(Written assuming you've both read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and watched the Miramax film Bridget Jones's Diary.)
My freshman year of college I was introduced to the movie Bridget Jones's Diary, and immediately fell in love with it.  Renee Zellweger is amazing, and Colin Firth...ohh, Colin First is
spectacular.  A few weeks later I went out and bought a copy, and have probably watched it 30+ times.  It's just such a good story, and I never knew why.  Spring semester of 2004, in my British Novel class, I was asked to read 8 novels, including Pride and Prejudice.  At first I truly despised reading it, and vowed to get done with it as soon as humanly possible.  However, though still complaining to my roommate about its drabness, I think I secretly started getting into it, needing to know how it would happen that Elizabeth and Darcy got together.  Just after I finished reading I thought to myself one night that I might like to watch a movie.  So I popped in Bridget Jones's Diary.  And as the story progressed, I realized that I was becoming more and more convinved that the movie was based on Austen's book.

Mr. Darcy=Mark Darcy.  Now this is fairly obvious, however the only really obvious name connection.  What is sort of ironic is that apparantly Bridget Jones's Diary was originally a book.  The movie only portrays 1/2 of the book.  Which is why a 2nd Bridget Jones's Diary is coming out.  Now, in the second half of the book, Bridget, now a television reporter, is very excited because she
gets to interview her favourite actor:  Colin Firth!!  This is a direct reference to the fact that Colin Firth portrayed Mr. Darcy in a British production of Pride and Prejudice.  Now, when making the second film, they had to cut that part out, because...who would play Colin?  Hah.
Anyhow, Bridget obviously portrays Elizabeth.  However, they are very different characters.  In the beginning they are both insulted by Darcy, and work through the rest of the pieces trying to erase the immediate prejudice they felt.
