Hunting

They had decided against hunting the streets of Meridian tonight.

Kain however liked the city, its towering roof tops made excellent dropping points, easy to simply fall onto your prey killing on impact or dropping prey from rooftops hence the name ‘dropping point’. Hunting in Meridian was easy if you were swift and silent. The homeless, the drunk and other dregs of the city were always easy prey for the lazy and the thugs, thieves and few remaining guards made fun prey for the board.

Kain’s two most common states of mind, lazy and board

Vorador also preferred cities although he disliked Meridian, Meridian dwellers he claimed tasted of hopelessness and fear. He much preferred the smaller cities further north as they seemed to be made up of brothels and taverns alone. Vorador always enjoyed luring his prey to him of their own will and so the taverns and brothels were always a favourite with him.

The two had argued each other half to death before they simply decided to toss a coin. Heads they ventured south to Meridian and Tails they ventured north to Vasserbund.

The coin landed on its edge.

The forests and wastelands of the western territory tonight played host for the two master vampires’ hunt. Hunting had long ago become a tedious act, most humans had lost their will to fight and now it took a very talented vampire to find one with some spirit.

They had gone to many extreme measures to make hunting more sporting, arms were tied behind backs, blindfolds were set in place, legs were tied together many ridiculous obstructions to make hunting that little bit more challenging, they even went out in groups to hunt one human so they would have to fight each other.

Kain and Vorador often hunted together, giving them an unfair advantage over others, as a single master vampires could easily out fight an entire hoard of fledglings while the other went for the prey. The two seemed to fit together perfectly able to predict each others movements and move to compliment each other, they made a deadly team.

Currently they worked their way through the forest, paws striking the damp ground fiercely, dodging trees and foliage while leaving clumps of fur in bushes, they were not moving in stealth but in rush. Trying eagerly to out run each other, occasionally snapping at each other ankles making a game of the hunt.

Vorador leapt upwards landing on a tree that had fallen from the last storm; he turned in time to spot Kain leaping at him muzzle open teeth bared. They collided and rolled down the embankment growling and snapping wildly at each other. Coming to a halt roughly against a boulder at the foot of the embankment, they pulled apart and continued onwards towards the edge of the forest and the villages.

Above them golden eyes watched, before the watcher shook his head and muttered something under his breath at the behaviour of the two. He then followed.

They came to a stop at the edge of the forest panting roughly, they shifted back from wolf form to that of their slightly more humane forms and smirked at each other, and then they slowly prowled the forest edge waiting for some unwitting human.

Many times they had talked about why humans venture out at night and so often stray from their villages making it so much easier for vampires to hunt them down, although Kain had to admit he did enjoy slipping into villages when all slept, slinking past the night watch and into homes, taking prey while they slept.

He sighed wistfully that had been how he had first taught Raziel how to hunt when the wraith had been a new born vampire, wide eyed to the world and completely trusting of his sire. Vorador raised an eyebrow at the sigh but the smirk he received in return swayed his fears that his companion was slipping into depression.

They stopped together suddenly as they both spotted the individual in the fields.

“Alright” Kain smirked “you grab the prey and I’ll take care of the competition”

Vorador nodded, eyes fixed straight ahead on the single mortal, ears flat against the back of his head, every muscle coiled ready to pounce. Kain’s eyes however were fixed on the sky.

“Not yet” he whispered “no . . . wait . . . alright now!!”

Vorador darted forwards, leaping from the trees at the edge of the forest. He went straight for the human, who looked up, spotted two vampires and ran.

Kain however ran to the side, eyes still glaring at the sky, he turned changing direction suddenly and leapt.

Vorador leapt forwards and fell to the ground screaming human in his talons.

Kain landed roughly in the grass, dirt flying upwards embedding itself in ivory hair. He lay gasping on the ground his face buried in feathers.

“You cheats” Janos yelled “two against one is unfair odds”

“You fly, we don’t complain” Vorador lifted his head from his victim to reply before going back down to finish his ‘meal’

Kain rolled off the ancient who he had rugby tackled from the sky as it had dived to capture prey and started trying to shake the dirt from his hair.

Janos snorted and took back off into the air, trying to get a head start on the younger vampires who seemed in no hurry to continue their game. The three of them would eat before the sun rose.

Yes it was good to work as a team.
