~*~ Chapter 4 ~*~

REDDING, CA – K-Mart – Sunday

There was a quick silence. Kirstin looked at Ashley, then at Hailey. Then Ashley looked at Kirstin, then at Tom. Tom was just facing Ashley, until he decided to break the silence.

“You gotta be kidding me!” Tom exclaimed in a loud tone, putting both his hands on his face, rubbing it, and then moving his hands to the top of his head.

While that was going on, Kirstin shoved both her hands down her pocket and looked at the floor and Ashley just looked down and smiled slightly to the irony, while thinking ‘This can not be happening.’

“What? What’s wrong?” Hailey asked, totally clueless. As no one really paid attention to her, she asked again “What? What’s going on?”

It took a moment for Ashley to speak. He seemed to be the calmest one there, weird as it may sounds. Kirstin just wanted to run and Tom just wanted to punch Ashley.

“I can’t believe you’re with this guy.” Ashley shook his head and pointed to Tom.

“Hello? What’s going on? You know her, Ashley?” Hailey was trying to get some attention.

“Yeah, I think I can say I know her.”

     “Really? You know Ashley, Kirstin?”

“Yes.” she still was looking down.

“How? How did you guys meet?”

     “High school.” Kirstin answered.

“No. That’s impossible. Ashley wasn’t in our school.”

“Not that school, Hailey. Remember I got transferred to another one when I was a junior?”

“Oh, yeah. After that incident with… what was his name?”

“It doesn’t matter. Yes. That’s when I got transferred and that’s how I met Ashley.”

     “Oh, ok!”

“And were you two girls friends?” Ashley asked, looking at Kirstin, but she was still looking down. He still couldn’t believe the irony.

“We were on the same cheerleading squad.” Hailey answered “She was our captain.”

“You were a cheerleader?” Tom suddenly spoke up. Kirstin just nodded.

“Didn’t you know that, man? Jeez. What kind of boyfriend are you?” Ashley looked up at Tom. It was clear the hatred on Tom’s face.

“Tom… let it go.” Kirstin tried to calm him down.

“You know that’s really… difficult for me. You know how I feel about this guy.”

“Yeah, Tom, but just… stay cool.”

“What’s going on? I understand how you know Ashley, Kirstin, but how does this guy know him?”

“Actually, it’s a funny story, baby.” Ashley was actually too calm about the whole situation “I dated Kirstin for a while.”

“You did? Back in high school?”

“No. Actually, just a few months ago.”

     “Really? How?”

“Well, she works at MTV now and we bumped into each other and one thing let to another and we got together.”

“Why didn’t you tell me that, Ash?”

“I just found out you know her, Hailey!”

     “Oh, yeah. Sorry!”

Kirstin looked up at Hailey and thought ‘Could she be any more dumb?’

“So… we stayed together for a while and then she decides she doesn’t wanna be my girlfriend anymore and trades me for Tom over here.”

“Oh, sorry to interrupt your story, but you got just one little thing wrong there. She was never your girlfriend, pal!” Tom had a sarcastic grin upon his face.

“Tom…” Kirstin put one of her hands on his chest to try to calm him down.

“No, Kirstin. He has this… annoying habit. He always thought you two were boyfriend and girlfriend. And you never were. He needs to face that already.”

“Then what were you?” Hailey questioned.

“We were together for just a while, Hailey. But I realized it was wrong, it wasn’t working. We don’t belong to each other.” Ashley looked at Kirstin. It was the first time he took the grin off of his face. That comment had actually hurt him. Both of them, Kirstin and Ashley, stared at each other and stood there for a while. Tom was pacing around, trying to calm down. And Hailey was just staring, clueless, at both of them staring at each other.

“Listen, Kirstin, I can’t stay here anymore. If I do, I’ll break this guy’s nose.” Tom said, looking at Kirstin. She was still looking at Ashley when she just nodded “Let’s go.” Tom grabbed her hand and was trailing off when Ashley said something.

“Oh, so you are the boss of her, now?” now he had a sarcastic grin upon his face.

“Ashley…” Kirstin sighed. She knew Tom wouldn’t let that go easily.

“Oh, pretty boy… Poor you… I’m so gonna enjoy seeing your face after you hear what I’m about to say…” Tom just shook his head slightly and put on a big smile when he continued “I may not be the boss of her, but I am her fiancée.”
