iFreaks: matinee movie club
Growing up I was always around cable television, and from a very young age I was exposed to independent and foreign films of all sorts. But I didn't see movies like this in the theater too often, because Cincinnati's theater scene was mostly popular national level cinemaplexes. There were only two major independent theaters, and during my time in the city one of them closed.
So, much to my surprise I discovered Seattle's independent theater chain: Landmark Theatres. And I dove right in. I volunteered as an usher and ballot counter at both the Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival. After a couple of months I was going to see all kinds of movies by myself, at least once or twice a week, and so I decided to get other students in on the act. I sent an open email to the chat list and solicited names of people who wanted to either a) go see a movie every weekend or b) recieve the email about what we're going to see every weekend. There were over twenty people on the list, and to manage things I developed a small website for the iFreaks.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition
Before moving to Seattle I was involved in a two year Werewolf campaign. Moving away from that story was really difficult, but early in my second year of graduate school I turned back to role playing games with some of my friends from the English department. We began playing Warhammer 40K, but being terribly unskilled in large scale military strategy and not knowing the futuristic weaponry my armies were decimated every time. After a while we turned to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, because the third edition manuals had finally been released. Recently we've: Fallen through a planar gate that led straight to the first layer of hell, Forged the river of blood, Entered another gate that led to a city on the inside of a Torus shaped planet, Went on a mission to Asgard to acquire three flaming yule logs, Destroyed a snooty elvish restaurant when we brought the yule logs back through the women's bathroom, and Spent days and days poring over books in the hall of records with the gnome librarians. Currently we are on the verge of death in a dwarven stronghold overrun by orcs and twisted dwarves, and all we want is a book that tells us about the plane we came from so we can go home.
