Well, burning people no matter who they are was killing and wrong. Period. But the original defination of slavery, or as it was used in the old testament, allowed someone with little or no means to sell themselves into servatude. They would be a herdsman or hand maiden in exchange for room and board. And were to be treated well.
The way the early american forefathers defined slavery wrong. It became more of a raping the land of people against their will. Sinfull.
And yes, mental illness does not necessarily mean demonic possession. The people who thought so did not live in the age where knowledge increased. And sadly, some mental illness can be because of demon influence, though I would not be a good judge of those cases.
