Chapter Two: Awareness and Surprises

A large male lion limps over the dry grass of the savannah; in its mouth hangs a young cub, held in gentle teeth by the scruff of its neck. The adult is badly hurt; blood leaks from many deep wounds along its back, its back legs are slowly becoming numb and will soon be completely useless. The male will die before the sun sets.

He looks around, ears swivelling in the air hunting for any sounds. He decides it is safe enough and drops the cub in the long grass, before lying down himself and turning to lap at what wounds he can reach. The cub oblivious to all danger rolls around in the long grass in a futile effort to catch its own tail.

The adult stops his effort to clean his wounds as he seems to realise he will never get up again. Laying his muzzle down, on his fore paws he closes his eyes.

{Sanctuary of the clans}

“I can’t get over the fact it’s hardly hurt at all” Raziel sits cross legged on the marble next to the unconscious form of the lion

“You sure we shouldn’t restrain it” Vorador asks his sire

“It wouldn’t make a difference” Janos replies “the chains that can hold an author have not yet been made”

“Then why do we have it here” Vorador snaps loudly, a low growl echoes from the felines throat as it rolls over remaining unconscious

“You still think it’s an author then” Raziel asks, Janos sighs

“Yes Raziel” he answers curtly

The lion rolls over once again apparently uncomfortable on the hard marble, as it rolls it seems to shimmer in the dull light before its fur ripples in an unnatural way.

“What the . . .” Raziel mutters

Kain reached forwards laying a cloven claw on the furred back of the lion; he pulls a disgusted face as he runs his claw down its back and the fur falls away in clumps.

“It’s shifting” Janos mutters

Golden eyes flash open and the huge cat stands, the vampire’s lean back as the lion shakes itself roughly like a wet dog trying to get dry. Black fur seems to break apart and fly from the cat revealing a smaller and more slender puma beneath it.

The puma stands perfectly still for a few moments before wavering on its feet and collapsing into an unconscious bundle once more.

{Three hours later}

Everyone has retired now, Janos lounges delicately on the throne at the base of the pillars, Raziel has perched himself on one of the claws once again and Vorador has sprawled across the marble floor beside the throne. Only Kain is still awake, he is sitting watching the creature in front of him.

“Are you really an author” Kain whispered a cloven claw running through the puma’s fur,

The fur rippled before seeming to melt away in a much gentler fashion this time, like water over smooth rocks, leaving underneath a small back long haired house cat. The cat yawned and blinked big golden eyes at him before jumping into his lap. Kain winced as tiny claws griped his trousers as the small feline got comfortable, then settled.

“Hey you can’t sleep here! I’ve got stuff to do, place’s to dominate, worlds to enslave, balance to restore . . .”

A small throaty purr echoed from the cat, interrupting the vampires rant, Kain rolled his eyes.

{Following evening}

The vampires awoke that evening to find the feline still curled in Kain’s lap and Kain still awake.

Raziel sniggered loudly at the image of Kain with a small black bundle of fur in his lap, the snigger woke the bundle of fur, which leapt elegantly onto the floor and proceeded to follow Janos into another room.

“I’m guessing you’re hungry again” Janos muttered as he left the room the black cat in tow.

“What you gonna feed it” Vorador asks confused

“I’m not” Janos smirks, the black house cat stops in its tracks and hisses, Janos shakes his head and smiles “its going to feed itself, but it will come back here” he dips his head down and lifts the small feline by the scruff of its neck, black fur falls to the ground as the full grown house cat shifts into a kitten form.

A tiny yowl escapes the feline.

yeah alright then” Janos smiles “come back here alright” and with that he opens the door and watches as the now tiny black creature races of into the wastelands of Nosgoth.

“Where is it” Kain asks as Janos reappears with no feline

“I let it go” Janos shrugs, Kain looks to Vorador who shrugs showing he’s just as confused by his Sires actions as the rest of them.

“Why did you do that” Raziel asks “surely now we’re back where we started”

“It is an experiment” Janos replies “I think . . . this is just speculation but I think it will come back”

“Why” Kain asks

“Authors don’t leave their muses” Janos’ smirk widened, he is confronted by confused looks and glares

“Muses” Vorador asks sitting down beside Kain

“Yes” Janos nods getting a bit fed up having to explain everything three or four times to everyone, since when was everyone so dim, “I think you” he pointed at Kain “are its muse”

“Hey wait a moment!” Kain snapped standing

“Why did you stay up” Janos asked

“Couldn’t sleep” Kain answered quickly

“Worried were you” Janos asked

“No” Kain was starting to look worried

“I had always wondered why the scion was so powerful” Janos nodded to himself “it makes perfect sense now; your power comes from your status as a muse”

A loud scratching at the doors alerted them to the return of the subject of the conversation. The feline wondered back inside having returned to its lion form, in its jaws was the leg of what had once been a man, attached to the leg was the rest of the man, his throat torn out.

The lion stopped dragging its prize across the floor and dropped it, instantly tearing in to its ‘meal’

“Told you” Janos smiled widely, Kain pulled a face and Raziel stepped towards the lion.

A wet black nose nudged a severed blood stained arms towards Raziel,

“Um no thanks I’m not hungry” Raziel muttered trying to keep the disgust from his voice

“Suit yourself then” the lion muttered, its voice female

The vampires stopped and blinked, the lion jolted up suddenly and looked around quickly, its fur rippled and it shifted slowly back into a shorthaired kitten

“Meow” it squeaked

it spoke! And it’s a girl!!” Raziel muttered the kitten shook its head fiercely before jerking hard realising it was responding, it then turned its back to the wraith and stated to lick its paws.

“I told you!” Janos bellowed again “it’s an author, and its not really a girl, they don’t really have a gender, they are what they want to be when they want to be” he shrugged a few midnight black feathers falling to the marble

The kitten stopped licking its paws and made another squeaky noise before leaping into Kain’s lap again, where it was instantly shoved out of.

“Get off” Kain growled, the tiny cat hissed and backed away, frightened.

“Why is it freaking out” Vorador asked

“Freaking out?” Janos asked

“Afraid, why is it afraid” Vorador sighed

“I’m not sure” Janos rubbed his chin in thought as Raziel went to approach the little feline,

“Calm down” he snapped “I’m not going to hurt you” the kitten still growled but stopped backing away

“You are an author right” he asked, the kitten shook its head

“Janos is really sure you’re an author” Raziel crouched down to be eye level to the small feline who out of spite shifted form into a black cheetah sporting dazzling purple spots, forcing the blue wraith to kneel

“You’re doing that on purpose” he muttered as a cold nose nuzzled his cowl.

“Author” Kain’s voice echoed from behind Raziel again the cheetah shook its head “yes you are” Kain pressed

“No!” the cheetah yelped then stopped, looking at the characters around her “your not going to hurt me” the cheetah asked slowly

“Why would we” Vorador shrugged

“Others did” the Cheetah sat back down

“So you are an author” Janos smirked triumphant

“If that’s what you want to call me then sure” the feline shrugged as best a cheetah could “it sounds right”

Suddenly the corpse across the room shook hard and almost flew to its feet, before staggering over to the Cheetah who yawned, the corpse then seemed to die again and collapsed. The feline leaned down and began tearing at his insides once more.

“What else do you do” Kain asked suddenly, curious despite himself

The long black whip like tail arched proudly upwards before snapping down hard with a loud crack, instantly the cheetah was gone reappearing behind the vampire jumping upwards placing front paws on his shoulders.

“What the hell” Kain turned his head to find himself nose to nose with the feline, Janos shook his head

“I think this is going to take a lot of discussion” he muttered

“Can we get take out” the Cheetah asked

“Take out?”

“Oh boy”
