Lieutenant Jack Hammond
Though he is not perhaps the best seaman, Hammond knows how to keep order on the ship. As the first lieutenant of the H.M.S. Restitution, this is his primary duty, and being Irish, he is the perfect man for the job. He is twenty-eight years old and the nephew of 'Black' Charlie Hammond, which helped him significantly in passing his lieutenancy exam. Obviously, it does not bode well when Captain Groves is injured in battle and Hammond is given temporary command of the ship, with only the help of dyslexic Lieutenant Gerard and the fresh Lieutenant Bush, who is on his first voyage with such a rank. But by God, he'll complete his mission and keep order, too- even if he has to put every man on the Black List to do it.
