The Orion Nebula, listed as M42 in Messier catalogue, is one of the closest emission nebulae in the sky. This picture is a close up of the nebula with 1200mm focal length. The nebula is an immense agglomerate of gas, mainly hydrogen, which represents the material from which stars in the nebula are forming right now.
The core of the nebula is occupied by the Trapezium, 4 stars very well visible in any telescope. The Orion Nebula is absolutely wonderful also for visual astronomer with a small telescope.
