~that afternoon~
I sat on her bed, munching on a bag of chips and watching an old Jonny Bravo re-run when she practically crawled in, looking beyond miserable, and scooted next to me on the bed. "I take it you're having a bad day?" She ate a few chips and made a face.
"Horrible. Kyle and I had a fight, I have a 10 page paper due in history on the French Revolution which I know absolutely nothing about, and coach was purposely hard on us at practice." She sighed, laying her head on my shoulder and closing her eyes. I put my arm around her and began to play with her hair.
"I can help with the paper, sleep will fix practice, and what did you fight about?"
"You, he's being a jealous, conceited, idiot. He actually said you are trying to put the moves on me!" She made a face that made me smile a little, she looked so cute when she was upset.
"What did you say to that?"
"I told him we were just friends and that if he decided to stop being a pig, he could call me, but until then, he shouldn't bother."
"At least you asserted yourself."
"Yeah.. I guess..." She ate a few more chips, looking a little calmer. "Hey, Zac?"
"Yes?"
"Do you want to go to the store for me?"
"I would if I knew where the store was..."
"You wanna go to the store with me?"
"What for?"
"I need chocolate."
"And why do you need chocolate?"
"It's a girl thing.."
"I think I saw some Moose Tracks in the freezer this morning.." She jumped up and hurried out of the room, returning a minute later with the carton and a spoon. I laughed a little at the humor in her need for chocolate, as if that would solve all her problems (of all the absurdities). I watched her eat the ice cream, not saying a word. She looked so cute, like a child. "Can I have a bite?" She held a spoonful to my mouth and I swallowed it. It tasted sweet, as chocolate tends to taste. I watched her eat for a bit more, neither of us saying a word, until the phone rang.
"If it's him, I'm sleeping." she informed, implying that I was to answer the phone. I got up and grabbed it before one of her parents did.
"Hello? Pinckle residence." I answered politely (I don't normally answer the phone this way, but I wasn't answering my home phone.)
"Hi, is Gya there?" It was a male voice, I immediately guessed Kyle because it definitely wasn't Tay.
"I'm sorry, but she's sleeping at the moment. Can I take a message?"
"You're that Hanson fag, aren't you?" Yep, it was Kyle.
"I don't know who this Hanson fag' is, but my name is Zac."
"Same thing."
"I'm going to have to let you go now."
"Dude, stop being an ass and put her on the phone."
"Who's being an ass? Bye." I hung up and sat back down next to Gya. "He's quite rude, you know that?"
"You want some ice cream?" She offered me another spoonful, smiling in pity. I ate it.
"Why does he keep calling me gay? I'm not gay at all, I'm totally straight."
"I know you are. I told him not to."
"Well, he did. If you ask me, he needs to get drop-kicked into the gutter because you can do 600 times better than him."
"Like who?"
"I don't know any guys you know, but I do know you can do better."
"I could not. I barely got him."
"You need to take a good, long look in the mirror because you are the most gorgeous thing to hit God's green earth." and I wasn't lying either. I thought exactly that of her. If I had my choice, I'd be Kyle's replacement, but for the sake of our friendship, I wasn't going to bring it up.
"You live in a dream world."
"What's wrong with that?"
"It's unrealistic."
"I still don't see why you have to have a boyfriend at all. Dating isn't worth the trouble if you ask me."
"I didn't ask you." It made me a little upset that she was so harsh with those words. I was only trying to help her out. The phone rang again before I could respond and she jumped up to get it. "Hello? I told him to.." There was a long pause on her end, I supposed he was saying some sort of apology, too bad I couldn't overhear on the other line. "Am I supposed to believe that shit?" Another pause. "You miss me?" she smiled a sappy smile and I knew she was going to take him back. It made me want to vomit, the control he had over her emotions. "Really? Awe.. That's so sweet.." I'm ashamed I had to watch this sickening display. It was almost as if we were on some sappy Sunday-Night-Movie. She eventually suckered me into going on a double date with him and a girl I had yet to meet and was afraid to meet.
