Chapter Eight

“Wake up Demi.” a soft voice called, after a sleepy moment Demitri recognized Fulvia, Demitri groaned and rolled over onto to have gentle hands ghost over his head-crest, he purred quietly as they found a grip and suddenly pull hard.

“Aarrr,” is the eloquent response he managed, before rolling over to look at his young wife lying beside him, half hidden under the thin material used in place of a sheet. “You are pure evil,” he growled quietly, Fulvia laughed. Demitri continued to look at her but his expression softened, she was the third dimension born Hylden a few years younger than Demitri, she seemed to understand him in a way that no other could, most likely because she shared his perspective of never seeing their original home. She was soft and strong, kind and forgiving.

“If I am evil then you must be the devil himself.” Fulvia huffed poking him in the chest, her thin claws gently catching the skin, careful not to break it, Demitri said nothing but gave her a look that made her pale “oh no you don’t!” she snapped “Chariman’s asleep, you’ll wake her Demit . . .” she was cut off when her husband grabbed her wrists and rolled them both, pinning her beneath him, she struggled briefly but gave up quickly and glared up at him.

“Ha!” Demitri snapped “that’ll teach you to wake me; I was having a rather pleasant dream.”

“But what could be more pleasant than me.” Fulvia batted her eyes at Demitri, trying to look innocent while she moved her legs, a trick she had used many times. She tilted her head up to her husband who leaned down, pressing there mouths together in a chaste kiss only to find a sudden pressure on his hips. He yelped as Fulvia managed to use his distraction to roll them again.

“You were saying something about teaching me?” she smirked, Demitri held up his hands in defeat, he knew better than to challenge his love to such a battle, she always held the upper hand. However as she leaned down for another kiss a strange cry from Chariman’s small battered crib made him turn,

“Demitri!” a deep male voice snapped, he looked to his wife who was still smiling down at him, again that strange noise came from his child, but as he tried to sit up Fulvia collapsed on top of him, she was soaking wet. Demitri rolled from under her as she had now become a dead weight. When he looked back to her he gasped, she was covered in her own blood, a huge gaping wound in her side.

“Charmian!” Fulvia gasped as blood welled up in her mouth; she coughed weakly “he took her! He took my baby, he . . .” the life went out of her in one long rattling breath and the light in her eyes dimmed. As Demitri felt tears on his cheeks the same growling cry came from his child’s crib, crawling over to it he felt fear twist in his gut, there was nothing in her crib but the cloth Fulvia had so carefully sown was shredded. A kick suddenly sent him sprawling, he turned to look up to see an unfamiliar woman.

The woman was Hylden through and through but she was different to any other, she was whole, her skin flushed and healthy, her weight normal, her stomach was not concave like so many others, Demitri couldn’t see her bones through her skin, she looked alive and healthy in a way he had never seen one of his race.

“Demitri, Father.” the voice in which she spoke was strange, it was clearly a woman’s voice but there was something far to masculine about it. A deep undertone. “Thank you father, Demitri for this form I will use her well.”

“Wake up.” Demitri span as he heard Fulvia behind him, her eyes remained dead as was her body but her mouth still moved, “Wake up.” She said again, Demitri closed his eyes blocking out the image of his dead wife, he felt her touch him and heard himself scream.

“Wake up,” a new voice snapped, the voice was soft and female but it was not Fulvia.

His eyes snapped open.

“Are you feeling better now young one?” the strange woman who called herself Seer asked as Demitri fought hard to shake off the last visage of his dream. He looked at her and was reminded of his dream, she had Hylden attributes this one, but she was healthy, her stomach ever so slightly rounded, her skin a flushed colour, but she was not the woman in his dreams for while she had Hylden attributes she also had attributes of a vampire. Her head crest was not fully formed, only rising from her ears, her teeth were sharp little fangs and the smell of blood lust rose around her.

“I,” he tried to speak finding his throat dry; he accepted the cup she offered him, sipping for the first time in his life, clean water. It tasted strange to him and he made a small wince at the strangeness. “I am grateful to you lady.” He managed after a few mouthfuls of the strange tasting water.

“Do not trouble yourself,” she smiled “it has been to long since I saw one of your kind, I have missed you.” She seemed somewhat melancholy at this but she let it drop quickly “unfortunately you are a Hylden in Nosgoth and not all will treat you as I have, however,” she paused

“I know my situation lady.” He interrupted as she paused “it is unfortunate but . . . while I did not intend to end up in this place I cannot truly regret such an action, this place is beautiful.” She laughed at his words

“This land is desolate, the canyons always have been. If you are pleased by them then I would like to be the one to show you the forests and planes.” She swallowed “but before we get to such small joys we have business to under go.”

“My lady?” he asked confused, she kept continually falling silent as if she had bed news for him but wished not to tell him.

“I have called some people.” She smiled, but it was strained, “they will be here soon.” Demitri frowned at her “I’d prefer not to tell you the exact identity of those I have called but you need not fear, for those I have called owe me a favor, they will not harm you.” She swallowed “at least not while you are here.” Demitri frowned taking this in, she feared those she had called would do him harm, but had felt the need to call them anyway, it took only a moment before e realized who she had called.

“You called vampires!” Demitri yelped, panicking he scrambled backwards

“I told you not to panic.” The woman sighed, Demitri glanced frantically around the dwelling he was now in, looking desperately for a way out but could see none. “it is not as bad as you fear, for I have requested Melchiah join the group and it is well known that Melchiah is like water on his fathers fire.” At Demitri’s frown she elaborated “he calms Kain down, keeps him balanced.” She seemed to find that last statement amusing.

Demitri swallowed loudly as fear slowly started to overcome him. Vampires knew he was here, they were coming for him, and this woman had called the vampires down onto his head. He looked to her and suddenly in his eyes her Hylden attributes seemed to fade and she was completely vampire to him, he shivered and a low sound of fear escaped him. He had no way to defend himself against such creatures, his magic was never that strong at the best of times and away from his home, he doubted he’d be able to do anything. These creatures would come here for him, with all their magic’s, would they kill him with the fire that Raoul said they could summon from their mouths, or would he fall to some other hideous magic. His fear doubled when he realized the woman had said ‘Kain’ that was the one who had killed Eino! Demitri felt his throat closing of its own violation as he tried to remember the stories Raoul had told, about how this one could move the very sky.

“Calm down little fool,” the woman snapped at him seeing him start to hyperventilate “I have told them they cannot harm you while you are here, you will not be hurt.” She looked to the door and seemed preoccupied but slowly a stressed smile appeared “they are nearly here.”

“Oh god, oh god, oh god, oh god,” Demitri chanted slowly under his breath “I am going to die,”

“You’re not going to die,” she sighed loudly and Demitri fancied he could see small sparks of flame between her lips, “do you not understand, you are under my protection.”

“But Kain eats worlds!” Demitri snapped opening his mouth to continue, but he received a hard slap and stopped dead.

“He does not eat worlds, what rubbish have your people been feeding you, he’s a stupid, spoilt, selfish brat! But he most defiantly does not eat worlds.” She lost her anger suddenly “although it may amuse him to hear you say so.”

“Hear him say what?” a young male voice asked, the Seer smiled and turned

“Welcome Raziel,” she looked genuinely pleased to see him and Demitri braved a glance at the new comer, she had called him Raziel . . . Raziel was supposed to be the name of . . . . Of the fallen Hylden hero who died at Kain’s hands. What in the dimensions was such a martyr doing here. Demitri gasped suddenly when he suddenly realized something was a little off about his supposed savior, he was . . . . Vampiric. Raziel was a vampire!?!

“It is a pleasure to see you again,” Raziel dipped his head “you are as beautiful as I remember, Seer.”

“And you’re as smooth tongued.” The Seer smirked but her face colored at the vampire’s remark, Demitri continued to frown this was Raziel the fallen Hylden savior, who now appeared to be vampiric but he didn’t appear to be a true vampire: Vampires were to Demitri’s knowledge great creatures that towered above all others in height and ruthlessness. But Raziel seemed to be no taller than this Seer who had saved him and he was acting . . . like a child in his teens. Something was not right with this.

“He has not changed since his fledgling year’s mistress.” A second voice called from a very small entrance way and Demitri watched from a distance as another two entered, the one who had spoken had a young boyish look to him and despite having several thick scars that Demitri could see he had a certain innocence to him that the others lacked.

The one who followed him Demitri recognized from legends, Vorador the maker of their weapon of destruction, the weapon that Eino had taken from Kain when he had cast the vampire from him in fire. Eino was a great warrior and was all but worshiped in Hylden society for doing what no other could have done. But this was wrong as well, for while Vorador was taller than the others he was not a great towering beast. He appeared refined, in his elegant clothing, and his eyes spoke of civilization; he was no raving monster.

“I have!” Raziel seemed indignant at the remark from the other nameless vampire, Vorador sighed watching as the two started bickering. Demitri watched on confused, they were arguing like children, before this moment children was never a word he would have thought of in conjuncture with the vampire monsters.

“Am I not allowed inside then?” a very muffled voice asked, Demitri frowned as the speaker was someone he could not see, Vorador smiled and made a dramatic show of thinking but his display was cut short as he was pushed suddenly and the entrance way which he had been blocking was now empty and another entered.

“You live in one of the most secluded places Lady.” Kain smirked as he entered.

“It is a pleasure to see you again also pebble.” The Seer greeted the scion, who nodded in agreement,

“Pebble?” Raziel snorted, and received a clip on the back of the head from the newcomer

“What of it.” He snapped, Demitri almost felt a terrified laugh escape him, for while his entire body shook with fear this was not what he had expected. “You don’t honestly think I came up with all my metaphors myself?” the newcomer smirked widely “I’d have to have been thinking of them from time before I was born.”

“That’s true.” Vorador muttered the newcomer glared at him Vorador shrugged “you do tend to steer towards metaphor a little strongly at times, half the time even I have trouble knowing what it is you are speaking of. Trees, rivers, rocks, streams some one who did not know you would think you an enthusiastic gardener.” Hearing Vorador speak only confused Demitri more, the image of refinement was only secured more strongly, the image of the raving beast was fading quickly and this made Demitri’s head spin; it had to be a trick. Vampires were great lairs.

“So where is he?” Raziel asked, he was now showing some signs of nervousness, the Lady called Seer smiled

“If you’re through bickering,” the Seer smirked “he’s hiding in that corner over there.” She pointed to Demitri; Demitri felt all the blood rush from his head as all eyes fell on him. For a long moment all just stared at each other before the newcomer took a step forwards only to have Vorador clamp a hand on his shoulder

“Kain don’t!” he snapped “the creature is . . . . petrified.” He seemed confused by Demitri’s fear

“We can’t just stand here all day,” Kain snapped right back and shock Vorador’s hand off his shoulder and continued forward. Demitri to terrified to move simply watched as the new vampire stopped a little way away from him and looked confused before holding out a hand. “hello.” He said lamely before sighing, Demitri tensed himself ready to feel flames licking at his skin, but nothing happened and he opened his eyes again “look I’m not going to eat you.” Demitri blinked and at that moment it clicked in his mind who he was ‘talking’ to.

Demitri frowned, his heart racing and his head spinning, something was very wrong, there had to be some trick, some trick of the mind and eyes. For he knew the one in front of him now as Kain, the others had addressed him as such and he partly fit the description Raoul had given, the hair was the same, but that was all. Everything else was wrong, he looked human, there were obvious things that marked him out as vampire, his ears were tipped, his hands were clawed but he was smaller than Vorador and seemed like a fledgling. Kain was supposed to be the destroyer of worlds, a great monstrous creature and here he stood holding out a hand that seemed all too human. It was all too much for the Hylden boy and he hit the ground unconscious once again.

“You killed him!” Melchiah snapped, Kain span on his heal hands held up in a gesture of innocence

“I did nothing!” he snapped “he . . . he fainted.” He looked at Vorador who had slowly approached “I do not believe one of his kind has ever feinted before me; not the most imposing of his breatherin is he?”

They took a moment to look at this fallen creature. It was thin, starvation thing, its feet were reminiscent of a woman’s high heals, thin and delicate to the touch, it was surprising that the Hylden could move as fast as they could with such strange feet. The hands were like all Hylden’s long and sharply clawed, his face was gaunt, lips drawn back so his teeth were on display in his fallen state; they were sharp but not individual, instead of many separate teeth it was one edge all joined and serrated. His head-crest was thin and seemed to break at the slightest touch, it was covered in healed scars and some scabs. But this one didn’t look like a fighter; it seemed it was so delicate that day to day activities could break the thin skin.

Kain muttered a profanity as the Seer came forward and went to lift the fallen boy. Vorador stopped her and lifted him, moving him to where the Seer pointed. She smiled a him

“I never expected you to help.” She breathed Vorador frowned “they killed your creators species.” She reminded him, Vorador snorted

“They killed themselves.” He breathed, Raziel snorted

“literally.” He muttered receiving a glare from Vorador “sorry.” He apologized, Vorador dropped his glare, he knew that the knowledge of the ancients starting the war had hit Raziel badly. He had deified the ancients in his mind and to see them with faults had hurt him. Meeting the original circle guardians hadn’t helped Raziel’s opinion of the ancient vampires any; in fact the only ancient Raziel would now tolerate was Janos. Vorador however had known them personally and knew that they were just people, they were not gods, they were capable of mistakes and that’s what had started the war, the ancient vampire’s ability to make mistakes.

“I do not blame the Hylden for what happened.” Vorador spoke softly “it takes more than one side to start a fight; the ancient vampires brought their fate on themselves when they started this war.”

“I think perhaps a change in subject matter.” The Seer huffed “this poor wretch is terrified enough as it is, he doesn’t need to wake up to a room full of vampires discussing war.”

“Whats his name?” Melchiah asked, looking down at the Hylden. He didn’t look that threatening, in fact he looked small and lost in Melchiah’s eyes. He was so thin he looked as if he would break at the slightest touch.

“I think he is Demitri.” The Seer smiled running her finger tips across the young Hylden’s head crest

“Demitri?” Kain’s eyebrows raised, he snorted looking at the tiny creature, Raziel frowned at his father “Demitri was the name we heard in the Hylden city.”  He sighed “Demitri was the one who was supposed to be trying to stop the break through.”

“Maybe there’s more than one Demitri.” Raziel shrugged, Kain looked at him

“It may well be possible that there is more than one, but what are the chances of us hearing a conversation concerning a Hylden named Demitri preventing the others breaking through and then a completely different Demitri showing up here.” Kain sighed

“You stopped them before without aid, I’m sure you can do it again.” Melchiah pressed seeing the expression on his father’s face fall. Kain turned to him and smiled, but it was a forced smile.

“Blind faith.” He breathed, and then laughed quietly “you realize you don’t need to tell people you used to be a religious warrior.” Melchiah frowned

“Whats that supposed to mean!” he snapped forgetting himself

“Relax child.” Kain continued to chuckle quietly “it was merely a reference to your zealous belief in something you have never seen and have no proof of. You simply believe because it is in your nature to.” Melchiah frowned and pointed outside, Kain raised an eyebrow

“Proof, the lands not dead, that’s proof enough.” He huffed, Kain just shrugged. Raziel noticing that the Hylden on the ‘bed’ was stirring spoke up but before words could escape he was cut off.

“PLEASE DON’T BREATH FIRE ON ME!!!!!”

Everyone blinked.

* * *

“You’re mental.” Melchiah finished after listening to Demitri rant. “Completely and utterly mental.”

The young Hylden had finally found his voice and realizing he wasn’t about to be brutally murdered he had started to speak about what had occurred to him in his own dimension along with some of the stories Raoul had told; the vampires reaction had been unexpected. They had laughed at parts of his tales and had at other been stunned into silence. At long last the young one called Melchiah had spoken and had accused him of madness.

“I wish we could breathe fire.” Raziel sighed “it would be amusing if nothing else.” Kain held out his hand palm up and a small ball of flame ignited between his fingers. Demitri coward back and Raziel sighed “there are times when I really do hate you.” He breathed but he smiled as he said it, watching as his father rolled the small ball of flame around his fingers.

This trick was actually the same power Kain had gained when he had absorbed Magnus’ soul; immolate however this was a much more controlled version, a much, much more controlled version. Demitri swallowed heavily, remembering Raoul’s story of Eino’s death, the noble and brave warrior hadn’t stood a chance as the monstrous vampire had driven him to exhaustion before setting him alight, Eino had been able to shake the flame magic off a few times but after a third attack he had fallen.

“I gained this from a friend of mine.” Kain spoke to the young Hylden, “your Eino had him imprisoned,” he sighed “he had lost his mind when I found him,”

“He . . .” Demitri swallowed wetting his throat “he must have been savage for Eino to imprison him. Eino was always fair minded and never cruel.” Kain sighed loudly at these words, remembering the ‘Serefan Lords’ brutality, his wish to see both humans and vampires destroyed but also his little speech at the end, shortly before his death, he had almost sounded reasonable and of course his little discussion with Janos, that short and brutal argument had made Kain think, justice and revenge, who was to say what was right any more.

“I believe.” Kain said after a moment “that there have been a great many misunderstandings between us, your race and mine. I would not have any more.”

Vorador raised his eye brows at this, he had half expected Kain to snap at the young Hylden for insinuating Magnus was a savage but he had been calm and thoughtful. Vorador sighed he often forgot just how old Kain really was now; it was easy to forget considering the fact he looked like a newborn Vorador knew Kain now to be over several millennia in age, perhaps even older, when time travel came into the game who was to say how old he was anymore, he could be older than Janos, but Vorador doubted it. Although at times like this the scion did truly show just how old he was.

“I think you should take him back with you.” The Seer said firmly, Vorador looked about to protest but the look the lady gave him was enough to silence him.

The expression in her eyes spoke volumes, she had seen this, and she knew this was to happen. The elder vampire sighed heavily, he trusted this woman and knew her sight and voice to always be true, if she said they needed to take this quivering Hylden boy with them then he would; but it wasn’t going to be easy. He dreaded to think what the ancient vampire’s reaction would be. But then he looked to the boy, Demitri, Melchiah was speaking quietly with him now and seemed to have taken a shine to the terrified young one, so by gaining the favor of the young vampire the Hylden had almost by accident gained the protection of the scion, so he was as safe as any of them were, for now.

“This.” Raziel said speaking for the first time in a while “is completely insane. Madness!” he swallowed “the ancients, they’ll rip him apart.” At these words the Hylden shivered and unconsciously moved closer to Melchiah

“I don’t think so.” Vorador smirked at Kain who for a moment looked confused before sighing, it was clear he understood Vorador’s assumption. Demitri coughed quietly to attract attention.

“I would not wish to be a bother.” He spoke calmly, measuring his words before he spoke “but there is much I believe I must tell you. I think I have managed to postpone the breakthrough for now but this ‘creature’ aiding us will find a way.” He swallowed loudly, nervously “I fear it greatly.”

“Then we shall return to the Mansion.” Vorador spoke, his own nervousness seemed to be coming back “I dare say word of your arrival has spread by now, but I will send forth word to have rooms prepared for you.” Raziel sighed as they started to leave muttering something to himself about his dislike of teleportation spells, his father nudged him

“We could always fly.” He smiled and it was not pleasant, Raziel shivered remembering the last time he had allowed his father to fly him to the pillars, Kain’s bat form was chaotic and his father’s control of the form was limited and his flight displays dangerous to both the body and the stomach. Raziel shook his head and darted out after Melchiah who was helping the Hylden boy to stand and walk. Kain followed them but stopped before the exit.

“You knew this didn’t you.” Kain spoke without turning, the Seer smiled

“Yes pebble I knew, you think it was an accident I asked for you to bring Melchiah, he is said to cool your temper often; but that aside I knew Demitri would bond with him quickly and strongly and by gaining his protection he would inadvertently gain yours.” She laughed a little “he’s been here a day and already has a made a body guard of his most feared enemy,”

“Why Lady, why would you set this up?” Kain did turn now, he was frowning accusingly, and the Seer lost her humor; she knew exactly how much Kain detested being used and she had used him but not personally she was just making sure tat history was pressed into taking its proper course. Unfortunately she knew he would not see it like that.

“His life is like yours scion.” She breathed “tragic, born for a reason he does not understand, given a responsibility he will not want, but his life differs in two ways, yours has spanned over several millennia, his will not and death will release him from his obligation whereas for you death is but a momentary reprieve.” She looked up at the young appearing yet old vampire pleadingly “like you we will be lost if he dies before his time.”

She watched the scion and felt relief, the Scion was a fiercely proud man, and viciously protective of all that was his, he saw the land as his and had done all in his power to restore it back to its former glory and he had succeeded. The Seer was a clever woman and by making him see Demitri as his she knew she would trigger his innate protectiveness.

“There are times.” Kain spoke slowly as if tired “when I truly begin to dislike Fate.”
