Atonement
{Mortnius}
I had made
a mistake.
We had
made a mistake, Moebius, Azimuth and
I feel
this anger at myself often, how could I be so dim-witted, how could I have done
this. I have brought us so close to destruction. How did I do
this to us, how could I kill them all. But then I can still see the face
of my mother as she wept, and can still here my fathers enraged cries as I was
lifted from his arms and flown out of my life as a human and taken into my life
as a guardian and I know why I did what I did. I may not have been right but I
know why I did it.
I had not
asked for this but then people like me never ask for what fate gives us. I
highly doubt Kain had asked for what I had done to him, I doubt Janos had asked
for his heart to be torn from him. But it had been necessary; it had to have
been necessary.
Soon it
would all be right again, I would atone for my transgressions. The world would be
reborn and it would be reborn whole and pure, safe and loved. It saddened me
that I would not live to see the grass be as green as it had in my youth or the
sky as blue but we all paid a price, this was mine and I would pay it gladly.
I knew
Moebius would attempt to stop my plan; he would try to destroy Kain, the first
vampire guardian since the days of the ancients. He had done so well to destroy
much of the ancient vampires from the land as he could. He had done so well to
wipe the modern day vampires from Nosgoth, only those of Vorador’s brood
survived now and they hid themselves away in the swamps. Vorador had managed to
avoid us for so long, and he had kept others safe. I half hoped Kain would find
him in his travels to undo my mistake. It would be a gift for him to not truly
be alone, to not be the sole surviving vampire from our great war, our
genocide.
So many
dead, so many lost and we were so close to destruction. But it would be fixed.
I know it will be I knew it the moment I held the still warm, still beating
heart of Janos Audron in my hands over the lifeless body of the dead mortal
Kain. I had known it then and I knew it now. Moebius will try to stop it but he
will die at the claws of the newly born scion. They will all fight him, all of
them, all of the guardians but they will all die at his claws and their blood
will wash us clean. Still it saddened me that so many still had to die for this
to come to pass.
It was
worth it, it had to be worth it.
For Kain
would restore the pillars, he would restore the balance.
End ficlet.

write.
