I can understand some of the confusion that this may bring,especially if we assume that all the Gosple accounts mirror each other. But although Luke 2:39 might seem to indicate that Joseph and Mary returned to Nazareth right after presenting Jesus at the temple, it must be remembered that this scripture is part of a highly condensed account.
The Gosple writers do not present exact copies of each others work. Luke from :39 onward gives brief details of Jesus life to age 12. The other account in Matthew Gives more detail by giving us the account of Herod wanting to Kill Jesus. Luke leaves this out all together. Neither contridict each other, but suppliment each others accounts.
