Is there anyone alive who doesn't love this little astro droid? Although he has no face and speaks only in beeps, he has an odd charm about him that just makes you want to go "awwww!" when he's onscreen. He never says a word (at least not in English), but he's full of personality. Even those who haven't seen the movies can appreciate his charm.
R2 is usually seen hanging out with C-3PO in probably the most famous duo in cinema. Although 3PO is the one who speaks English and looks like a humanoid, it is R2 who captures the audience's hearts. I suspect this is because without an understandable voice, R2's character must be developed through emotion. R2 carries absolutely no resemblance to a human, so the filmmakers were especially conscious about making him appealing. The arguements between him and 3PO are priceless. We can't understand R2's end, but we always know he has the upper hand and we can imagine what sort of smart-aleck remarks he is making.
Although R2 is considered a sidekick, he does more than his share of heroic deeds. Whether it's recording a message or fixing a hyperdrive, R2 can pass any test, and yet he rarely gets the recognition he deserves. But it seems that recognition isn't important to him. He does the right thing simply for its own sake, and knowing that he helped people (and that he upstaged 3PO) is enough for him. Although he's feisty, beneath it he's a purely decent person, er, droid.
