Chapter 50
The next day, Dr. Thomas gently shook Nick awake in the
ICU waiting room.
"Sorry, Dr. Thomas."
"No, don't worry. You need to get some rest."
"I know, I just can't leave her."
"I understand," She looked up as Becca walked into the
room carrying two cups of coffee. "Hi, I'm Dr. Thomas' Ms.
Johnson's neurologist ."
"Hi," Dr. Thomas nodded and turned back to Nick.
"The test came back from Ms. Johnson's cat scan. Like I told
you before she seems to be having the necessary brain activity,
but each day that she doesn't fight it gradually declines. I'm
afraid to tell you that if she doesn't come out of this coma in the
next 48 hours we may not be able to help her." Nick's eyes filled
with tears. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but I thought you
might want to call her family in."
"Is that really necessary?" Becca asked her voice breaking
as her tears fell down her face.
"Yes, I'm afraid so. She isn't improving and she has slowly
begun to decline. I'm so sorry."
"Thank you Dr. Thomas." Nick said wiping his tears. She
stood and left the room.
"Have you called Aj?"
"No. I need to." Nick said tiredly. "I'll be back."
"Okay." Becca said as he stood and walked from the room.
Nick dialed the numbers into his cell phone. He placed it to
his ear and listened to it ring. He was a little shocked when Aj
picked up. "Hello."
"Aj, it's Nick."
"I know."
Nick sighed."Aj, Lizzy is in the hospital."
"What?" Aj's voice rose an octave.
"I walked in and found her on the floor. She had collapsed
and hit her head. They said she isn't fighting like she needs to.
It's like she's giving up. They told me to call her family and have
them come to the hospital." Nick's voice broke as fought back a
sob.
"I'll be there in 30 minutes." AJ hung up the phone and Nick
called Brian. By the time Brian answered the phone Nick couldn't
speak through his tears.
"I'm on my way Nick." Was all Brian said as he hung up the
phone. Nick sat down on the sidewalk and sobbed. He couldn't
believe that she was just giving up. She knew that even if Aj
didn't love her, he did? He stood when his head was hurting too
badly to cry any more and entered the hospital.
Becca stood from her seat and hugged Nick as he entered
the waiting room, her own eyes red from her tears. "I'm so sorry
Becca." He said through his tears.
"I am too. She doesn't deserve this," Becca said as she
pulled away from him.
"I know." Nick sat down heavily and wiped his eyes, trying
to stop the tears.
45 Minutes later Becca and Nick looked up as AJ walked into
the ICU waiting room with Alex. "I'll take him." Becca said as Aj
walked into the ICU waiting room. Aj handed Alex to Becca and
entered the metal doors that lead to Liz's cubicle. He stood at the
door staring at her for the longest time before he could enter the
room. He walked to the side of the bed and sat down gently
beside her.
"I'm so sorry." Aj said quietly as he held Lizzy's hand.
"Wake up for me please. You can't leave Alex. I realize how much
he needs you. Please wake up." Aj gasped as Liz squeezed his
hand. "Liz?" He asked waiting for her eyes to open.
