Pairing: Kain/Sebastian

Setting: post Blood Omen, pre Blood Omen Two

Authoress note: This fic gave me grief for at least six months, it was wrote, deleted, re-wrote, re-deleted and re-wrote again. Then it was burned and buried, I have now found it and changed it beyond reckoning, shaping it into something which hopefully will pass as acceptable.

{Sebastian}

They had been called back home, back to the mansion in the swamp.

There had been talk of war for a long time now, so long that Sebastian couldn’t quiet remember when he had first heard the whispers or felt the tension in the land.

It was slowly becoming more and more dangerous to be a vampire in Nosgoth, villages were setting up more watches, more men were training to become hunters and people were quicker to react with spears and swords to rumours that before would only have received a shrug. Up until recently he had laughed at the thought of war, in his mind war was far too drastic an outcome. He had scoffed when the subject was raised in taverns often saying ‘A few over enthusiastic witch hunts does not a war make’. However after months of listening in taverns and brothels, a few months watching the mortals become more and more agitated and a few months of having to flee nearly every village he stopped in; he had come to accept that maybe something really was actually going to happen.

But why war? Why now? What could have caused such a loud mortal outcry?

He hunted around for answers in areas where brave men fear to tread and had discovered a few plausible answers to his questions. Vampiric numbers had been slowly on the increase for some time now and as a result mortal loses had also been rising. This fact was being exploited by those in charge, or more specifically those who wanted to be in charge. Sebastian had lived through a change in the balance of power before and it hadn’t been overly pleasant, many terrible things had happened; he’d died for one thing. He had been a young mortal officer and had fallen at the claws of a vampire, only to wake a day later as what he hated.

However neither of these two reasons was enough to cause a war, the main cause for war was an event that occurred a few years ago when the pillar guardians were murdered by a vampire. This little event had been observed by two schools of mortal thought, there were the mortals who saw the guardians as a bigger threat than the vampires, tearing the world apart with their magic; and there were those who saw the guardians as the tragic martyrs of a cruel and merciless vampire. Those who wished to be in power were now using this event to exploit the human’s fears and rally them into War. Sebastian himself was unsure how to view the falling of the pillars, at first he had doubted the truth of it but when presented with proof he was unsure whether to admire the stranger’s bravery or to curse his foolishness.

For it was he who had caused a war that the vampires were destined to lose.

But the cause of events mattered little now that they were in motion and Sebastian and his brothers had been called back home, to the mansion in the swamps by Vorador. It had been at least five years since they had all been together. The group often found it difficult to work together; arguments rose easily and quickly; usually escalating into matters far worse than they really should be. Often trivial rivalries would lead to spilt blood and mauled limbs.

Sebastian jumped suddenly, jerked from his thoughts by Vorador’s entrance into the ‘dinning’ room; his surprise made Faustus snigger and before Sebastian had really thought about it he was getting to his feet with the intention of ripping Faustus a new mouth in his belly. Vorador seeing this sighed loudly, sat down and rubbed at his temples as if suffering a headache; Sebastian winced apologetically at his sire, sat back down himself and tried in vain to ignore his two younger siblings.

“I had hoped with the threat of war,” Vorador began “that you would manage to put aside your petty differences and fight as one.”

“Sire they . . .” Marcus began but fell silent when Vorador raised a talloned hand, Sebastian couldn’t help but smirk. It was a very childish sort of glee that spread through him when his two younger siblings were put down.

“I have called back to me all my fledglings, I am raising an army,” the emerald vampire snapped “but it will not be an army until it has leaders, right now our only defence against the Serefan is an . . . an untrained rabble.” He sighed again “tell me, did you all want to die?”

“Sire,” Magnus spoke up “we have no wish to die, the . . . the severity of the situation is . . .,”

“It is far more severe than you could know,” Vorador interrupted “I have witnessed Genocide twice now, please don’t make me have to do it again,”

“Sire,” Faustus actually managed to look apologetic, Sebastian made a face, there was no way that could be sincere Faustus was just too much of a lout for it to be sincere

“I have given you the chance to lead and so far you have all simply bickered amongst yourselves, you’ve been here three weeks now and not once have any of you even looked at the army, none of you have made judgements on what we should prepare and none of you have even made the effort to speak with your troops.”

Sebastian winced at that comment because it was true, their sire had trusted them to lead and they had done nothing but argue amongst themselves, at this rate the vampires were going to fall prey to the mortal’s fears and it would be their fault that the vampires went down without a fight. Guilt suddenly bit at Sebastian along with a grim sense of determination. They were not children they should be able to work together like any other army and so they would, they would not fail the vampire race, they would not die lying down.

“We will not fail again Sire,” Sebastian nodded resolutely, Vorador smiled at him and Sebastian had to stop himself looking away, it was not a pleasant smile, one he would never have liked directed at him.

“No you will not fail, because I am not giving you the task of leadership,” Vorador looked smug,

“Sire?” Magnus looked appalled, out of all of his siblings it was him who truly wished to lead, him who truly found it honourable and right to lead the vampire army against the humans. “If not us then . . . then who?” he demanded then at Vorador’s expression coughed and rambled “who else would be worthy of leading your army,”

“Flattery is a tackles art Magnus,” Vorador mumbled “and I have already come to the conclusion of who I will have lead.” Part of Sebastian froze in fear at those words while the other part melted in relaxation. He would not be responsible . . . but who would be?

“Sire?” Marcus asked beating Sebastian to the question.

“Kain and I met a long time ago,” Vorador smiled “we found we had a lot in common and decided to take over the world together.”

* * *

The brothers did not take well to the prospect of being subjected to the leadership of one they did not know. They had had many questions about their new leader but their father was sparse in answering them and the information he did give them only wounded their pride more. It was hard enough to imagine following someone you do not know to a war you do not think you can win, but to find out that someone is centuries younger than you was a serious blow to the brothers pride.

However over time the wounds to their pride healed. Faustus was the first and most accepting, he seemed to care little for leadership and responsibility; all Faustus cared about was the fact that he survive, that he be on the winning. Magnus was more surprisingly next to follow; as the eldest of the four Magnus would have been the unofficial leader of the brothers and to have that just stripped away should have been a serious blow but Magnus was also the most reasonable minded of the group and after a few nights sulking claimed that he understood the survival of the race was more important than his pride.

Marcus, no one could be sure about, Marcus always seemed in a foul mood and nothing had really changed, if Marcus was still angry that they were to follow a vampire so much younger than themselves or if he found something new to belly ache over his attitude was always the same. Sebastian was distressed that his sire no longer trusted him and his brothers to lead but then he also knew his Sire was right and that working together they weakened the vampires chances for survival. So that having them individually was much better. Vorador’s rational of separating them did make a lot of sense to Sebastian. But to follow someone who had had never met before, someone with so much less experience; how was he supposed to follow someone who he had never met, someone who he didn’t know whether to trust or not?

It was hard for the brothers to believe the stories Vorador told of the fledgling set to lead them, not only because of wounded pride but also because of facts. Young vampires were completely dependant on their sires until they were nearly a century old, sometimes it took longer and according to Vorador’s stories this set Kain at three years and no one had ever heard of a fledgling actually surviving on its own.

* * *

Vorador had not asked anyone to be at the front gates tonight to meet Kain on his arrival but Sebastian knew there would be a small crowd, to many rumours had been spread to not spark an interest in the vampires of the mansion. No doubt everyone would want to see what all the fuss was about. That said it did not surprise Sebastian in the least when he almost collided head first with his elder brother.

“You too, huh?” Magnus asked Sebastian nodded smirking, Magnus was perhaps the most curious of the elder fledglings, Sebastian was a little surprised that Magnus was not already at the gates barrelling Vorador with questions.

“I just want to see what someone who could pull down the pillars single handed being only a month or so old at the time, looks like.” Sebastian shrugged trying to look distant and disinterested but obviously failing.

“Yes of course Seb,” Magnus grinned “you just were mildly interested,” he punched his brother’s shoulder “you haven’t said a word about anything else for three weeks now; honestly I thought Vorador was going to tear out your tongue yesterday.”

“I am curious,” Sebastian admitted, there was no shame in being interested “Vorador’s description of his power and his reckless nature has . . . sparked my curiosity.” Manus smiled widely amused by his brother’s attempt to hide just how interested he was, Vorador hadn’t just explained about the new fledgling’s power, he’d given a full description also and Magnus had watched Sebastian’s eyes catch fire. His brother was more than interested.

“I doubt that’s all the stories sparked,” Magnus grinned, Sebastian felt his face burn

“Just what is that supposed to mean?” he asked indignant, Magnus grinned wider at his brothers’ reaction to his teasing.

“Nothing,” Magnus tried to look innocent “its just you seem a little too interested.”

“TOO INTERESTED!” Sebastian almost roared “he’s going to lead us into battle, a battle in which the odds are stacked against us, I simply want to know what kind of creature he is,”

“Sure you do,” Magnus nodded, Sebastian opened his mouth to roar at his brother but stopped himself as they arrived at the front gates. The rain was coming down in steady constant drops enough to kill a fledgling and seriously wound and elder. Sebastian’s estimation had been right, there were quiet a few fledglings gathered around the main entrance waiting for a glimpse of the new comer. Together the brothers pushed through the small crowd.

“You almost missed him,” Vorador smirked at his children as they appeared beside him “he entered the swamp ten minuets ago, he should be here by now.”

“You’re keeping a close eye father,” Magnus muttered but fell silent at the glare he received, the comment had obviously been taken as insinuating Vorador feared the newcomer.

“Kain is . . . dangerous, very dangerous but he is also the only one who . . . there.”  Sebastian looked to his father who was frowning out at the swamp, he followed his fathers line of sight, a vampire was leaping  from outcropping to outcropping over the swamp. A dark cloak and coat covered it from head to toe, legs appeared and disappeared as the creature jumped and landed.

“It's him” Vorador smirked. Sebastian raised an eyebrow.

Suddenly Sebastian’s heart leapt into his throat as the ground the fledgling landed on crumbled and gave way, the reaction startled him somewhat as he didn’t even know this one yet his body was reacting as if he was a close friend. He felt his eyes widen as the fledgling disappeared in a cloud of mist and reappeared on an embankment. He had a mist form, Sebastian was somewhat impressed, the old vampire powers were slowly fading now, becoming rarer and rarer, it had been a few years now since anyone had developed the power to shift and change their form.

“I haven’t seen mist in years,” Magnus breathed, Vorador smirked and glanced to his now very interested childe.

The cloaked fledgling landed a little way in front of the mansion and walked the few steps it took to enter the front door. He stopped inside and shook himself a little and droplets of muddy water flew onto Magnus’ frock coat. The cloaked fledgling looked to Magnus but before he could say anything, Vorador was dragging him off to be dried and fed and before anyone could get a good look at him Vorador had teleported them away. Sebastian sighed, Vorador had a harsh temper but his parental protectiveness was stronger still, yet as the fledglings around the door were starting to return to their duties Vorador whispered to Magnus and Sebastian.

“The north wing Library we will meet you there.”

“He can’t be that powerful,” Sebastian muttered absently as the two made their way to the library after returning to Magnus room, so he could change his coat “I mean what people say . . . it’s not all true; it can’t be.”

“I doubt there is much truth, no one has had the power of bats in over thirty years now, and not even Vorador has enough raw magical energy to summon lightening.” Magnus smiled a little at his brother, wondering how long until Sebastian would admit his ‘interest’.

“You’re right,” Sebastian breathed but he didn’t look convinced “but . . . but what if he can?”

“Well so what,” Magnus answered “he’s still just a fledgling,”

“Vorador said something strange the other day,” Sebastian swallowed “he said . . . Kain shoulders a much greater burden than he realizes. What if . . .” He stopped as they approached a door with the painting of a blue winged creature. The two paused outside the door, they could hear Vorador snapping at what sounded like Marcus, Sebastian laughed.

“They’re at it again,” he mumbled. The two entered the library to see Vorador, Faustus and Marcus but no other “where’s . . .” Sebastian began but was interrupted

“He’s on his way, I had him shown to rooms,” Vorador answered before Sebastian could even finish the question.

“But Sire,” Marcus began, obviously picking up from where he left off “after seeing him, are you really certain it’s wise for him to be the . . .” the arguing fledgling was stopped as the main door to the library slammed open. Sebastian span to look at the newcomer only to have his heart stop dead in his chest.

This creature couldn’t be what had pulled the pillars down surely? It was . . . young a lot younger looking than Sebastian had expected, couldn’t have been long out of education, if it had gone to any that was but by the look of it, the shape of his face the way he walked and held himself Sebastian knew this had been a noble at one point and by the frightening looking sword he could tell he was a fighter to. The fledgling was dressed in a now dry long blue coat, his hair looked as if someone had just attacked it with a brush, but it shone in the candle light beaten into submission by whomever had wielded the brush. However swamp muck still covered his boots.

Sebastian swallowed again, this was not what he had been expecting, he was . . . beautiful.

In that instant he knew the stories were true and his heart started hammering as if trying to escape his chest.

“Some host you are,” the fledgling said calmly sitting across from Vorador, “leave me to get lost in this labyrinth you call a home,”

“Nice to see you as well Kain,” Vorador smiled. “You look . . .”

“Wet actually,” Kain snapped shaking his still slightly dam hair, “in case you haven’t noticed it’s been raining for the last three nights,”

“Yes,” Vorador nodded “I did notice, tell me, did you approve of your room?” Kain raised his eyebrows

“Planning on keeping me here?” he asked

“I was . . . for a short time, yes.” Vorador answered “and before you say anything arguing isn’t going to be worthwhile,” Kain opened his mouth to do just that but Vorador cut him off “please hear me out, I’m sure a good meal, warm bed and some company will do you the world of good and improve your mood somewhat,” the elder looked around as the door opened and ‘food’ was brought in. “you must be hungry.” Vorador stated it was not a question.

“No actually.” Kain refused “I ate before I got here, I will however take the offer of a bed.”

“You do look worn,” Vorador breathed and Kain pulled a face surprising Sebastian at the childish action “go then rest, but I wish to speak to you very soon.”

“Joy,” Kain muttered and stood, “can I have a map before I go,” he snapped

* * *

And so Kain came to be at the mansion.

The next month passed smoothly for most of the residents, Marcus however seemed to make it his personal mission to make everyone as miserable as he was; many however ignored him. Sebastian was another for whom the month did not go smoothly but for a very different reason to Marcus. Marcus’ problem was that he did not like the new fledgling while Sebastian’s was that he liked him a little too much.

Sebastian was becoming very confused, if it had simply been a bodily reaction he could have dealt with it, he would have gotten over it but this was more than simple physical infatuation. True there was a very physical side to his attraction, every stupid smile made his insides melt, every word made him shiver, and every accidental touch had made his head spin. But there was also a stronger emotional reaction and this was what was confusing him it was so strange that he could feel so intensely about someone he had known for such a short time. No one had ever had this kind of effect on him before, none of those he had slept with and proclaimed to love had ever been able to knot up his insides the way this damn fledgling did.

It was actually painful for him now to be apart from Kain, it made him feel like a part of himself were missing. It was like he had become a slave, he lived for his smile, for his approval, for his love. It was true he had ‘loved’ others in the past but when he looked back on it now it felt shallow and meaningless compared to how he felt currently.

And he liked it.

* * *

Sebastian tensed everything he could possibly tense ready to take the blow but after a moment of nothingness he opened his eyes, the human was stood in front of him in the same position they had been when they had swung at him, it was as if he was frozen. Yet not frozen, he couldn’t seem to move his limbs but his face worked perfectly and a stream of terrified profanities poured from his mouth. Sebastian turned at a petrified gurgle and frowned; the remaining three humans were all stuck in position as well; he turned to Kain who was smirking in a moronic fashion.

“What did you do?” he asked amazed, reaching out he pushed the human in front of him and watched as the mortal fell gracelessly and still frozen to the ground, he listened as Kain sniggered

“They are unable to move as the spell holds them for a time,” Kain’s smirk couldn’t help but grow at the fascinated look on Sebastian’s face, something between complete adoration and total amazement. The Ashen haired vampire shook his head slightly, he liked that expression far to much.

“They’re still aware then?” Sebastian asked leaning over the fallen human who was glaring at him with more hate and fear than Sebastian had seen in a long, long time

“Perfectly,” Kain nodded, his smirk turned into a savage grin that made Sebastian’s blood run cold in fear but boil at the same time.

He both wanted that grin aimed at him and away from him, the duel emotions made his head spin. How could one so reckless control so much power? The idea terrified him but only for a moment as a sudden scary amount of lust coursed through him like fire, such power with such little control, there was something about the danger something about the fact that one so ‘delicate’ and beautiful should be so powerful, it made Sebastian burn.

Kain watched him with an odd expression for a moment before shrugging and sending the reaver through one of the frozen mortals. Sebastian watched as the human fell and for a moment he fancied he could see the soul being sucked into the blade but shook his head, shaking the image away. He had problems enough at the moment he did not need to sit here and romanticise the bloody soul Reaver. Vorador had in the time since Kain’s arrival explained much about the blade and it had surprised everyone how much he knew of it. He had also seemed very edgy when he found out Kain had the blade, Sebastian didn’t understand the real reason but was sure it was linked to Kain being the Balance guardian.

“We should move,” Kain muttered looking west towards the village.

Sebastian felt his nose twitch as a different scent came suddenly closer, more mortals. Kain seemed to notice at the same time and span on his heal sending a glowing red bolt of energy into the bushes; to Sebastian’s horror a man stepped out, dropped his weapon and seemed to be shaking badly. It only took a second for what ever Kain had done to him to start; Sebastian stood and watched as the man’s skin fell from his bones. At once horrified and captivated he looked to his Lord.

“Move sounds like,” he swallowed “a good idea,” he edged away from the magically flayed corpse.

They were on a rescue mission, three fledglings had been captured and Vorador being revolted by the loss of vampiric life had sent them to the small village with the order to save what they could. It was odd for them to launch a rescues mission with just two but Manus, Faustus and Marcus were away scouting villages for more fledglings and possible battle sights; leaving Kain and Sebastian. The village wasn’t far from the swamp and the two made good time, it was only a few short hours after sunset when they approached the main gate into the village.

Sebastian paused and ducked into the foliage as they came into site of the gateway. Kain remained on the path and turned to look at Sebastian as if he’d just grown an extra head.

“What on Nosgoth are you doing?” Kain asked as Sebastian stood up and stepped out of the bush he’d leapt into with as much dignity as possible.

“Hiding from the guards on the gate . . . why are you not.”  He frowned, the men on the gateway had noticed them now and Sebastian could see that they were watching them in a very peculiar way.

“I don’t need to,” Kain couldn’t help but smirk “and neither do you,” reaching forwards Kain grabbed Sebastian’s arm and almost dragged the older fledgling towards the gateway. The gatekeepers watched them closely as they walked through Kain smirked at them as one raised an eyebrow “excuse my pretty friend.” He leaned over to whisper something to one of the gatekeepers, after a moment the gatekeepers smirked and nodded letting the vampires past.

“What?” Sebastian asked hearing the guards sniggering. He turned to Kain and glared hard but the glare melted instantly when Kain smiled at him. Sebastian shook himself trying to remember why he was so angry “what did you say to them?”

“I told them you were a little drunk,” Kain answered, Sebastian glared again “you jumped into a bush Sebastian. What was I supposed to say, you love plants . . . . a lot? ”

“Why didn’t they stop us?” Sebastian asked swallowing his pride at being dubbed ‘a drunk’ “they looked at you as if you were a man,”

“Beguile,” Kain answered, “and I am a man, encase you were wondering.” The look he gave Sebastian was nothing short of predatory and Sebastian looked away trying not to blush, he hated this teasing streak that Kain seemed to have inherited from Magnus; far too often it struck a little to close to home.

“Well I . . . . I wasn’t . . . I mean,” Sebastian mumbled but was interrupted

“We have to find an alley,” Kain interrupted, Sebastian frowned noticing a fine sheen of blood sweat on his lords brow “this spell uses a lot of power and I can’t hold it around both of us for long.”

Finding an alley was easy the village was practically made up of them however deciding what to do after that was more difficult. The village was cramped full of humans, many of which were armed, despite their poor skill the mortal would win through sheer numbers if it came down to a fight between them.

“We can’t just walk out onto the streets,” Sebastian muttered “we’ll be killed instantly and we don’t even know where they’re holding the fledglings,”

“That I can find out,” Kain answered looking smug, slowly glancing out of the alley he smirked widely at a mortal then went completely still. Sebastian frowned

“Kain?” he whispered his General didn’t respond “Kain!” He reached out to touch the pale fledgling; but his hand met with a barrier inches away from Kain’s skin and Sebastian winced as it sent a small lightening like shock through him. Behind the barrier Kain still didn’t move, it was as if his soul had left his body. Luckily as Sebastian was starting to panic Kain shook himself and the barrier faded.

“Town square, they’re bound to poles, I think they’re going to be burnt,” Kain paused stalking towards the end of the alley and peering round onto the street “and before you ask it was a mind control,”

“You’re amazing.” Sebastian breathed before he could stop himself and froze as Kain turned and looked at him, but to his surprise the fledgling general actually blushed slightly under the praise before turning away.

“Rooftops then?” Sebastian coughed, Kain nodded and they leapt upwards. The height gave them a clear view of the village and Sebastian instantly spotted the fledglings, his embarrassment and confusion at Kain’s reaction lessening as he occupied himself with more . . . productive activities.

“There they are,” Sebastian pointed

“I can see them,” Kain muttered sounding as if he were concentrating hard, the fledglings were being held in a small yard behind the town hall, surrounded by fifteen mortals armed with swords and armour.

“How are we going to get them away from the humans?” Sebastian asked and tried to think of a way, there was always the idea of distraction, they could let themselves be seen, draw the mortal guards away before doubling back. Or they could panic the group or . . . suddenly Kain stood held out his hand, a green orb of energy filled his palm, he grinned that blood boiling grin at Sebastian and tipped his palm letting the orb fall, landing on a single mortal on the edge of the group.

“Rot,” Kain whispered and instantly the human’s flesh began to do just that, he melted in seconds. The group yelled and started to panic

“That’ll work,” Sebastian muttered standing as well

“It gets better,” Kain grinned and laughed as the rotting mortal was pushed into several whole humans, the liquid it seemed was contagious and those touched also began to decay at a rapid rate.

It only took three minuets before the whole group was gone.

“You’re showing off now aren’t you,” Sebastian laughed

“Maybe,” Kain admitted, and before Sebastian could ask himself why Kain would be showing off to him, Kain drew him from his thoughts “Don’t touch it,” Kain said before leaping down and skirting around the green, foul smelling pus that covered the ground. “Wouldn’t want to rot that pretty face now would we?” Sebastian nearly chocked before regaining his self control. He hated this teasing!

“What was it?” Sebastian asked, he was beginning to understand why Kain had been capable of pulling down the pillars

“Font of putrescence,” Kain muttered absently as he clambered ungracefully onto the platform where the fledgling were waiting bound to posts ready to be set alight. “it causes mortal and immortal flesh to rot and is potent for some time afterwards,”

“It smells,” Sebastian mumbled as he to untied a captive fledgling, Kain laughed at him, the smile made him blush and Sebastian had to pause for a moment and swallow heavily as a lump formed in his throat. Was his general flirting with him? Or was he just teasing like Magnus always did?

“Yes it does,” Kain smirked “but wouldn’t you after rotting in about three seconds?” Sebastian nodded and looked out across what was the village

“You can’t have killed all the guards, we’d better go before they regroup,” he spoke with authority making Kain raise an eyebrow but he agreed anyway and the five of them leapt down from the platform and started towards the outer wall of the village using alleys and rooftops; occasionally having to hide or slaughter some hapless mortal.

They made it at least half way before the shouts of anger and clang of metal weapons reached their ears, instantly they broke into a run, no longer caring about stealth and hoping to be out of the village and into the woods before the villagers caught up. But the village guard were not as stupid as they seemed and the gate to the village was closed when the vampires reached it. Primitive arrows flew down from the wall and Sebastian kicked down a door to one of the shops, ushering the fledglings inside.

“What now,” he asked Kain “we need to get past that gate,”

“Stay here, go when the gate opens,” Kain spoke without looking at him and turned and bolted out of the building. There was the sound of footsteps on the rooftop then a loud cry and thump, sticking his head out of the doorway Sebastian saw that the guards on the wall had been thrown down; grinning he moved the fledglings towards the gate which was slowly opening.

“Who needs a locksmith,” Sebastian grinned as Kain leapt down from the wall, the general looked confused for a moment before smiling a little at the comment, Sebastian could tell he didn’t get the joke.

It was defiantly becoming more and more plausible to believe that Kain had single handed torn down the pillars, it was an amazing feat but now Sebastian could see the raw power that ran just under Kain’s skin and he knew it was all true. The fledgling was physically strong but it was with magic that he was truly a force to be reckoned with.

“Bugger,” Kain snapped turning to look as the village guard turned a corner, the gate was rising slowly and the fledglings were ducking underneath it in an effort to escape. Kain turned to face the on coming mob and Sebastian pulled on his arm

“Don’t be stupid, you can’t take on that many head on, you’ll die,” Sebastian felt fear at those words, what if Kain did die? Why did that thought suddenly terrify him? But as he was thinking an invisible force shot past him and upwards, the sky rumbled ominously and lightening fell from the heavens, hitting several of the guards.

A lightening spell.

The lightening spell that even the pillar guardians hadn’t always been able to master. The remaining guard stopped, Sebastian looked to Kain who was sweating, the constant use of magic taking it toll on the fledgling.

“Go, now,” was the barked order as he shot a clear bolt of energy into the now on coming group, Sebastian watched as a soul was torn from its mortal coil.

Kain did it again and again before the remaining mortals reached them. Sebastian was morally torn, the fledglings on the other side of the gate were screaming at him to come but he couldn’t leave Kain. He couldn’t leave the fledglings either, they needed him. They needed him to show them back to the mansion, the poor creatures were terrified, it was his duty to rescue them but then he couldn’t leave Kain, the constant use of his magic wearing at him, leaving him to tired to shift his form to escape, he could die, he could die! Sebastian felt heat under his skin as panic stole through him; he recognised blood rage a split second before he leapt.

It was over in half a minuet,

“You are a bloody fool,” Kain snapped lifting him “why would you do something like that!” Sebastian winced as he was lifted and instantly felt the grip he was in become gentler, looser but still supporting him.

“Vorador said . . .,” he breathed “look after . . . you,” he ran out of energy

“I don’t care what Vorador said,” Kain snapped “if Vorador told you to go jump in the lake would you!” the general paused “dear god I sound like my father,” Sebastian laughed a little and coughed, his throat feeling wet, he spat blood onto the ground.

“I’ll be alright,” he muttered feeling embarrassed being this close to his Lord “put me down,” now Kain laughed

“Sure I will,” he laughed but sobered quickly “just . . . just go to sleep, you moron . . . why would you risk yourself like that for . . . me?” Sebastian felt himself smile and felt the grey spots of sleep and concussion flutter about his mind; he reached up with a bloodied right hand and touched Kain’s face

“You really are wonderful aren’t you?” he breathed as Kain leaned down into his touch, he felt himself move forwards, just as he thought he would close the distance his he slumped back feeling the grey on the edges of his vision close completely over.

Sebastian lost consciousness.

* * *

A few weeks passed in the mansion and Sebastian spent them thinking. Thinking of everything that was happening, everything that would happen, he’d come so close to closing the distance between them the night in the village and finally kissing the one he wanted, he also come close to dying that night, he’d risked his life to save him.

The weeks after they had returned Sebastian had nearly closed that distance twice more. Both times Kain had stopped just short, waiting for him to make the finishing move and both times he’d lost his nerve and bolted. He’d been close enough last night that he had felt Kain’s breath on his mouth, felt the small amount of heat that emanated from the other fledgling on his skin, he’d been so close that still thinking of it made his stomach leap and dance and his heart stop. He’d ran back to his room after that and had proceeded to spend the rest of the night lying awake trying not to imagine what could have happened had he closed the distance.

He had become such an expert in what ‘could’ have happened that it was becoming sad. Some of the times it was he who had closed the distance between them, taking the lead, pinning his Lord –the phrase sent a shiver through him- to the wall and later to the floor or a mattress, making him beg, plead and then demand. Other times it was Kain who closed the distance, Kain who took the lead, lifted him, carried him, rushed him to a room, sometimes they made it to his room other times they found an empty dinning room or library, table, floor or bed he always begged in the end.

The weeks and days had slowly ticked by since the night in the village, filling his sleep with dreams of ‘could happen’ then waking alone to what ‘had happened’ everyday he grew that little more desperate, he burned a little more inside, ached a little more acutely and thus gained a little more confidence to finally try again.

The third time was the charm.

The smaller of the two libraries was dark lit only by a few candles dotted about the room and a larger one beside the chair. The main chandelier of the room had not been lit and the shadows that shifted and flickered across the floor made the room look alive. The velvet drapes covering the windows were purple and red, the colours reflected in the dark wood of the shelves and floor made the whole room seem like it was alive. The red and the purple, the candles and the warmth from the fire made anyone inside feel as if they were inside a living creature, a great dark womb. As Sebastian entered he swallowed heavily, the heat from the fire was comforting, the old smell of burnt incense gave the room a heavy atmosphere and he felt the first trace of blood-sweat flash over him.

Looking around he saw what he was looking for. Kain was curled in one of the voluminous leather chairs, a heavy bound tome in his hands. Sebastian smiled and felt his stomach knot in on itself, lower things tightened at the thought of what he was about to attempt and what could be the result. Absently checking to make sure he didn’t embarrass himself he walked further into the room. The book in Kain’s lap was old and thick, Sebastian could smell the ancient parchment from here, he fancied it was a magic book, telling tale of the secret movement of power he now knew Kain held within himself. Half wild, crazed magic that Kain was hardly ever in complete control of, Sebastian fancied he could here it pulsing along with Kain’s heart, a second heart beat, one for blood another for power.

“You know,” he started trying to keep his voice from shaking “for someone who dislikes reading you read more than Vorador,”

Kain looked up at the words and Sebastian felt his heart stop and everything in him tightened. The candle light had flickered over him appear as a silver white spectre; awash in the dull warm light of the candles his flesh appeared luminous in the light. For a moment Sebastian thought either he was dreaming and any moment now he would be pulled into a heart stopping time breaking kiss or that the gods were teasing him, taunting him with what he would never have the nerve to reach out and take.

“I never said I disliked reading, just that losing books does not make me weep.” Kain muttered looking back to the thick book in his lap “and I was younger then,”

“You should sleep,” Sebastian muttered approaching until he stood in front of the chair, “you may be immortal but you not invulnerable.”

“You sound like an old mother,” Kain raised his eyes to meet Sebastian’s before turning his eyes back to the book again, Sebastian wanted to tear it away.

“Someone’s got to take care of you,” Sebastian thought, jerking suddenly as he realised he’d said the words aloud, he slowly looked back to Kain who had raised an almost invisible ashen eyebrow

“And you would . . . take care of me?” Kain’s voice was a deep rumbling sound that sent shivers through Sebastian’s spine. “In more ways than one,” Sebastian’s mind yelled but his mouth wouldn’t work

“I . . . I didn’t mean . . . what I meant was . . .” he stuttered hopelessly, not knowing what to say, Kain was watching him intently, almost as if he knew what Sebastian wanted and was waiting for him to give the verbal go ahead. Eventually after a few moments of silent blushing on Sebastian’s part Kain sighed and looked back to his book. Sebastian felt his shoulders dip. He wanted to rage with frustration, shout, yell, bang his head on a wall, anything just to get his thoughts straight in his own mind so he could voice them.

Magnus smiled as he entered the small library, walking proudly over to the two and settling himself opposite them.

“You should sleep at some point you realise.” he smirked Kain rolled his eyes “you know I’m right,” Magnus,’ voice had a sing-song quality to it. The book was closed with a sharp sound as Kain sighed

“Fine, I give up!” pale hands were raised in defeat “I surrender, you two win.”

“No one can resist my charm,” Magnus winked, Sebastian felt a tiny thread of anger bite at him as his brother winked. How could it be so easy for him? Why was it so simple for Magnus to simply say things like that without feeling or looking completely ridiculous? Sebastian knew that if he ever voiced his thoughts in that way he’d be laughed straight out of the mansion. He watched as Kain stood and he lifted the book, candle light still flickering catching on his hair and skin making it shine in places; it was like the gods were taunting him!

“You’re planning on reading in your room, aren’t you?” Manus sighed overdramatically “does this mean I have to tie you to the bed?” his smirk returned “I wouldn’t mind,”

“Stop it Magnus before you sprain something,” Kain shook his head and sighed, Magnus smirked widely,

“I wouldn’t mind getting a sprain,” it was almost like the older vampire couldn’t help himself. “if it was the right one.”

“Go away Magnus,” Kain muttered good-naturedly and retreated from the library leaving the two brothers alone.

Sebastian had bitten the insides of his mouth and now tasted blood, part of him was raging at his brother the other part envied him, how he made it seem so easy to get his wants and intentions out while making it banter. Sebastian unclenched his jaw and sighed. Magnus smiled to him before yawning widely muttering something about the coming of dawn and retreating. Sebastian nodded as his brother retreated and turned to make his way towards his own rooms. He hated sounding so childish but it was so unfair, why was it so easy for some. Maybe the gods really were taunting him, maybe it was a test to see if he was capable, dear gods how pathetic he must be if he couldn’t even land a man he’d lusted after for weeks now. He stopped, while it was true he lusted after Kain . . . there was something else as well

“Probably sheer desperation,” he muttered to himself

“Desperation? Desperation for what now I wonder?”

Sebastian jumped, yelping loudly before an alabaster hand closed over his mouth effectively shutting him up, he struggled making as much noise as was possible through the strong grip that now held him. But the grip did not yield a centimetre, until he sunk fang into the hand and tasted blood. The grip let go and instantly Sebastian fell into a defensive stance and turned to meet his attacker

“Calm down, anyone would think I was trying to murder you,” Pale hands ran through paler bone coloured hair “you bit me,” Kain mumbled admiring the set of bite marks on his palm, licking at the blood

“Don’t do that!” Sebastian relaxed taking a deep breath before saying “what was it you wanted?”

“I wanted to ask you what it was you were trying to say in the library” Kain smirked and Sebastian’s stomach fell like a rock, there was something in Kain’s expression that said loud and clear that he already knew what Sebastian wanted to say. Sebastian suspected Kain had known for a long time, why hadn’t he said anything? Sebastian swallowed and tried to decipher the look in his Lord’s face, was he angry, was he happy or was he just trying to make Sebastian seem foolish.

“You already know, don’t you?” Sebastian muttered giving up

“I might,” Kain’s smile widened

“Well . . . uh . . . I meant,” he struggled and hated himself for appearing imprudent and dim witted

“You seem to be having trouble with your words,” Kain’s smirk widened, Sebastian wondered briefly if he could actually smile properly and not smirk. “Perhaps I will be kind and aid you,”

Before Sebastian had time to process the words ebony lips closed over his own.

* * *

It was done.

That one moment Sebastian had gained what he most wanted, what he had ached for the last three months and what a prise it was.

* * *

He couldn’t tell how long they stood in the corridor pressed together, he hadn’t really even been aware that he was being moved, but he yelped when he felt himself slammed against a different wall. Taking a moment to look around he recognised the hallways they had wandered into; north wing, second floor, Kain was taking him to . . . his room. With that knowledge his entire body tightened again, tensing and he gasped aloud at the rage of sensation, it was so good it was almost pain. Kain drew back as if surprised, and instantly Sebastian lunged forwards closing the space between them again, he heard Kain laugh but didn’t care; he couldn’t stand to be away right now, he needed to touch, it was burning him not to.

He groaned as Kain pushed him back a little before leaning forwards again slower with less desperation, softer. Kain nuzzled at the other vampire’s cheek with his own, just giving the skin contact first before letting his tongue flick out to a pointed ear; Sebastian felt his throat close and he gasped for air and arched tilting his head back, glowing red eyes fluttering shut. Again he heard Kain laugh quieter this time but again he didn’t care because he didn’t stop. He felt black lips wander and start nipping down across his jaw back towards his mouth, when they reached his mouth Sebastian yelped and snapped his head back.

“You bit me!” he snapped, Kain just smirked

“I have to open the door unless you specifically want to go in the hallway,” Sebastian blushed hotly at the words he’d actually forgotten again where they were, he paused and used the moments Kain took unlocking the door to catch his breath. He was really here, he was really going to have want he’d wanted, what he’d burned for, for the entire last month all of it, it would all be his. The instant the door was open he rushed forwards, nearly knocking Kain over; crushing their mouths together again all the while pushing the younger vampire backwards forcefully until legs hit the end of the bed and over they went.

Pulling back he smirked at the wide eyed expression of surprise on the ashen haired vampires face; he almost purred, the upper hand was very fun indeed. Just as he was contemplating having the upper hand and what his next move would be he froze, Kain’s hands had wandered to his hips and had suddenly pulled down forcing their erections together. The choked gasp that escaped him gave the younger vampire the sighn he needed to roll them; Sebastian growled at his loss of control but the growl was short lived as the alabaster fledgling’s lips came back down. Sebastian smiled into the kiss before moving to draw Kain’s lower lip into his mouth and starting to suck on it, pressing down with his fangs not quiet hard enough to break the skin but close, the groan he got in return made him smile. He purred loudly when he felt clawed hands begin to wander and teasingly touch, delicately unbuttoning his shirt, opening it revealing an unscarred pale chest with slightly darker nipples one of which disappeared under black lips. Sebastian groaned louder and arched again, pressing himself into that mouth, he almost screamed when he felt fangs sink down just enough to draw blood then fierce suction.

Kain’s hands were not idle and were currently drawing Sebastian’s pants from his legs; sitting back he pulled the leather from him completely and took a moment to look his fill. Sebastian rose up, leaning on his arms to watch Kain as he watched him; eyes that had only just turned gold dilated suddenly and Kain wasted no time. The pale arms that had steadied Sebastian gave way and he fell back against the mattress with a deep moan, sinking fangs into his own lip to stop himself getting any louder. Kain’s clawed hand was going up and down the already solid shaft protruding from a light thatch of soft black curls, the other was being used to hold his weight as he leaned down and pressed their mouths together again swallowing any and every cry Sebastian made.

Sebastian pressed up hard against Kain’s mouth trying to convey the sheer desperate need in his body, forcing his tongue into the other vampire’s mouth he wasn’t overly surprised when fangs came down hard. His own blood filled his mouth and he felt Kain move faster, press down against him harder and groan, his own need becoming more obvious. Feeling the younger fledgling hard and ready against his thigh made Sebastian quiver, before bucking up hard as a thumb circled the tip of his member.

“B . . . beautiful,” he managed to get out before clamping his mouth shut to stop from screaming. Magnus was right next door. Bringing one hand up to the ashen coloured hair he fisted it in silk and pulled making Kain yelp in pain and fall against him. He was getting close, Kain could tell as he felt Sebastian’s abdomen tighten against him and the other vampire bit none-too-gently into his throat, and he felt burning heat against his hand and chest.

Sebastian drew back gasping, his mouth stained with Kain’s blood, he gasped at the air while absently remembering he didn’t need to breath. Opening his tightly closed eyes he felt his heart stop, if he thought Kain looked good before, he was completely thrown by how he looked scooping his seed off his chest a lapping it from his fingers. Just watching that was enough to make Sebastian feel the tightening of arousal again.

“Not quiet so tense now?” the pale haired vampire asked smiling rather smugly, licking his lips, Sebastian didn’t care that he was being laughed at and instead reached up wrapping arms around white shoulders and pulling Kain down onto him again.

“You cannot imagine how much or for how long I have wanted that,” he kissed his ear “thank you,”

“You over estimate my generosity,” Kain shifted pressing his erection into Sebastian’s stomach “I did that for the purely selfish reason of relaxing you,” he paused and Sebastian felt the smirk against his throat “for me,”

“Then by all means, be selfish,” he answered feeling Kain purr against him and slowly grind their hips together, “but first, you’re wearing to many clothes,” he rolled them suddenly almost falling from the bed, he laughed as they ended up wedged against the wall still pressed firmly together. He’d misjudged badly how much space he had to play with. He heard Kain sighed and his eyes went wide as Kain adjusted his position, thrusting his hips up to scoot his backside over a few inches before likewise letting his back move. It was a very odd; almost snake like movement, but it was only a matter of seconds before they were once more lying in the centre of the bed.

“That’s better,” Sebastian purred sitting back, slowly using his claws to slice through the ties holding Kain’s pants closed. Once cut it was easy to slide the pants from the paler vampire who lay back languidly “mine now,” at those words Kain’s eyes flashed defiance, and he snarled and rolled them again,

“I don’t think so,” Kain grinned arms gripping Sebastian’s wrists and knees on his hips legs pinning the other vampires. Kain’s grin became a smirk as he waited as Sebastian struggled, when the older vampire slowly began to realise he was not going to win this he relaxed and Kain leant back down “you. Are. Mine.”

Sebastian smiled upwards, he had fought for prides sake but he had surrendered quiet willingly also, content to belong. The aftershocks of his first orgasm had faded now and the pleasant tense tingle of arousal was back in full force. He watched as the pale skinned vampire now perched atop him, cut deeply into his own palm and let the blood run down over his fingers and drip onto Sebastian’s stomach, then smirking like the cat who’d caught the canary Kain spread very pliant legs apart and slid his bloody hand down in-between them, rubbing down towards Sebastian’s entrance. Sebastian frowned

“What . . . what are you do . . . Ugh,”

“I’m not going to hurt you.” Kain said simply almost soothingly “relax,” his fingers spreading blood on and around Sebastian’s puckered entrance until his orders were obeyed and he felt Sebastian forcefully relax beneath him.

Kain pressed the circling fingers harder until his index finally penetrated; instantly he felt the muscles begin to tense again but by the quick relax they did he knew Sebastian had been taken like this before; briefly a puzzling thought touched on the edge of his mind.

“you’ve never had this before have you?” he asked leaning down to talk directly into Sebastian’s ear as he pressed the single digit in farther, letting Sebastian get used to the feel of that one, as he worked the inside of the man, searching. “no ones ever prepare . . .” he was cut off when he found what he was looking for and Sebastian he gave a high pitch mewl, pushing back against the finger.

Kain grinned as he pressed against that spot again and gained another, higher pitched cry. Before drawing back and touching on the area just below, Sebastian writhed trying to press back, wanting that pleasure again and after a moment teasing he was granted it. Kain added second and third fingers to the one currently tormenting his lover, stretching carefully and making sure to lightly graze that spot as Sebastian all out howled. Eyes widening at the sound Kain lent forward quickly and crushed their mouths together least someone try to enter to see who was killing Sebastian.

The feel of Sebastian bucking beneath him and the muffled cries were making him ache and Kain drew back, Sebastian growled loudly making him laugh.

“Don’t stop!” Sebastian snapped, desperate again and angry

“Who said I’m stopping,” Kain answered making Sebastian mewl again as he pressed firmly against him, harder until he penetrated.

Long, arms wrapped around alabaster skin and short, sharp claws scratching at his back, one hand reaching down grabbing a handful of his ass and trying to force him inside quicker. Feeling this Kain smirked wider and arched forward suddenly making Sebastian cry out in pain and pleasure. Kain purred as he settled himself inside the tightness of his love’s body. Sebastian moaned contentedly and curled his legs around the other’s hips, dragging him closer and thrusting onto him. With a small groan, Kain pulled out slowly, before sharply thrusting back inside. A cry of pleasure and frustration made him pause as Sebastian’s grip on him tightened

“Please, move, please,” Sebastian knew he was begging but pride didn’t mean a thing anymore as with a grunt, Kain pressed back a little harder, angling to hit the special spot and being rewarded with a high mewl of pleasure. Kain began pulling out faster and thrusting in harder, becoming overwhelmed with the sensations over his body and the sounds he was caressing out of his lover’s throat. The ashen haired vampire growled, speeding up, snapping his hips in time with Sebastian’s. He was nearly all-out driving the man beneath him into the mattress, the springs protesting loudly. An especially sharp thrust made the vampire beneath him scream again and Kain snapped himself down wards crushing there mouths together again

Lips moulded together as pale arms reached up to rest on paler shoulders, fangs hitting hard against each other as they moved, tongues cut and bleeding, a trail of blood leaking slowly from the corner of where they joined. The blonde pinned his lovers tongue, sucking on it and enjoying the muffled gasps and moans that brought out, entwined with the heated mewls already pouring out. Clawed fingers wrapped difficultly around Sebastian’s long- revived, hard standing member. It only took two small pulls for Sebastian to become lost in orgasm. The tightening of the muscles around him made Kain’s body lurch forwards in a stumble and with one more hard thrust; he came into the willing body beneath him, losing himself in his own orgasm.

Sebastian came to slowly like floating to the surface of a pool of warm blood. Kain had collapsed on top of him and lay there perfectly, still breathing slowly watching him. It was then that Sebastian knew he would remember everything in this night. He would remember everything, absolutely everything, running his fingers through white hair he tried to think what else could possibly feel like this, what else could feel this much like water and yet not burn him; soft and warm. Dry rain, his hair felt like dry rain. He would remember the noises he had made when he touched him and the way he was watching him now. Sebastian felt his breath catch in his throat and heat pooled behind his eyes.

Kain yawned and rolled off him separating them completely, leaning down he pulled a blanket from the floor where it had fallen and covered them both, curling into the back of his lover he closed his eyes and slept.

And so time passed.

Days turned into weeks and the weeks to months and years; Magnus grew jealous of his brother and spent much of his time trying to gain what his brother had. Marcus finally cracked under the pressure he put himself under and ended up nearly dead at Kain’s claws because of it, but by mercy he fled the mansion in one piece. The army grew and swelled until it almost equalled the mortal army.

Sebastian grew closer to his Lord until he openly admitted love, Kain never said it back and wouldn’t until Sebastian was long dead and it was too late.

* * *

{Two years later}

They would declare war today.

Today was the day when the training would be put to the test, today was the day when the vampires would begin their conquest of Nosgoth. From north to south, leaving Meridian the Serefan city till the very end when the army would be strongest. Sebastian felt his blood run cold, he had faith in the vampires but war was impossible to commit without experiencing losses, he would lose at least one person he cared about that was a fate impossible to escape. He just preyed it was not the one next to him. The evenings first darkness was seeping in under the curtains and Sebastian half preyed that the evening not truly come that this moment be eternal so that he could just live for all time in this moment now.

He’d been awake all day, he hadn’t slept, he’d watched instead how Kain could still fall asleep even with him still inside, the younger fledgling had made a soft sound in his sleep as Sebastian pulled slowly out and rolled to the side and Sebastian had smiled slightly at the noise. Kain truly was an enigma, more so than Sebastian had ever thought anyone could be, there were times when Kain seemed older than Vorador and younger and more clueless than the youngest fledgling. Then there was the magic, the seemingly limitless power Kain had inside of him, the raw power that Sebastian had learned Kain had such a fragile control over. He’d watched several times as Kain and Vorador had argued statues had fallen, paintings had burnt; one particular argument had made them remodel the south wing library, they’d shouter, things had started to break they’d stopped shouting and things had continued to break. Kain hadn’t been able to stop it from happening; Vorador had had to knock him out to stop the whole mansion being consumed. That was the first time Sebastian had ever heard Kain apologise.

He wished it was still that day, that day when he’d been terrified that the only creature in this whole world that he loved would destroy them all through uncontrolled magic. Any day but this day, this day when they would declare war.

Then a hand touched his bottom lip without warning.

His eyes flashed to the side, meeting with now fully golden eyes. Kain yawned and mumbled something about sleep before nudging at Sebastian.

“I didn’t catch a word of that,” Sebastian smiled and rolled to his side to watch the ashen haired and sleep bedraggled vampire next to him

“I said,” Kain spoke clearly “you haven’t slept at all have you?” and frowned “how are you supposed to be . . .,” he was interrupted as Sebastian lifted up his head to kiss him. He sighed letting the tongue caress his own for a brief moment before he pulled away. "Don’t try to distract me!"

“I’m not,” Sebastian smiled “today we go to war, today many a death warrant will be sighed, we’ll lose so many.”

A porcelain hand caressed down the length of Sebastian’s body. The older vampire sucked in his breath at the attention to his hardening flesh.

"We are fighting to end persecution. We are fighting to end the death of our people of your brothers. Many are happy to give there lives for such a cause."

Sebastian’s eyes closed at the damning words and the caresses that intensified, quick and hard. He thrust his hips into the grip enjoying the pleasure of the caress mixed with the pain of the future. He reached over and gripped Kain’s hair and pulling him across for a hard kiss. His groaned deeply when Kain bit his tongue the tang of blood making him burn, he yelled coming forcefully beneath the sheets.

Spent he faced his lover, Kain had won the argument, through debauchery surely but he had won. Sebastian had to admit that those who fought in the future battles did so willingly; as a lieutenant he was charged with keeping as many of them alive as possible, if he did his job right fewer would die. He looked at Kain suddenly and for one piercing moment he saw the future he saw that he would lose, he would lose that most precious to him and it would kill him. A soft mouth caressed his cheek, and Sebastian closed his eyes

"I love you more than life itself." He breathed

“I know,” Kain answered standing and moving to get clothing.

Yes today they would declare war.
