Chapter
Five
“This
place,” Azimuth breathed “this place is . . . wrong.”
The sorceress
was very confused, she looked around taking in her companions; they were trying
to enter a strange looking building, Kain had claimed a ‘gate’ of some kind was
held within. Apparently the scion had known the doors would be locked and had
checked around the side as there had previously been a collapsed section of
wall which was where he had found his entry last time, but more of a collapse
had occurred and the small opening was now completely covered. Raziel and his
youngest brother stood a little way off from Kain who looked as if he were
about to tear down a wall to get in; they seemed lost in conversation. She
sighed, this place really confused her, confused her more than she would have
thought it could. It felt dead, the magic was dead, but . . . it still
functioned; it wasn’t the same as Mortanius’ death magic as that needed life to
work, for there can be no death without life. This magic was well and truly
dead, there was nothing there to keep it going and yet it still functioned, the
magic still lingered here.
Like a
fire the burned without fuel or air to power it.
“This
place is cursed.” She breathed, Raziel and Melchiah looked up at her as Kain
cursed non to quietly and kicked the door hard.
“Cursed my
lady?” Melchiah frowned at her, “this place is evil, father showed me that, but
cursed?”
“It’s not
evil Mel.” Raziel muttered swallowing loudly, remembering when he had seen the
Hylden’s tale in the cathedral, when he had heard their voices in his mind “its
not evil Mel, they were just . . . different to us.”
“Different
brother!” Melchiah snorted “they tried to poison our land, they blackened the
pillars, Raziel for the love of the land they were the reason you went through
hell and back.”
“Yes but .
. . what was done to them was an injustice and quiet rightly they wanted
revenge. The ancient vampires banished them from this land which was once
there’s as well simply because they held a different belief.” Melchiah frowned
“they didn’t believe in the wheel of fate, the cycle of death and rebirth and
they were right, the wheel is a lie. I have seen the vampires ‘wheel’ as has
father and it’s not what they thought it was.”
“Yes but
Raziel . . .” an extremely loud bang caused all three to turn to where Kain was
supposed to be trying to find a way in. Where there had once been a door now
there was a very large smoking hole and some rubble. Kain had already gone
inside.
“Ok. That
was unexpected and violent.” Melchiah breathed and moved to follow his father,
Raziel and Azimuth fell into step behind him.
“Not very
subtle.” Azimuth snapped quietly to herself as they entered a strange room
which appeared at one point to have held water and machinery, machinery which
was somehow powered by the water.
“Who’s
going to hear us?” Kain stated simply, as they caught up to him, “there is
hardly any need for subtlety.” He sighed and seemed even more frustrated than a
moment ago. The small group walked to where another elevator had once been, the
vampires leapt vertically upwards, easily making the height to the next floor,
Melchiah lifted Lady Azimuth as he seemed to be the only vampire she would
allow near her willingly. Ahead of them were more doors luckily these were
already open a hairs breadth and the vampires easily pulled them apart enough
to slip through.
“This is .
. . different.” Raziel said looking at the broken walkway ahead of them. The
building at the other end of the walkway was completely destroyed. Kain nodded
and looked slightly pleased with himself “father?”
“That was
once where they housed their gateway between the words.” Kain gestured to the
building that was now only a ruin. “when I used the
nexus stone to destroy it, the power they had used to hold the gateway open was
. . . freed for want of a better word and it’s escape destroyed the building
along with the gateway.”
“So why
did you bring us here?” Azimuth snapped “if the gateway is gone, there’s a
whole city for us to search!”
“Look,”
Kain muttered “the power here is rebuilding.” As if the vampire’s words
triggered some invisible switch the remaining torches around the building lit,
burning bright green flame, the doors behind them were no longer stationary,
they opened sharply and a quiet hum came from the building as the machinery
returned to life.
“What did
you do?” Raziel whispered, Kain glared at him
“I did
nothing.” He snapped at his eldest, half heartedly he opened his mouth to
complain why everything was always blamed on him but stopped himself realizing
just how childlike such a complaint would sound.
“You must
have done something!” Azimuth said through gritted teeth, Kain glared at her
also and once again opened his mouth to speak but stopped as if something had
suddenly caught his attention. Turning the scion began to walk towards the
ancient gateway housing building which had also begun to hum with energy and
life, a dull green glow ebbed from between the broken slabs of wall and roof
which had fallen so long ago.
“What is
it?” Raziel asked as they reached the building, Kain tilted his head, closing
his eyes as if he was trying to hear something very, very faint.
“Shh,
listen.” He snapped at his child, who now mimicked his father, closing his
eyes.
“I don’t
hear anything.” Melchiah said, but was ignored, the youngest of Kain’s brood
sighed and turned but froze suddenly, the sound was very faint but it was
defiantly there, it almost sounded like . . .
“Voices.”
Raziel breathed straightening himself, Kain nodded without opening his eyes and
continued to listen, everyone was silent, straining for the sound again.
“ . . . pushing him . . . far,” it was broken, far away and
faint but defiantly female and defiantly words
“I know
that kind of voice.” Raziel hissed quietly to himself but the female continued before
he could elaborate.
“Will take action . . . u do not .
. . will be action . . . not survive.” The voice was getting stronger now,
“Hylden.”
Raziel finished “it a Hylden woman.” Kain nodded
“It
doesn’t sound good.” Azimuth breathed, “sounds like a threat to me.” Kain shook
his head
“Listen to
her, she sounds . . . grieved.” He muttered under his breath, “She’s not threatening;
I think she’s warning someone.”
“Us?”
Melchiah asked, Kain shook his head
“If I do stop my . . . we will all pay a . .
. is not worth paying, no matter the result the cost is . . . to high.”
“It’s
getting clearer.” Azimuth smiled to herself, the little sorceress moved closer
to the ruined building
“I know the risks I am taking but
if it will keep you and Charmian safe then . . . then I am willing to face his
wrath, I faced Einos once before did I not?” the voice which spoke now was different., it was
stronger, louder, and male.
“What on
Nosgoth is he talking about?” Raziel snapped, and got a clip from his father
telling him to shut up.
“You did and if he had listened to
you he would have not treated the nexus stone so recklessly, nor would he have
ignored the fledgling vampire, if he had listened to you the scion would not
have killed him.”
The female spoke again now, calmly compared to the male voice, she obviously
was the more level headed of the two.
“They know
we’re here!” Melchiah snapped, again Kain shook his head
“No, they
have no way of knowing.” He answered sighing to himself, “this is not good
news.” He frowned “I do not think they have broken through yet, they are too
strained, too faint and they speak of taking action, I think this action might
be them coming through to our world.”
“Can we
stop them?” Raziel asked, Kain snorted
“Sounds to
me like this one wants to stop them himself.” Kain sighed “but if they do try
again, I don’t know what we could do, but we do have an advantage.”
“Demitri please I beg of you,
caution yourself, Eino trusted you, Philos does not, you must be careful or you
will end up dying for nothing” the woman’s voice was begging now, tears evident in her
voice, she was clearly upset about some form of action her male companion was
obviously about to take
“If I die it will not be for nothing.” The male snapped, he sounded
insulted “it will be to keep us safe. We
will still be here but we will be safe” Kain sighed loudly after those
words
“Something
tells me that we have something much more complex than simply the Hylden to
worry about.” The scion breathed
* * *
“I do not
understand.” Janos breathed “why would a Hylden want to help us?”
“I do not
think he is intentionally trying to help us.” Kain sighed, they had been going
over this since they had returned three and a half hours ago and the scion was
getting sick of having to explain facts to people who wouldn’t listen. “It
sounded like he was trying to protect something else, something he seemed to
care about.”
“It didn’t
sound like the female had much faith in him being listened to though.” Vorador
muttered, he had been briefed as soon as they arrived home and unlike his sire
he seemed to be listening.
“She
didn’t” Lady Azimuth breathed, she had returned with the vampires and now
exhaustion was taking its toll on the human. The vampires didn’t look much
better though, slumped about the table, yawning constantly. “Honestly she sounded like she expected him
to be killed for this . . . transgression.”
“So you
think they will come through.” Janos nodded to the mortal dimension guardian
“Well I
think Kain is right, they are not our major worry, but rather the voices hinted
at something greater. They spoke of being trapped being better than the price
they will pay. I think we need to look into this idea of ‘price’.”
“Kain what
do you . . .” Vorador stopped looking at the scion who had buried his head in
his arms folded on the table “Kain?” no answer “Kain!” Vorador snapped, the
scion jolted and looked to his brother, his expression clearly quiet fed up. “What
are you thinking about?” Vorador asked a bit softer
“Do you
realize that it hasn’t even been a year, a single bloody year.” Kain sighed,
head in hands “we didn’t even get a whole year. Without the possibility of war.”
“I thought
you liked war?” Vorador smirked, Kain made a face
“I like
being in charge, in control and if there’s a way to keep control without war
then . . . wonderful, but most of the
time force is the only way, I accept that and yes a long time ago I did enjoy
the idea but I was a lot younger then. Now I’m irritated that we didn’t even
get a single bloody year since the incident at Avernus.”
“I think .
. . I think I’m going to go.” Raziel sighed, he’d had enough, he didn’t want to plan for war. He remembered long ago in
the early years of Kain’s empire when he had enjoyed planning for war, when it
had been exciting, a chance to show off, to prove he was the most capable and
strong of his brothers, most disserving of his place at his fathers side. But
now the thought of war meant separation, destruction and death; he was starting
to realize how the humans must have felt in those early years of empire.
His
request to go was met with nods and a somewhat muffled sound from his father
who was still leaning heavily on the table. Leaving the room he stopped a little
down the corridor to think, but after a few moments he was interrupted.
“You look
like you could use a serious drink.” Rahab nudged his brother; Raziel offered
him a thin smile and nodded wearily at his younger brother’s offer of some
company and a drink.
The two
walked in silence together towards one of the more secluded libraries where
Kain’s brood often congregated away from those of Vorador’s line. Raziel smiled
a little, they couldn’t really call themselves separate line now, now that it
was common knowledge that Vorador and Kain were brothers. His smile grew
remembering one night before Kain had returned to Nosgoth, Vorador and himself
had been trying to convince Melchiah of his worth. Melchiah had often had
questions about his own worth, in the time of Kain’s empire he would sometimes
lock himself away in his clan holding for decades at a time, and more often
than not it took a visit from his father or some of his brothers to snap him
out of it. These little ‘moods’ had been less since balance had been restored
but still happened from time to time and Melchiah had employed his oldest
argument that he was the youngest of the brood and therefore the weakest.
Raziel would never forget what Vorador had replied.
“being the youngest means nothing.”
Vorador had snapped “many of my younger fledglings are stronger and more
‘useful’ than their elders” Melchiah had grunted something unintelligible at
this, Vorador had sighed before smirking “your father was the youngest,”
Melchiah’s head snapped up “he was my younger brother.” Vorador snorted “there
were only two of us admittedly but he was the younger,” he pretended to look
shifty “between us I don’t know if I could have taken your father down.” He
paused “I doubt it, but keep that quiet.” Melchiah had laughed quietly at the
ancient vampire’s obvious attempt to cheer him up and had nodded.
“Raziel?”
Rahab’s voice brought him out of his daydream and the reaver spirit “Nosgoth to Raziel?”
“what?”
Raziel muttered embarrassed to have been caught daydreaming, Rahab gestured to
the room and opened the door showing the rest of his brothers around a table,
bottles of blood and alcohol spread out, each held cards and chips. Raziel
sighed it had been to long since he had been with his brothers.
* * *
His father
was sleeping by the time Raziel made it back. The sun was high in the sky by
now as morning turned to afternoon. The spirit of the reaver shook his head as
he entered the room, what if the Hylden really did make it back into this
world, it would mean another war, it would mean anarchy and panic; the mansion
would no longer be safe, they would all be spilt up, he and his brothers would
no doubt be separated, he and his father would be separated. It was childish to
be so upset by the possibility but Raziel believed they had been separate for
far to long already and he didn’t care how pathetic he
looked complaining about it.
But
no, he should not think about it now, of all times.
Raziel
took a deep breath, and moved to the bed, clothing dropping on the way, before
climbing in next to his father. Technically he had his own room, with his own
bed but even simply sleeping he preferred to be here, he’d tried sleeping on
his own just to see if he could do it but he’d tossed and turned and had ended
up creeping back in here towards dusk. He sighed, he was like a child unable to
even sleep unless with his parent, it was pathetic, he’d become clingy; Raziel
shivered at the thought, he was supposed to be one of the most threatening
creatures in this world, he had a feeling his reputation would plummet if the
world found out he couldn’t sleep unless in his father’s bed. He’d mentioned it
subtly to Kain who had smirked as if pleased with himself
that he’d made his eldest completely dependent on him; Raziel had cursed at
him, accusing him of doing it purposely.
Absently
he thought of ‘accidentally’ waking him but decided against it, he’d been
drained enough when they got back. He was about to argue with himself when the
weight behind him turned and arms wrapped around him from behind and a closed
mouth moved over his throat and warmth spread through him.
Suddenly
Raziel was hit with an epiphany.
“HA!”
he snapped sitting up, causing the covers to fall, showing his father smirking
sleepily up at him, “you can’t do it either!” Kain frowned and grumbled
something “you can’t sleep unless I’m here!” Raziel did a small victory jig
sitting on the mattress, his father snorted
“You
woke me when you ‘quietly’ slammed the door. I have in fact been sleeping for
the last four hours.” He stretched ‘accidentally’ causing the bed sheets to
fall further, Raziel frowned
“Liar!”
Raziel growled desperately “you’re just as pathetic as me!” Kain shook his head
and raised himself up on his elbows, lifting his eyebrows suggestively, Raziel
frowned “no don’t try distractions it’s not going to work, not until you admit
that you’re just as pathetic and clingy as me.” Kain frowned at his child; it
did not happen often but sometimes he could swear Raziel went back in time to
the time when his mind was about eight years old.
“If
I let you have your way,” he sighed “will you put your mouth to a better use
than complaining?” Raziel glared at his father for a moment before nodding,
“fine I’m just as pathetic as . . .”
“Pathetic
and clingy!” Raziel corrected, Kain sighed loudly
“I’m
just as pathetic and clingy as you.” He said robotically, “Are you happy now.”
Raziel smiled, and placed a chaste kiss on Kain’s throat.
He moved upwards, feathering small, soft kisses on Kain’s jaw, and further up,
on the side of his mouth. His father’s legs were shifting under him, spreading
to grip at his hips, holding him. His own hands had moved to cup his father’s face,
letting his elbows support the bulk of his weight. Long, clawed fingers traced down,
fingers grazing his collarbone, circling a nipple, pushing what remained of the
bed sheets out of the way so that he could clutch at his hipbone. Kain’s
stomach twitched as claws grazed it, his arms wrapping around his child’s lower
back claws scraping over skin, as his child’s mouth followed his hand in the
exploration downward, Kain sighed and moved to nuzzle at his child’s throat;
his breath caught when Raziel’s hand closed around him and moved slowly,
teasing.
“Evil
child.” He breathed; Raziel smirked and looked up at him letting the pad of one
thumb run along the underside of his father’s shaft while simultaneously
leaning down to bite at a nipple.
The effect was electric. Kain groaned, a guttural sound rising from somewhere
in the back of his throat, hips jerking forward, almost toppling his child
while claws broke the skin on Raziel’s back. After a second or two Kain relaxed
again the tension easing from his frame and his claws released their hold.
Raziel once again smirked; quiet proud that his actions could have such a
powerful effect on his father. Leaning down again he moved lower and couldn’t
help widening his smirk when a particularly violent shiver wracked his father
when he kissed his way down his death scar and onto his abdomen.
Kain
couldn’t help but shiver when his child’s mouth ran over his scar, the skin was
thinner there, sensitive, it annoyed him that he reacted so to having such a
simple caress over it, but his mind was moving on as Raziel bent further down,
caressing the side of one porcelain thigh with a rough, calloused hand and took
him in his mouth.
"Raziel,"
he managed before his vocal cords gave out, and he arched backwards into the
bed, his hips bucking to feel the swirl of that hot, talented tongue laving
over him, tasting him. Gods be damned his child was good at this; already he
could feel a tension that wasn’t his body but his magic. This weakness annoyed
him no end but had the opposite effect of pleasing his child, nothing else on
Nosgoth or in any dimension he’d encountered could make him lose control the
way his child’s tongue touching the most sensitive part of his body could. His
claws which had released his child some time ago now ripped through the bed
sheets, Vorador would be miffed again. But at this moment he didn’t particularly
care, nothing else mattered, not Vorador’s inevitable moan, not the Hylden, not
the inevitable fighting that would surely come nothing else mattered.
A
violent tremor passed through him and he knew suddenly that if they were going
to be doing anything a little more vigorous later then this had to stop now,
the tightness building in him both physically and magically was excruciating. He
had to regain control of the situation before he . . . before . . .
“Ra
. . .” he managed the rest of the word lost in a choked sob, his vocal cords
betraying him. Surely his arms would still work, Kain growled, and lifted his
hands from the bedding to his child’s shoulders in a effort to push him away
but Raziel drew back hard then and Kain dug his hands to hard into Raziel’s
shoulders, long claws tearing through skin. Raziel growled against his father,
muscles tensing, hands grabbing his father’s hips so hard he knew they would
bruise, and took him further inside his mouth, swallowing him whole. The sound
Kain made as he climaxed, feeling Raziel’s throat constrict around his shaft,
swallowing reflexively, was drowned out completely by the shattering of glass
as the windows fell out of there frames and landed on the courtyard. But still
it was a sound Raziel knew well and he couldn’t help but smirk proudly as he
heard it.
“Vorador’s
gonna be pissed.” Raziel muttered widely absently licking his lips “he really
should stop replacing them, should just board them up, you never open you
curtains anyway.” He couldn’t help but laugh before stretching out next to his
father and waiting, trying desperately to ignore his own needs..
“You
. . . . Little shit!” Kain snapped after a moment, his chest still heaving
despite lacking the need for air. “You never listen.” Raziel leaned up, resting
his head on his fathers chest, listening for the sound of a heart beat despite
knowing there would not be one and it was his fault for that.
“Technically
all you said was Ra . . . and that’s not really a word. But if you . . .” he
was cut off when his father rolled them and glared down at his child. Raziel
swallowed and mentally cursed, knowing he was about to experience payback in
spades, Kain had the novel talent of being able to bring him right to the edge
of insanity and hold him there for as long as he bloody well pleased, only
letting him fall when he wanted him to. But it was a pleasant torture and one
he would gladly endure.
