Warren’s Aquarium!

On March 24, 2003 I bought a 55 gallon tank which I had until it sprang a leek in late 2007. Here’s what it looked like on October 11, 2006:

Here are the occupants as of December 29, 2006:

11 zebra danios
Brachydanio rerio*
19 neons
Paracheirodon innesi
1 glass fish
Parambassis ranga
1 bala shark
Balantiocheilos melanopterus
1 cory
Corydoras aeneus
1 blue gourami§
Trichogaster trichopterus
1 dwarf gourami
Colisa lalia
2 common plecos
Hypostomus plecostomus
1 crayfish
species unknown
[Fish marked § were adopted from friends]

You may be hard pressed to detect a theme here — my fish come from India, South America, and Asia. But they all have one thing in common — I like them!!

I’ve also been trying unsuccessfully to grow an assortment of plants (to replace all my fake, plastic ones), which include Egeria, straight and corkscrew Valisneria, Ludwigia, Rotala indica, Bacopa, stargrass, a Java fern, Java moss and one Ambulia. Because I have less than one watt per gallon, they all eventually wither and die (except the Java fern, which is thriving). And I’ve also got a nice batch of black beard algae going right now. A Siamese algae eater is in my future, if I can find one.

In addition, fish that I’ve had but that did not survive include:

  Cause of Death Unknown:
3 dwarf gouramis (picked on by other fish)
1 zebra danio (jumped out!)
8 neon tetras (Neon Tetra Disease?)
2 fiddler crabs (1 escaped up the filter tube, 1 still at-large!)
3 otos
2 serpae tetras§
1 gold gourami
2 black neons§
3 hatchet fish

My First Fish Tank
(see how it all started!)

The tank as it looked on March 9, 2003. My first fish (danios) and my first plant (Egeria).

I like castles. The fish like castles. So, for now, it’s staying!
As of early June, the castle is out (no room)!

I know, this looks like something made by Fisher-Price. Well, it very nearly is. It’s a five gallon acrylic hexagon tank (with integrated hood and filter — an Eclipse Hex 5 system) that I purchased second-hand on March 1, 2003; two plastic plants, cheesy castle and gravel included!

Big-shot veterinarian though I am, I knew virtually nothing about fish. I found FishProfiles.com and quickly got an education. Luckily I havn’t made any huge mistakes. The four zebra danio were doing fine (they had fry twice!), the Egeria densa was growing like the weed it is, and the tank cycled uneventfully. I really wanted to add some cardinal tetras, but this tank’s awfully small to support any more fish.

So, I bought the big one!
