CIS 625 Fall 2001
ASSIGNMENT 1
Vocabulary
for Web and Internet Technologies
Due Wednesday September 5, 16:00
EST
General Instructions:
I would much prefer for you to turn this assignment in as a web page. I
will give you some detailed instructions to allow you to save this file then
edit it to insert your responses.
- Copy or save this page to your local drive:
- If you are in an Unframed environment (i.e. you are not viewing this
through the framed blackboard site.)
- Go to your menu and click on "File" menu item
- Choose "Save as" then specify a file name or accept the default but be
sure it has an ".html" or ".htm" extension
- If you are viewing this in the framed Blackboard environment
- If you are using Netscape:
- Right click in the frame that this file displays in and choose "Open
Frame in New Window". Then follow the instructions above for a
non-framed environment.
- If you are using Internet Explorer (Things are a little more complex
here since I.E. doesn't quite give you access to the parts of a document
the way Netscape does. At least Netscape 4.7x, they changed some of
these features in Netscape 6.x and really screwed it up in my
opinion. Because of some of these features Netscape 4.7x
is my favorite browser for testing and debugging Web pages I make.)
- Go back to the Assignments page where you only see the link for this
document and not the document itself.
- Right click on the link to this document.
- Choose "Save Target As"
- Use the file dialog to save a copy of this file making sure that you
give it an ".html" or ".htm" extension.
- Open the page into any editor of your choice. (If you really know
nothing of HTML or dont even know really what or how to use an editor then
read the suggestions following):
-
- The only default text editor in MS Windows is Notepad (find it at
Start-Programs-Accessories-Notepad).
- I also point you to a couple of good HTML editors from the "External
Links" Page in our class Bb site.
- If after opening it up the HTML is just too confusing ATM (dont worry
you will soon be an HTML Pro.):
-
- If you have MS Frontpage then open the document in MS Frontpage
- As a last resort open it up on MS Word, and make sure that when you
save it you resave it as a web page.
(I have a
page(or will soon have if you dont see it up right now check back real
soon, its for next weeks lesson) which discusses the disgusting discourse
that MS Word spews out as a web page and how to help it.)
- Change the "H1" title at top to read LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME,
CIS 625 ASSIGNMENT 1, DATE where of course you insert you last
name, first name and the date you complete it.
- Delete all this text from teh line below to the new title at the top of
the document. N.b. if you are editing in HTML delete from the
closing </P> tag for the line below up to, but not including the closing
</H1> tag above.
- Insert Paragraghs inside the list items below into which you should type
your responses for each item.
- Save the document as per the instructions given for homeworks, i.e.
lastname_firstname_Assignment1, add an ".html" extension and send the file to
me in the class Bb site drop box (The drop box is under "Student Tools".)
- n.b. Remember if you are working in MS Word or some other editor NOT
designed specifically for web pages, make sure the file extension is ".html"
------------------------- Delete all from this line to the title at top, including this line -------------------------
A. Terms and Definitions
These are all terms we will be using and discussing throughout the
semester. You should know and understand them. Some we have not
covered in lecture yet, but they will help orient you to what is forthcoming.
Define each term in the list below using these guidelines:
- Enter your definitions in your own words (do not cut/paste from any other
source) The idea here is of course for you to understand these terms not just
spew definitions someone else wrote back to me.
- Keep the list in the same alphabetical order as below.
- Leave a blank line between the term and its definitiion, and between the
definition and the next term. (Appearance counts!)
- Definition length should range from two sentences to a short paragraph, if
necessary.
Grading will be based on: correctness, completeness, conciseness/brevity, and
appearance.
You may use any source (text, Webopedia, other) for you definitions (See the
external links page for online reference materials). You may not copy from
another student.
