through.” He sighed “no doubt they will have demons
with them,” he swallowed “at least we are here though away from the others,
that is good.”
“Good?” Melchiah asked confused, still sitting with
Demitri who seemed to be calming down now.
“What about the mansion!” Raziel snapped, “We are all here
who’s protecting the mansion.”
“You underestimate your cousins.” Kain smirked, “I think
you’ll find they will be alright,” Raziel glared at his father
“You cannot possibly know that.” Raziel hissed.
While it was true that the spirit of the reaver had at one
point held no love for the children of Vorador over time he had grown fond of
them, Magnus’ had a great many amusing quirks that could keep an entire hoard
amused for several weeks. While there were others whom he had shared drinks,
nights and stories with, he would be saddened if something happened to them.
But more than that his own brothers were at that mansion now, not to mention a
great deal of younger fledglings; Zephon had for example only recently taken
under his wing a young girl from one of the human settlements. Her name was
Ileana and the fifth born of Kain’s brood had quiet simply fallen head over
heals for her, while being shy around others it was clear she loved her sire a
great deal and it would be a loss to them if something should befall her.
“Raziel.” Kain snapped bringing his eldest child's
attention back to himself “this is not a full invasion; this is a small party
of some well trained hunters.” Raziel nodded “what do you think they are
hunting.” Raziel sighed, it was clear that this band of intruders would be
coming after them
“but how would they know we were not at the mansion, the
mansion is a clear obvious vampire home, why not strike there first, we need to
go and protect it!” he was becoming most irate, Kain sighed and clenched his
fist for a moment, slowly losing patience with his eldest, there were times
when Raziel could be very stupid.
“didn’t you notice on your little stomp around Nosgoth
when the daemons broke through before that they always knew where we were!” he
snapped, the others took a few steps back, clearly seeing Kain losing his patience,
Raziel made a face, “they track us through magic Raziel its something we cannot
hide and it is loud and clear, we may as well be standing on a cliff top
screaming! Trust me they know where we are they will not attack the mansion.”
He sighed and turned away
“Kain.” Vorador frowned something was most defiantly not
right with the scion although it was understandable why. Kain grunted at the
elder vampire and absently kicked the wall, making a low noise in the back of
his throat he turned and headed towards the small entrance way. “Where the hell
do you think your going?” Vorador snapped
“I’m off to fix it AGAIN!” Kain snapped, Vorador grabbed
his arm and pulled him back, but Kain twisted out of his grip “Just leave.”
Kain snapped “this is my problem, it doesn’t concern you.”
“You big stupid . . .” Vorador shook losing the words
“this isn’t just happening to you! It’s happening to all of us, we are all affected
by this. So I think we would all appreciate it if you lost the tortured hero
attitude!” There was silence in the cave
for a few moments as everyone absorbed what Vorador had said, Melchiah
swallowed moving away from the Hylden boy and walking to his father, he said
nothing, just simply stood next to him. The scion frowned at his youngest for a
moment before sighing.
“I . . . I’m sorry.” He breathed looking at Vorador “it’s
. . . I fixed this, I gave up everything! Everything I ever had for this damn
land, my mortality, Magnus, Sebastian, my children, Raziel, you, everything I
ever cared for in this whole wasted world was sacrificed to save it and now its
all starting again.”
“maybe,” Vorador agreed “but this time we will stop it
before it gets out of hand like last time.” He absently ran a hand over the
scion’s hair a reassuring gesture. “We’ll think about this later but right now
we have demonic entities to deal with.”
“That’s easy.” Kain muttered looking at the ground “we can
take them by surprise, get outside, surround them and attack; they are not the
most intelligent of creatures they should fall easily.”
“But you said they would know where we are.” Raziel
pointed out “how would we surround them.”
“Not this close, they can sense magic, but their senses
are very strong but not very accurate, they know the area we are in but cannot
pinpoint our exact location.
“Well that’s something I suppose.” Raziel breathed “I
always knew Daemons were stupid.” Kain rolled his eyes at his child before
creeping out of the Seer’s home and moving northward up the ledge, Vorador
followed but moved southward and finally Melchiah and Raziel came out together
and stayed in the center.
“There’s a fair few of them.” Melchiah breathed, Raziel
tried to look cocky at his youngest brother, who raised an eyebrow at him.
“I’ve taken down twice that number at once.” He lied, his
voice shook ever so slightly and Melchiah laughed
“I’m sure you have brother.” He soothed, “but you are not
alone this time, I believe we just went over this with father.”
“Don’t talk about me when I can hear you its rude.” Kain
called from his vantage point a little way away, Raziel sighed
“You can always hear us though.” He breathed, a small
pebble struck him and he glared at his father
“If you don’t mind,” Vorador snapped from a little way
south of Raziel and Melchiah “I would appreciate it if you would stop
bombarding each other with pebbles and concentrate on the matter at hand.”
“He started it.” Raziel muttered, he heard his father
mutter something that sounded remarkably like ‘did not’ but stopped himself
calling back as the seriousness of their current situation made itself known,
one of the larger daemons roared in frustration sending small rocks falling.
Kain frowned at the daemon, it was insulting really that a
creature of such low inelegance and wit could be such a threat, maybe not to
himself but to those whom he had promised to protect. He sighed since when had
he become the vampire races protector, no one had asked him, they had just
assumed, he’d been resurrected to protect them. It was insane really for he had
been anything but a protector in his past life, he’d been selfish, self serving
and self centered. The only ones who had every openly received his protection
had been Melchiah and sometimes Raziel. A sound alerted him suddenly and he
turned to find Demitri right beside him.
“How did you get there?” Kain snapped, partly impressed
but partly annoyed no one could sneak up on him, yet this mere boy had managed
it, and what was worse was the fact that he had seemed to exert little if any
effort to do so.
“It is one of my few skills.” The Hylden spoke calmly “I
am able to hide in plane sight.”
“Marvelous.” Kain breathed “how many of your brothers can
do that also?”
“You expect me to answer that.” The Hylden smirked,
outside appearing completely confident but inward his stomach was performing
summersaults, this was ridiculous two days hence he was curled up with Fulvia,
wondering if he should get out of bed or remain in the warm soft embrace of his
love for a few moments more, now he was perched on a cliff almost taunting his
most feared enemy who up until a little while earlier was little more than a
legend to Demitri.
“You should have remained inside.” Kain snapped “if they
know where we are because of you I will have your head, needed or not.”
“I came to aid you vampire.” Demitri snapped trying to
sound confident but his voice was shaking, Kain looked at him as if he had
grown an extra head “I am a daemon speaker.” He breathed “I’m not the best but
I am able to control weak willed daemons.”
“And this helps because.” Kain snapped, the Hylden looked
at him as if he were considering glaring but fear was stopping him. Instead he
turned to face the daemons and the green in his eyes turned smoky and glowed
brighter. The daemons all froze in there place and seemed not to see anything.
“Well, well.” Kain breathed standing indicating to the
others it was safe to move
“You don’t need to kill them any more.” Demitri spoke
still controlling the daemons, we simply imprison them, and bring them out when
we need them, and they live with us.
“I would rather die than be imprisoned.” Raziel spoke
calmly pulling a small sword from its sheath on his hip. He disappeared
suddenly and Kain rolled his eyes watching as the daemons faded with him.
“What?” Demitri frowned
“He took them with him to the spectral realm.” Kain
breathed, “His form was restored and his powers remain, they won’t be coming
back.”
“But it’s cruel to kill them.” Demitri snapped angry at
the fact no one else seemed bothered by this, maybe vampires were monsters
after all.
“You should know what it feels like to be imprisoned.”
Vorador snapped Demitri opened his mouth but closed it; the elder vampire had a
point.
“You should return to your mansion now.” The seer spoke
from behind them “this place will be safe once you are gone, and you are needed
at the mansion.” She walked up to them “I bid you all a safe journey and do not
fear.” The ground beside her moved and every one par Demitri stepped back as a
corpse rose from the earth broken and rotten. Demitri gasped as said corpse
seemed to shake its rotten skin away revealing the clean and youthful vampiric
Raziel beneath.
“That’s vile.” Melchiah breathed
“Morbidly fascinating.” Demitri whispered, Raziel raised
an eyebrow at the Hylden youth before shrugging. The Seer smiled and little and
looked to Demitri,
“There was a task given to your family.” She breathed “the
one you loved failed in this task, you must bear it alone now.” She looked
grief stricken “I pity you, killing you own is a terrible task.” Kain snorted
at her words.
“We should return to the mansion.” Vorador snapped back
“if there are daemons here and you both speak true then Hylden are here also
and we need to talk about this.”
