I’m just a little disappointed.

Chapter Three: Games and Ghouls
Two lion cubs raced across the
savannah, one perfect gold the other chocolate brown.
Siblings.
Gold leaps suddenly landing on
chocolate brown sending them both tumbling. They roll together growling
playfully at each other, training themselves for skills they will need in later
life. They keep playing, coming apart at times before leaping at each other
again, teeth grip tails, blunt claws scrape fur, growls and yelps fill the air.
In the distance a predator watches.
{Sanctuary
of the clans}
Kain slumps
on his throne a book open in his lap; he however has stopped reading it a while
ago and now lightly dozes, enjoying the quiet of the evening, which is soon
shattered
“GET BACK
HERE NOW!!”
Kain jerks
awake hearing the pounding of paws and hooves, he jumps as the doors to the
sanctuary slam open and a black leopard sporting purple spots races inside in
its jaws flaps its prize.
Raziel’s
cowl.
The enraged
wraith chases her inside, they race around the chamber, circling the throne
several times, and Kain lifts his legs from the ground to avoid being trodden
on. Unfortunately at that particular moment the leopard leaps on him anyway
using the master vampire as a spring board. She leaps again colliding with the
pillar of dimension and clambers up it leaving deep claw marks in the marble.
Raziel stops
running and glares up from the foot of the pillars not being able to clamber up
the pillar at all.
“Give it
back” he mutters
The
leopard laughs aloud, opening its jaws allowing the cowl to flutter back down, Raziel snatches it from the air and wraps it back
around himself before shaking his head and walking with purpose out of the
sanctuary.
Kain sighs
and goes back to his book.
After a
few moments the gentle sound of claws scratching deeper into the marble is
herd, a few quiet mewls and eventually humming.
“You
coming down at all” Kain asks not looking up from his book
“Um . . .
yeah, later the views nice up here” the leopard calls back down
“Nice view
. . . of the wall?” Kain is now confused; he puts the book down, stands and
walks to the dimension pillar looking up, it then dons on him what’s wrong
“your stuck aren’t you”
“NO!” is
cried back down,
“You are”
Kain laughs
“I’ll come
down there in a minuet and bite you” the feline shrieks desperately
“Try it”
Kain’s still snickering
“Why you”
the feline yells
It is at
that moment that her claws lose their purchase on the marble and she falls.
Kain jolts back falling as he is struck with the weight of a full grown leopard
falling from a great height.
“Sorry” is
mumbled after a few moments of silence.
//**//**// Half an hour later
//**//**//**
“Bored”
the small feline rolls over “bored, bored, bored”
“yes” Kain agrees “bored”
“I know
what we could do” Light smirks
//**//**// Ten minuets later
//**//**//**
“I hate
beans” Kain hisses glaring at the bean puzzle
Light
purrs proudly and nudges a puzzle piece with her nose towards him
“This bit
goes there” she purrs
“Where?”
Kain snorts
“There”
Light points with a claw
“Where?”
“Look
right there” she sighs loudly “oh for crying out loud”
The
authoress shifts form once more, however the new form to emerge is not that of
a feline, but one of a human girl.
The girl
is almost completely human, save from the black cat ears sticking out from her
black hair, the long furred tail which is now lashing furiously on the marble
and clawed hands which are more like paws than hands.
Light
glares at Kain before snatching the piece away and slotting it perfectly into
place.
“There”
she snorts
Raziel
enters the main chamber of the sanctuary grumbling quietly to himself about one
of his brothers, he pauses looking at the two unsure what to be more surprised
about, the fact Kain is now sitting with a human-ish girl or the fact that the
two are doing a bean puzzle.
“I didn’t
know you could do that” Raziel snorts walking over to get a better look at the
small human-ish author, the feline shrugs before looking back to the puzzle.
//**//**// Half an hour later
//**//**//
The puzzle
lies completed on the floor of the sanctuary, Kain lounges half on half off the
throne, Light lies half asleep staring at the non existent ceiling while Raziel
tries to think
“We
haven’t spoken to Melchiah in a long, long time” he mumbles, Kain makes an
‘hhhhhmmmm’ noise
Ten
minuets later
The three
wander slowly towards the necropolis for lack of anything better to do. Raziel
sighs wistfully as they wander steadily through his old clan territory,
seriously considering getting the place fixed up, despite his lack of
fledglings.
The
necropolis looms out in the distance
//**//**//**/ Necropolis
/**//**//**//
“No, no,
no, no, no, no, no, no, no”
Kain turns
hearing the small mumbled words and notices Light
walking a few paces behind them, tail wrapped around her leg, ears flat against
her head, paws gripped in front of her chest, her head down.
“You ok”
Raziel calls to her
“Fine” she
looks up suddenly, grinning nervously
“its just you look a little pail” Kain mutters wandering back
to the author
“fine really” she grins again “DON’T TOUCH ME!!” She shrieks
leaping backwards as the vampire reaches a claw out to her.
She
collides roughly with an old tomb stone causing it to break.
“Ouch” she
whispers, rubbing her back
Kain
frowns but he is not looking at the author he’s looking at the ground next to
her, its moving, rising and falling slowly as if
breathing, a cloven hand reaches up from the ground and grabs the authors tail.
Light
yelps and stands before stamping on the claw sending it back under ground.
All the
graves are moving now, the ground breaking apart as body after body tries to
rise to the surface, the little author darting frantically between them trying
to force bodies back into the earth
“No! No!
No! No! No!” She chants
Kain and
Raziel watch on in wonder.
A ruffle
of feathers causes them to turn, Janos has landed behind them
“I felt
magic” he says looking past the vampire and the wraith to the author who is now
getting out of breath.
“they just
started getting up” Raziel shrugs, for the first time getting a full view of
what it looked like when he came in to the physical realm from spectral.
The author
has given up now and sits panting in the middle of the graves while the long
dead inhabitants crawl towards her. One reached her and lays a crumbling hand
on her shoulder.
“I thought
I felt necro-magic” Janos nods spotting the ghouls around the author
Vorador
approaches having run up obviously following his sire, he slowed and pulled a
disgusted face
“What on
Nosgoth” he hissed eyeing the authoress now surrounded by ghouls all of them
sitting around her waiting.
Kain
started towards her steadily picking his way over the ghouls who paid him no
mind what so ever, all of them just stared blankly at the author.
“Can you
put them back” Kain asks looking disdainfully at the zombies who have now
curled up around the authoress, each one laying a hand on her somewhere.
“They
usually go back on their own” Light whispered not looking at him
“Why
aren’t they doing anything” Raziel asks
“I’m
stopping them” Light takes a deep breath, control obviously tiring on her “when
I run out of energy they usually go back”
“Usually”
Vorador murmurs
“Sometimes
they stay up but they’ll go back eventually” she shrugs before frowning “I hate
it”
“Hate it?”
Kain asks
“Yes I
hate this” Light looks down and shakes her head frantically “hate it, hate it, hate it”
“Why”
Raziel asks confused, Light looks up confused
“You’re
not disgusted” she asks
“Well it’s
not overly attractive but” Kain shrugs “I’ve seen worse, plus this is quiet a
strength little one”
“They
hated it” Light looked away “and they were right, this is evil”
“Evil”
Janos raised his eyebrows “why would you say a stupid thing like that, the
world needs death just as much as life”
“When I
was little, my pride knew I was different” Light whispered “but they grudgingly
excepted it, my father was strong enough to protect me” she shivered “they knew
I had power but I didn’t understand anything about it except that I had made
the odd dead insect live again”
She sighed
and seemed to slump forward a little
“One
afternoon me and my younger brother were out on the planes, we wandered to far
from the pride and a half starved rouge lion exiled from another pride killed
him”
She
shuddered visibly and wrapped her arms around herself, her tail coiled around
her leg
“I didn’t
want him to die so I used my power, I couldn’t control any of it and it was
only small, hardly really worth calling it power at all” she swallowed “my
brother died that day but not all the way, we went back to the pride together,
but he was drooling and still torn up pretty bad, I hadn’t been able to heal
him from the attack”
“Dear god”
Vorador muttered
“I hid him
from the rest of the pride and brought him food for three days, but then his
fur fell out, his skin went grey and his eyes went flat . . . he started to rot
from the inside out” she paused “it didn’t take long for the smell to attract
the pride, I was cursed according to them, they exiled me and my father after
killing my brother properly”
Janos ran
a cloven claw down the feline’s spine before stroking her hair
“They
hunted us through the grass lands, my father was killed but I managed to
escape, I didn’t want to be in the grass lands, I wanted to go somewhere else,
I wanted a home” she smiled a little “I wandered the grass lands as an exile
for years before I woke up here”
“Why did
it take you so long to get here” Kain asked
“I think
my power was too small for any mass world shifting teleportation but it grows
over time” Light shrugged.
The ghouls
started to move slowly, crawling away from the author, sliding back into the
earth, back where they came from.
“told you” Light whispered then looked up at the master
vampire standing over her “sorry, I can’t stop it, they reach into me and use
my power to rise, I can’t stop them”
“I . . . I
think I might be able to help you there” Janos smiled “I can teach you to lock
yourself”
“You mean
you could teach me how to stop it” Light asked
“Well I .
. . I could try” Janos managed a smile
“THANK YOU
JANOS I LOVE YOU” Light practically threw herself at
the blue, winged ancient
“I’m not
promising anything I don’t know a lot about death magic” Janos said around the
arms that had coiled around his neck
“Surely a
death guardian would be better” Vorador spoke
“True but
first she’ll need to be able to recognise her own magic, I can teach her that
then we can see about finding Mortanius or another”
“Thank
you” Light purred again
