Pools
{Rahab}
The water
was murky.
He could
remember the days when the water had been clear and cool. He had been able to
see right to the bottom, there had been fish and small fresh water shell fish
crawling along the sandy bottom. But now the water was dark and suspicious, the
murk hiding things even from his eyes; his eyes that had developed to be able
to see miles when under water. Although the waters murky nature did help him
now. He could venture out from the shadows during the day, if he stayed deep
enough he could go anywhere the rivers went. He had a freedom that some lacked,
those of Melchiah’s clan lacked this freedom.
He now
thought he understood Melchiah more than he ever had before. He had once joked
with Dumah about Melchiah’s weakness to the light, how fledgling like it was,
and how ridiculous that Kain favoured him almost as much as Raziel. But now
suffering from his own weakness to light, he thought that he understood, this weakness did not make him useless. His inability to
come onto the land however was the one weakness that really bothered him.
He almost
wished he had not evolved further than his children. They who still had the
ability to walk on the sand, through the abbey, into the rooms. He missed his
bed; his missed his library, his home. But moping was pointless now, now of all
times moping was a great waste of time. He knew what was coming, he had been warned,
for his father had told him years ago what was to befall him. He remembered
that day with disturbing clarity; he remembered his surprise at feeling his
father’s aura and believing himself to be mistaken, until he had ventured to
the surface to see Kain leap an incredible distance over the abbeys rooftop and
down to one of the platforms only inches over the water.
Kain had
turned to face him and they had simply stared at each other for the longest
moment before the master of Nosgoth had nodded once and Rahab had turned to
lead him into a sheltered area where they could both speak comfortably. It had
to Rahab’s memory been one of the strangest conversations he had ever had with
his father. Kain had seemed constantly distracted, spinning at every little
sound and snarling at every fledgling stupid enough to come close enough to get
a look at the almost legendary master of Nosgoth.
But Rahab
had under stood the words spoken even if they were somewhat strange. It had
taken him a while to believe what was said but he found no reason for his father
to lie about such a thing. So now he had the opportunity to affect his own
death, he could choose how he was going to die, manipulate his older brother
into fulfilling his own wants. He looked around the room with its windows and
platforms. Soon the windows would break and the light would flood the chamber.
He had
always wanted to truly see the sun one last time before he died.
