Chapter One
{Vorador}
Hunts
seemed to keep losing there thrill.
He could
remember a time so long ago when he had been human and he had hunted wild
creatures with primitive weaponry. The fear that the intended prey would end up
doing more harm to him than he to it was always there making the hunt that bit
more exhilarating. Then there was the hunting in groups of five or maybe six
other strong huntsmen all together working as one to take down something huge.
He grinned
at the memory a faint thrill running through him, and there was always the
chance that he too may be being hunted, by something more powerful then himself,
he shivered at the memory of when one creature had caught him, torn him open,
fed from him only to return him to life with guilt and tears. Then as a
fledgling vampire the threat of harm was greater than ever for his prey carried
weapons, worked as a team and knew and understood his weaknesses.
But now as
an ancient, with the humans giving up all hope of survival the hunts became
dull, humans had lost their fighting spirit, finding one with spirit now was
like finding a great treasure in a coal pit. But just because the humans had
lost spirit didn’t mean it was impossible to make hunts interesting.
Four
humans had been released inside the mansion and were currently trying to work
out how to escape through the maze of corridors. One had been released in the
cellar, One in the gardens, one in the attic and one in the fountain room.
Vorador chuckled lightly at the situation, he’d actually gotten the idea from
Kain, he’d watched the fledgling hunt a few times, he would catch a human hurt
it a little the let it go again only to run it down again, this was repeated
again and again until the human fainted from fear or exhaustion or Kain lost
interest.
It
reminded Vorador of cats.
He grinned
and entered the fountain room. It seemed the human in here had actually had a
bit of a brain. The floor around the pool was covered in water, and the pool
itself was stained red with blood. Apparently someone had beaten him here. It
was quiet clear what had occurred in his absence, the human had coward in the
pool knowing the vampiric weakness to water and had tried in vain to fend off
any vampire that came close by hurling water at them.
Unfortunately
the human had obviously been unaware that Vorador’s partner in this little game
was telekinetic. A ruined corpse sat a little way off. Kain had gotten his
meal.
* * *
He knew he
was here somewhere.
Vorador
sniffed the air and smiled, he could smell him. But his smile faded the moment after
it had appeared, he’d been able to smell him for the past half an hour, the two
of them did after all share the same house. He hissed under his breath no
matter where he went he would be able to smell him so his nose was next to
useless.
He could
however smell human.
He crept
through the attic, considering shifting to his raven form due to all the
squeaking the floor boards were doing, he didn’t even have to step on them for
them to creak apparently just looking at them was enough.
He spotted
a rope a little way off and frowned, making his way towards it, it was a small
nose lain on the floor . . . like a hunters trap, trigger the nose and it would
tighten around the preys ankle and hoist them a good few feet into the air,
effectively preventing escape. Why in hells name was this here?
He paused
suddenly, he could feel eyes on him, turning slowly he spotted terrified human
eyes watching him from the shadows, he quickly looked away, not letting the
mortal know he had been spotted, glancing off to the side slightly he tensed
himself ready to leap at the mortal. Just as he was about to leap something
solid barrelled into him effectively throwing him off balance, he felt
something tighten around his ankle and was suddenly hoisted upwards, the world
span momentarily and he heard a terrified scream.
Then he
was looking into the upside down face of Kain.
“The trap
wasn’t for the mortal was it” he asked feeling very, very foolish
“Nope”
Kain grinned
“Where’s
the human” Vorador asked trying to reach up for the rope
“It fell
out the window and is currently spread all over the front courtyard” Kain
sniggered lightly and Vorador reached up again, slicing claws through the rope
that held him a few feet above the floor boards. He fell to the floor with a
loud thud and clambered to his feet, when his head had stopped spinning Kain
was gone.
* * *
He really
should have known better than to fall into the trap, even if he had actually
been pushed. Last time they had organised a hunt like this Kain had put little
traps around the mansion, Vorador had assumed that they were for the mortals. He
was however proven wrong when he opened the door to one of the library’s and
found Janos tangled in a very complicated looking rope trap, it had taken half
an hour to free him and in that time Kain had effectively eaten the prey.
The traps
were not for humans they were to keep the competition busy.
Janos had
decided to skip this little game, he said he found it cruel and pointless,
Vorador smiled and shook his head, he knew that that reason might have been
part of it but in no way was it the whole truth, he knew how embarrassed the
ancient had been at falling into such a humane trap.
He had so
far been dodging the little traps, he’d spotted the ones in the hallways and
the one in the cellar when looking for the human. It seemed the humans they had
brought back this time were a little wiser than those who had come before them,
one had used water, the other had actually committed suicide rather than be
eaten, and this one had effectively found its way out of the basement. Not bad
for humans, not bad at all.
* * *
The human
was running, blind panic making it careless, it raced full out down the richly
decorated hallway without looking back. Vorador hissed and leapt into a run
after the human; he smiled to see Kain drop down from one of the over head beams
that held the ceiling up. But the pail skinned vampire had been distracted by
the sudden advancement of Vorador and had made his jump to soon, the human
collided with him, and for the mortal it must have been like colliding with a
stone wall. Kain hissed and turned ready to leap at the fallen human but his
hiss turned to a yelp when Vorador leapt at him, throwing them both down on to
the carpet where they fought momentarily, Vorador’s age and extra weight making
him the victor, he pinned the younger fledgling.
“Took you
long enough” Kain smirked up at him; Vorador just growled and slowly moved off
the pinned fledgling who sat up “mind you, you did have to search this entire
country-pretending-to-be-a-house so really I’m not surprised”
Vorador
didn’t answer instead he grabbed his prize and sunk fangs down hard listening
to the delicious crunch of the more delicate bones in the mortals throat snap.
“Why do I
put up with this” Kain muttered rubbing his arm where Vorador had gripped him
then shook his head, ceiling dust fell around him like a cloud making him
sneeze
“I thought
it was me who was putting up with you” Vorador mumbled after a moment, dropping
the youth back, the limp body swung dropped and struck the floor with a juicy
thunk.
“Fine
then, why do you put up with me” Kain muttered
“Clearly
I’m defective” Vorador smirked getting to his feet “let’s go get the other one”
Kain
smiled and headed off with the elder vampire to find the remaining mortal.
“You know
I think Janos would have enjoyed it this time”
“Nope”
Vorador grinned “hates being upside down”
The End
Authoress Note: Short, pointless, and not even that
amusing but it was just another of the ones I just wanted to write.
