Student Handout

You're invited to have…
Fun with The Lorax!

What will we do?
In this unit we will explore pollution, habitat loss, and other ways that people hurt the environment. We will look at our community and find out what pollution is happening in our area and help put a stop to it. We will educate others in our community about environmental problems.

How will we do it?
We will read newspaper articles and the book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. We will even write a play based on that story and produce it! Everyone will have a job to do in putting on the play for our parents and other people in the area.

What will I have to do?
Keep an eye out in the newspapers and magazines for articles about the environment. Keep a journal on all of your thoughts and reactions on things we read and do. Contribute to the writing of the play by writing some sections yourself, and by responding to your classmates writing. Be an active participant in all of the activities. Have fun!!

How will I be evaluated?
You will be evaluated on how well you participate in class and do your homework. You will also be evaluated on how well you get along with your classmates and help others. At the end of the project you will be asked to write an evaluation of how you thought you did on this project and what you learned.

When will we produce the play?
Most of the work on putting the play together will be the week of March 3-7, with the performance being on March 7th.

What can my family do to help?
They can help you find articles. They can also help during the week of March 3-7 by coming in to school and assisting. Later a letter will be sent home with specific jobs that we will need help with for the play.
