Apparently the Boy Scouts try to encourage bigotry and narrow-mindedness among their members. The Boy Scouts should seriously reconsider their definition of “immoral.” Something that causes no harm and in fact may lead to happiness surely can’t be considered immoral, just because a few conservatives oppose it, citing the Bible. The Bible is frequently self-contradictory anyway. In fact, the objection to homosexuality as being immoral causes more harm than homosexuality itself. Teens commit suicide because they’re gay when their parents have always taught them that it’s wrong. Bigotry is the thing that’s immoral, not homosexuality. The Boy Scouts should bar bigots from their group rather than gays.
The Boy Scouts use the Bible as their main proof that same-sex relationships are wrong. However, the Bible can be used to prove or disprove just about anything. It also lists a bunch of sins in the same book that it lists homosexuality as a sin. One of the things is it says a child who disrespects his parents must be killed. There’re several chapters regarding cleanliness. A woman who’s on her period is “unclean” during and for a certain amount of time after her period. Anything or anyone she touches during this time also becomes unclean for a while. Also, the Bible’s view of treating everyone with love and respect is contradictory to the Boy Scout’s treatment of gays.
Homosexuality can hardly be considered immoral. I’m really not sure what, in particular, the Boy Scouts are objecting to. How can loving another person be considered wrong, in any case? And if it’s the sexual act they object to, similar things happen in a straight relationship. Unless the Boy Scouts also see any sexual act but the missionary position as wrong, how can they object to sex between people who happen to be the same sex? It makes the people involved happy, the same way the people in a straight relationship can be happy, and harms no one.
The Boy Scouts create more problems than they solve by saying that homosexuality is wrong. For one thing, when children are constantly exposed to that sentiment by their parents and religious groups, they may commit suicide later when they become teens, if they discover they’re gay, because they see themselves as being “evil. If they don’t commit suicide, their peers may kill them, like in that one case. Bigotry has always caused more harm than it solves, and many people have died because of bigots. What’s worse, being gay or being narrow minded?
The Boy Scouts are wrong to discriminate against gays. Any group that promotes intolerance does nothing but cause problems. Harming other people is the thing that’s immoral, not being gay, or any other thing people typically discriminate against. Most of our social problems are caused by intolerance.
