The Flame and the Horsehead Nebulas:
This beautiful part of the sky is located around Theta Orionis, namely Alnitak, the brilliant star by the nebulas in the picture.
The Horsehead Nebula was discovered by Barnard by means of the application Photography Techniques; the nebula is indeed a very difficult target for visual observer even in large scopes.
The Flame Nebula (south of Alnitak in the picture) is brightened by a star not visible in the picture because covered by the nebula itself. The Flame Nebula is not associated to Alnitak, as it was previously thought, but it is actually closer to us.
