"You ready?" Nick asked me as I sat on the side of the
hospital bed.
"Yeah, anything is better than here. I'm ready to see Alex."
"I know, Denise said she would be waiting on us when we
got there."
"Good." I looked up as the nurse came in with the dismissal
papers.
"Okay Ms. Johnson, Dr. Freeman said for you to continue
trying to eat like you have been. She has prescribed you
phenergan. It will make you drowsy, but it will help with the
upset stomach. After a few days your body will get used to
working like it should and you should be getting back to normal.
If you have any questions just call Dr. Freeman's number. It is on
the paperwork."
"Thank you." I took the paperwork and the prescription and
sat down in the wheelchair.
"Let's get you home." Nick bent down and whispered in my
ear as he pushed me out of the room.
I sighed as I sat down in Nick's truck. It was so nice just to
be out of the hospital room. I was tired of smelling that stale air.
"Are you hungry?" Nick asked as he put the truck in gear.
"Not, really but I know you are. Stop somewhere and get
you something to eat."
"You sure?"
"Yes Nick. I don't think it would be a good idea for me to eat
and ride in the truck."
"Oh, okay. Well I will fix you something to eat when we get
home if you want something." He said as he pulled out into
traffic.
"Thank you. Thank you for everything." I smiled up at and
laid my hand on his. He looked over at me and smiled.
"That's what friends are here for."
"You are more than a friend and you know it."
"Yeah but I didn't want to push it." I nodded and we
continued our drive in silence.
I caught myself trying to fix myself in the mirror as we
neared Nick's house. I didn't want to look dishelved when Alex
saw me. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face as I saw Denise's
car in the drive way.
"Stay." Nick said as I opened the truck door.
"Nick I am fine." But I had spoken too soon, as soon as I
started to step down my world tilted. I heard Denise call Nick's
name but my world was black before I saw anyone.
I woke with a start, expecting to be in the hospital.
"Whoa, lay down." Nick said pushing me back down onto the
couch. "You are one stubborn chick."
"I'm sorry. Where is Alex."
"He's outside with Denise. She didn't want to leave until she
knew you were okay."
"What happened?"
"You passed out when you got out of the truck. She's going
to take Alex back, and I'm going to take you back to the
hospital."
"Nick, no. I am fine. I promise."
"Yeah, not that I don't care, but I don't believe you."
"Nick please. Don't make me go back there. I promise if
something else happens I will tell you and I will go back." Nick
sighed and hung his head.
"Dammit Liz."
"Nick I'm not going back."
"Fine, but this is the only time. Even the smallest thing and
you don't have a say in it."
"Fine, fine, just let me see Alex."
"Okay." He stood and walked out into the backyard to get
Denise.
I smiled from my seat on the couch as Denise brought Alex
in. "Hey there baby." I said as he climbed into my lap, "How is
my big boy?"
"Mama okay?" he asked as he looked up at me.
"Yes, Alex. Mama is just fine. I was sick, you remember that
time you got sick."
"Uhuh."
"Well it was just like that."
"Did you have an owie?" He looked up at me. His ‘owie' has
been an antibiotic shot.
"Yep, but mama is all better now." He nodded and snuggled
into me. I sighed, I felt at home more than I had ever felt in my
life.
