Authoress note: This is a rewrite of the
original, mainly due to the huge writer’s block I hit after I had finally
managed to churn out the first chapter. I have been constantly re-reading this
and finally decided the only way it was going to go anywhere was if I scrapped
it and started again.
After such an overwhelming response from all of my reviewers about
‘Slaughter’ I could hardly say no when nearly every single one asked for a
sequel.
No matter how much of fight it puts up.
Chapter Three
Fractured Dreams
You may
have uncovered your past but you know nothing of it
Kain: Soul
Reaver
The
Canyons outside Meridian were much larger than the young fledgling remembered; the
cliff tops loamed miles above him, seeming to be bearing down, and the walls
seemed to become closer and closer the further he went, slowly closing in on
him. He also did not remember them being so dangerous either. But that probably
had to do with the fact that last time he traversed these canyons he was with
his father and the strange creatures that stalked this place seemed to be
terrified of the master vampire; however of a lone fledgling they were most
defiantly not afraid. Several times his speed alone had saved him, he had
fought these creatures when he had first entered but soon found himself
exhausted so now he simply ran. Despite being ferocious these creatures were a
lot slower than he was, Raziel thanked what ever deities existed that he was
not a mortal for if he had been he would be dead by now.
The
dusk was as usual hot, but there was a difference this time, the air seemed
alive with some thickness that Raziel had felt before only once, and he
remembered what it signified, the rains would fall soon. He would need to find
somewhere solid and safe before the rains fell, the hiding place he had found
this morning would most defiantly not be of use, for it was a simple hollow in
the rocks, dark but it would not remain dry when the rains came. He muttered thanks
that his father had taken the time when they were wandering in the north to
teach him what made a good safe hiding place and what did not. Old houses and
basements were ideal but Raziel doubted his ability to get to a town in time to
avoid the rains, not only that but a town would discover him for he would have
to feed. According to Kain vampires could go for a while without food but young
vampires could not and Raziel was still young, he would need to eat once or
twice a night at this age and only when he passed the century mark would he be
able to survive on limited feedings.
Another
problem with trying to find shelter was the fact that he was not the only
creature who was looking for shelter from the soon to be coming rains, a lot of
crevasses held the strange spider-like monsters that would send him running. It
was becoming hopeless and he was getting hungry, but he remembered passing some
kind of factory out here when Kain had taken him north; if he could get there
he could rest and then when he was stronger he could hunt one of those spider
creatures, he had killed one this evening before he had exhausted himself and
had had to run every time one approached. The only problem with this plan was
that he was completely lost.
A
scent suddenly caught his attention and the fledgling paused, twisting slightly
to try and discover from which direction it came from, it was an unusual scent,
it didn’t match anything he had ever smelt before but instead seemed to be a
combination of many things, there was a little mortal scent, a little vampire
but most of the scent seemed to match the spider creatures, but it even
differed from them, it seemed more refined. Shaking his head to try and clear
his nostrils of the strange scent, he shivered automatically assuming that such
a strange creature would be stronger than him and would most defiantly want to
eat him as most of the other creatures in this canyon did. So he turned and
walked away from the scent hoping he would find the factory in this direction,
there was after all a strong smell of oil and death coming down on the wind so
surely that would be the factory.
The
air was heavy in the canyons but it was a different heavy compared to the city,
the city was full of toxins and poisons which weighted the air down heavily. The
canyons, strangely seemed to be full of the same kind of poison but in a much
rawer form, this confused the fledgling as the city was polluted by the humans and
out here humans were . . . well eaten. The only other way that same pollution
could be out here was if it was brought out here, something big had happened
here recently, he half remembered his father mentioning something about an
event that occurred before Raziel was born; it seemed Kain was involved some
how but had never explained the extent of his involvement; Raziel sighed and
told himself that he didn’t care, he wasn’t interested. He didn’t care about
his father anymore, didn’t care what he had done, what he was doing, he didn’t
care that Kain was now with Turel and probably hadn’t noticed Raziel had gone.
He snivelled loudly the sound echoing off the walls, absently he wiped his eyes
knowing that they would be red and puffy.
He
didn’t care at all, not at all.
Who
was he kidding.
A
sound suddenly alerted the fledgling that he was being followed, the same scent
that had confused him earlier wafted over him and Raziel shivered, it seemed he
was being hunted. He glanced around looking hopefully for somewhere to hide, to
conceal both his body and scent to throw his pursuer off.
“You
are a vampire no?” a woman’s voice called out behind him, the scent suddenly
stronger “I had thought only one of your kind remained, you carry his scent but
you are not him.” Raziel turned slowly to see a petit woman with dusty brown
skin, strange markings and a strange face. But although he did not know who or
what she was he knew that her expression and body language was not that of an
enemy and with a childlike naivety he relaxed.
“Who
are you?” he asked trying to sound more confident than he felt, the woman
laughed quietly behind a cloven hand
“My
name matters little, I have had many names but you may call me seer if you wish
to label me something.” She had a warm look to her eyes and her voice was soft
and comforting after the raw sounds of those spider like creatures “and what do
they call you young one?”
“My
name is Raziel.” Raziel answered, feeling more at ease with every passing
moment, this woman seemed confident in a way that Kain was, as if she knew
nothing in this world could ever harm her.
“You
are Kain’s.” she said, Raziel blinked wondering how she could know such a
thing, Seer smiled at the fledglings confusion and gestured to him to come
closer to her “you are tired and hungry young one, let me shelter you for a
time.” She turned and began walking away as if she did not care if she was
followed or not.
Raziel
followed this strange woman noticing on her back, strange protrusions almost as
if the woman had tiny wings without feathers. She reminded him somewhat of the
paintings in Vorador’s mansion and the stained glass window; while she did not
look like the blue winged creatures she had the same kind of presence that the
images conveyed. The fledgling blinked trying to get a clear image of those
paintings in his mind but found himself unable, it was as if he was forgetting
them after only seeing them a few months previous. He sighed loudly following
the woman as she climbed with ease up onto a thin ledge, he blinked once more in
confusion noticing the strangeness of her feet, how different to his own they
were, delicate yet dangerous looking, he half wondered how she was able to
balance on such odd feet. She led him along the ledge before disappearing into
a crack in the wall barely big enough for her to fit into. Raziel followed, his
vision was not hampered by this darkness and he could follow her movements
easily as she crept through the darkness. The thin tunnel like walkway opened
out suddenly into a smooth walled hallow in which it seemed to woman lived.
“Will
you sit?” the woman asked gesturing to a few chairs around a small table that
looked to be hand carved by a clumsy artisan; briefly Raziel wondered how she
had gotten all this furniture in this place as the walkway by which they
entered seemed to be the only entrance and was far to small to allow the
movement of furniture. Maybe this woman had the same power as Kain and was able
to teleport.
“You
live here alone?” Raziel breathed wondering how lonely she must be,
“I
like my solitude,” Seer answered him “I have been invited to be with others
before but have refused each time.” She smiled and joined Raziel at the table
“your father once called me ally and asked me to come with him. As you can see
I said no, I doubt I would have survived mere moments with him. He has a
dangerous life both in the past and in his future.” Raziel swallowed
“I
have left my father.” He breathed, the words catching in his throat Seer smiled
widely as if amused by his grief “many have left and will leave your father but
not you, you will always remain by his side, loyal to the end little Raziel.”
“But,”
Raziel was confused “I have left him now.”
“Perhaps
you should tell me why you have left him.” Seer sat back, that infuriating
smile still on her face
“He
has no need for me,” Raziel looked away, flinching suddenly as Seer pushed a
cup filled with blood towards him, while sipping from a cup of her own, the
liquid within was not blood however it was something different, something
green. “He has Turel now to take care of, I am . . . I am supposed to leave
now.”
“You
are a fool little Raziel.” Seer whispered “to leave one who holds you so close,
one who needs you more than all but a mere few understand.” she sighed “it is
no wonder he does not trust any living or immortal soul on this land. If those
who claim to love him hurt him so.”
“But
. . .” Raziel began
“He
has Turel, Turel is young Raziel like you once were, like you still are, he
needs to be educated, to be loved the same way you did and do, a person only
has so much time in a day.”
“What
do you mean?” Raziel sighed; Seer shook her head as Raziel drained the contents
of his cup.
“You
should sleep little one.” She spoke quietly as if sad, the smile for once
slipping from her features, “I have placed something in your cup to aid your
sleep. Tomorrow I will show you what I mean.” Raziel blinked wondering what
this strange creature could mean, but already he felt his eyes becoming heavy.
His
entire world seemed to slow and stop as he drifted from consciousness.
* * *
“Wake
little Raziel.” A voice called, Raziel rolled over, absently shooing what ever
was making the sound away with a lazy arm,
“G’way.”
He murmured half hoping he would be left alone, he tried to curl deeper into
the sheets but that jerked him awake as he suddenly realised that there were no
sheets and he was in fat sleeping on cold stone not a soft bed as he had
thought he was, he was not at home being woken by his father, no, he was in the
canyons being woken by a woman whom he did not truly know.
“Little
Raziel you must wake, he is worried for you, you must return now.” Blearily
Raziel opened his eyes and looked into tawny gold eyes of the woman who called
herself Seer, she who had found him wandering the canyons and brought him here
for food and rest. Briefly he wondered why she was doing such a thing. “I do
this because it must be done,” the words made the fledgling jump and he stared
at the woman who stared right back at him. She could hear what he was thinking;
she could take ideas from his mind. He remembered his father telling him
stories of Vorador who could do the same thing. The fledgling paused, this
woman, Seer did look similar to Vorador in some ways. Obviously she was
different to the ancient vampire but she matched certain descriptions Kain had
given him about Vorador.
“I
think . . .” Raziel began then remembered something Seer had just said
“worried, who is worried?”
“Your
father worries for you, he searches the city hoping to find you, not knowing
that you have left him.” The woman answered helping the little fledgling to his
feet
“But
he left me!” Raziel snapped, “he said that I would be old enough one day to be
alone and then he left me, he took Turel and left me.” He was angry now, angry
at his father, angry at life and angry at this woman who seemed to know so much
but told so little.
“He
took Turel to safety first yes that is true but only because Turel is only just
capable of walking, you however are capable of so much more.” She got that
distant smile back now “so strange that such a child would be needed more than
the father.”
“What?”
Raziel asked following as the woman moved towards the exit of her home “what do
you mean, why do you speak so strangely!”
“He
needs you little Raziel, the scion needs you.” She slowly led him through the
thin, dark walk way “redeemer and destroyer, both are needed for balance. Both
are needed, both must unite what has been set asunder.” Raziel swallowed, the
words seemed to echo around the thin walk way, they held a weight that he found
strange and suffocating. They sounded of responsibility and of duty, both of which
he was not ready to understand.
“Please.”
He breathed “where are we going? What are you speaking of? Why talk like this?”
they exited the cave and Raziel frowned, it was dusk once more, he had
apparently slept for an entire night and day, his excursion into the canyons
having tired him out more than he had expected.
“I
am taking you home,” Seer spoke calmly “but first I must show you something.”
Instead of heading down towards the ground the strange woman turned and climbed
further up the canyon. Raziel followed, once more finding it strange how she
could walk and climb with such strange feet. “I am going to show you why you
are needed, seeing as how you seem to need to be shown, you don’t seem able to
understand that he loves you.” He voice became cold as she continued to climb
“you do not value love, you do not know the depth for which you both need each
other, for even without our future you would still need each other. Balance
must be healed young one, for balance cannot be restored if balance himself is
at an imbalance.” Raziel frowned as they bother cleared the top of the canyon,
the words confusing him more than anything she had said thus far.
What
on Nosgoth’s soil was she talking about.
Reaching
the top of the cliff the fledgling stopped he could see the city from this
height, it seemed so close now, when yesterday it felt as if he had walked for
miles before reaching here. No matter how far he thought he had been he had in
fact been still so close, the thought comforted him. He looked back to the
strange woman who had started to walk towards the city along the slim top of
the canyon.
“You
will see,” she whispered to herself and Raziel was once more confused, this
woman was so strange, she held a weight about herself as if she carried the
fate of the world on her shoulders.
She
seemed determined to show Raziel that he was in fact needed, which Raziel found
hard to believe. His father was strong and capable how could he possibly need a
fledgling to aid him, he needed no ones help, he had survived much before now
without aid so what made no so different? The seer leapt a small gap in the
rock top and Raziel followed, she led him to a tree which stood over a pool.
Raziel looked at the life here on top of the rocks wondering how it survived, there
was little in the way of soil here, it was all rock, and the pool, how did that
remain in this heat when all other water dried up or became stagnant?
“This
is a scurrying pool, used by ancient vampires, now only I live able to operate
it.” She knelt at the small pool and gestured for Raziel to do the same “the
tree was placed here by the guardian of nature, he made it so that it would
never die, so that it would remind us that no matter how difficult things are
life will find a way to survive.” She turned and smiled at the fledgling “I
want to show you something, look.” She gestured over the water.
Raziel
lent forwards slightly weary of the water, the memory of what water had done to
his fathers hand still fresh in his mind. He watched as his own reflection came
clearly to him in the water then gasped in shock as his reflection began to change,
his skin became darker, changing to blue, something hid the lower half of his
face from sight and glowing golden light replaced his eyes. The daemon in the
water moved, turning and Raziel looked to see what the daemon was looking at.
Images flashed before the fledgling vampire to fast for his eyes to truly focus
on them but slow enough that he still got a frightening amount of emotion from
them. Anger, hate, fear, betrayal and death. Raziel almost flew back away from
the pool, gasping for air, trying in vain to make sense of what he had seen,
none of the image made sense save from one.
The
daemon had killed his father.
“Only
you can stop it.” The Seer’s voice cut through his panic “only you are capable
to stop balance dying, redeemer and destroyer, which one will you be.” Raziel
frowned at her words, understanding only a little but it was enough, he could
stop his father from dying, he could save him, keep him alive, protect him; it
no longer mattered if Kain wanted him there or not, Kain had given him life,
given him love so now he would return the favour.
He
would save his father.
“I
think,” Raziel swallowed “I think I want to go home now.”
