WYRM
Introduction and Themes
WYRM is a compilation of poetry and prose, of Eric Riley and other writers, for the purpose of creating a pageant of life. From Man's early begginings with a cult ritual and invocation to the Gods to the spiralling descent of technological man.
WYRM version 1.0 was a performance consisting of three thematic acts, or "waves." These waves represent three different stages of human development.
Wave 1 {Early} is the most primal. It consists of an invocation to the gods, a late Latin poem by Catullus, and three representations of man in various primal states. One of which is survival ("Room"), another a Nietzschean statement of self, and the final a rant on contemporary commercialism.
Wave 2 {Now} is a series of vignettes depicting incidents in the writers life. The majority of these are TRUE {yes really} stories of what happened to him on the Cincinnati Metro Bus lines. Although containing a serious amount of violence, there is still a realization of a debt of gratitude, and the satisfaction of experience.
Wave 3 {Late} is an Apocalyptic vision of the future. There is a conflict between individual and society, and individual and machine. The speaker, covered in wires and chains is bound to an information society. His only hope for survival after reclaiming his independence is a return to a primary state.
I hope you enjoy the performance as much as I did in performing it!
